Accidentally upgraded to H&R Block Premium - can I just create a new account to avoid the fee?

I accidentally upgraded to H&R Block Premium for a minor tax credit that's barely helping me. Now I can't figure out how to downgrade or remove the premium version from my account. Super frustrating! After comparing with TurboTax, I was ready to pay their $70 fee for an income line item I needed, but then they hit me with another $45 state filing fee just because I'm now considered a "paid customer." That's ridiculous! I'm wondering if anyone has experience with just creating a brand new H&R Block account and starting over? I have my previous year's tax return printed out, so I don't think I need access to any of my prior uploads. Redoing everything would only take me about 30 minutes since I have all my tax documents organized and ready to go. Would there be any problems with just using a different email address to create a fresh account and starting from scratch? Any gotchas I should know about?

You can absolutely create a new account with H&R Block using a different email address. There's no rule against having multiple accounts, and the software doesn't track you by anything other than the login credentials. Just make sure you have all your documents ready to re-enter and don't file through both accounts. The IRS will flag duplicate filings immediately. Also, if you already paid for Premium on your current account, you likely won't get that money back, so consider if the savings are worth redoing the work. One thing to watch for: if you received any tax documents through the H&R Block interface (like imported W-2s or 1099s), you'll need to manually enter those in the new account. And don't forget to download or print any documents from your current account that you might need for your records before abandoning it.

Do you know if creating a new account would somehow violate H&R Block's terms of service? I'm worried they might flag it somehow and cause issues with my filing.

Creating a new account doesn't violate their terms of service. Many households have multiple people using the same tax software with different accounts, and H&R Block has no way to know it's the same person unless you use identical information. As for flagging issues, the only concern would be if you submitted two tax returns. As long as you only file once, there's no mechanism for them to catch or care about you using a second account to avoid upgrade fees.

I was in a similar situation last year with H&R Block charging me for features I didn't need. After hours of frustration trying to downgrade, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which analyzed my tax documents and gave me personalized guidance on which forms I actually needed. Saved me from paying for premium features I didn't need, and their document analysis showed me exactly what forms applied to my situation. Their automated review found a deduction I missed too! If you're stuck deciding what version you really need, it might help before you start over.

How exactly does taxr.ai work? Does it just tell you what forms you need or does it actually help file your taxes too? I'm curious because I'm in a similar boat with being charged for premium features I don't think I need.

Sounds interesting but I'm skeptical. How is this different from just using the free version of tax software? They usually tell you if you need to upgrade for specific forms anyway.

It analyzes your tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) and tells you exactly what forms and schedules you need before you start using any tax software. This way you know upfront which version of tax software would work for your situation instead of finding out halfway through that you need to upgrade. The difference from free tax software is that those programs often don't tell you what forms you need until after you've entered all your information, and then they upsell you. Taxr.ai works independently from any tax filing service, so there's no incentive to upsell you on features you don't need.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai that I mentioned earlier. I was super skeptical but decided to give it a try since I was frustrated with being forced into premium versions. It actually worked really well! I uploaded my documents and it analyzed exactly what forms I needed - turned out I only needed very basic forms and could use the completely free version of FreeTaxUSA instead of paying for H&R Block premium. Saved me about $85 total and the interface was way simpler than I expected. Definitely checking this first next year before I start entering data into any tax software.

After dealing with similar upgrade issues, I found that trying to contact H&R Block customer service was impossible - waited on hold for over 2 hours! I ended up using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to them and actually got a representative in about 10 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. They were able to downgrade my account, though they couldn't refund the difference. Still, saved me from having to redo everything from scratch. Might be worth trying before creating a new account.

Wait, what exactly is Claimyr? Is it just a service that helps you get through phone trees faster? How does that even work?

This sounds like complete BS. How could some third-party service possibly get you through H&R Block's phone system faster? They'd have the same queue as everyone else. Sounds like you're just promoting something...

It's a service that basically calls the company for you and navigates the initial phone tree, then waits on hold in your place. When they get a real person, they connect the call to your phone so you don't have to waste time listening to hold music for hours. I was skeptical at first too. The way it works is they use technology that can stay on hold for you and have dedicated lines that continually redial if disconnected. I don't know all the technical details, but what matters is that I got through to H&R Block in minutes instead of hours. Not promoting anything, just sharing what worked when I was in the exact same situation as OP.

I need to apologize to Profile 3 about Claimyr. I was super skeptical and called it BS, but after sitting on hold with H&R Block for nearly 3 hours and getting disconnected twice, I was desperate enough to try anything. Used that Claimyr service and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. The H&R Block rep couldn't give me a refund but did switch me to a lower tier for next year. They also gave me a code for 50% off state filing which helped offset some costs. So yeah, it actually works and saved me a ton of time. Sorry for doubting you!

I work in customer support (not for H&R Block), and I can tell you that creating a new account is totally fine. Companies expect people to make multiple accounts for various reasons. The only potential issue is if you're in the middle of a filing that has saved data - that won't transfer to your new account.

Would the IRS care if I filed with a different email than last year? Does that information even get sent to them?

The IRS doesn't receive or care about what email address you used to file your taxes. They're only concerned with the actual tax information (SSN, income, deductions, etc.), not the account details from the tax preparation software. When you e-file, the only things transmitted to the IRS are your tax forms and the data they contain, along with some tracking information from the tax preparation company. Your login credentials, email address, and account information stay with the tax preparation company and aren't part of what gets sent to the IRS.

Have you tried calling H&R Block directly? Sometimes they can remove premium if you explain the situation. I accidentally upgraded to premium last year and they switched me back when I called.

Their customer service is the WORST. I tried calling about a similar issue and was on hold for 1.5 hours before I gave up. Their chat support just sends automated responses that don't address the issue.
