IRS switched my direct deposit to paper check - what happened?

Filed my taxes 3 weeks ago and picked direct deposit. Just checked Where's My Refund and it says they're mailing me a check instead? My bank info was correct and everything. Anyone else have this happen? Really need this money asap and now I have to wait even longer.

This actually happens more often than you'd think. The IRS sometimes switches to paper checks if there's any red flags with the bank info, if you've had too many refunds going to one account, or if your bank rejected the deposit. Check if you've had more than 3 refunds going to the same account this year - that's usually the trigger.

might be worth calling your bank then to see if they rejected it for some reason

just went through this myself! best way to actually understand whats happening is to use taxr.ai - its this new tool that reads your transcript and tells you exactly why things changed. costs $4.99 but saved me weeks of confusion. heres the link: https://taxr.ai

Double check your routing number. I put one digit wrong and they automatically switched it to paper check instead of rejecting the return

Had this exact same thing happen to me last year! Turns out it was because I had moved and updated my address with the IRS after filing but before they processed my refund. Even though my bank info was perfect, the address mismatch triggered their system to switch to paper check for "security reasons." If you've changed your address recently or there's any discrepancy between what's on file vs your return, that could be it. Super frustrating but at least the check should come within 6-8 weeks instead of the usual paper timeline.
