846 Code with DDD of 4/5 (Friday) Instead of Wednesday - Is This Normal?

I would like to inquire about what might potentially be a minor issue, but given the somewhat tumultuous tax season this year, I'm seeking verification. I recently received an 846 code with a Direct Deposit Date of 4/5, which falls on a Friday. I've observed that many others appear to be reporting 4/3 dates. In previous tax years, I've consistently received Wednesday deposit dates. Would it be reasonable to consider a Friday date as unusual? I recognize this may seem overly cautious, but this tax season has left me feeling somewhat apprehensive about variations from past experiences. Has anyone else received a 4/5 DDD this year?

Nope, not weird at all! IRS has been spreading DDDs across diff days of the week for the past few yrs. Used to be strictly Wed/Thurs but now they're doing Mon-Fri to balance the load. I've gotten DDDs on every day of the week over my last 5 returns. Ur good to go! The 846 code is what matters - that's the official "refund approved" stamp.

This is correct. The 846 code indicates a scheduled refund and the Treasury Financial Management Service distributes payments on multiple days throughout the week now. The transition from Wednesday-only deposits began during the high volume pandemic processing periods and has continued as standard procedure.

Do banks sometimes hold these deposits even when they come in? My transcript showed a Friday date last year but I didn't actually see the money until Monday. Could that happen again?

The IRS distribution system has evolved over the years. Here's what's happening: 1. First, your 846 code confirms your refund is approved - this is the most important part 2. Second, the date associated with the 846 is when the Treasury releases the payment 3. Third, the actual day of week varies based on processing batch assignments 4. Fourth, some financial institutions may receive Friday distributions but not post until Monday The Wednesday pattern was historically common but is no longer the standard. The current system distributes refunds throughout the week to manage volume more efficiently.

I had a somewhat similar situation last year, possibly due to high volume processing. I was possibly going to wait it out, but I couldn't possibly handle the anxiety of not knowing what was happening. I tried calling the IRS maybe 15-20 times with no luck getting through. I eventually used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and they got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. The agent confirmed that Friday DDDs are perfectly normal and that I should expect the deposit either on that day or potentially the following Monday depending on my bank. It was possibly the best $20 I've spent considering how much stress it saved me.

I just went through this last month! Had a Friday DDD (3/8) and was totally confused because all my previous refunds came on Wednesdays too. Called my bank in a panic thinking something was wrong. Turns out the IRS has completely changed how they schedule deposits over the last couple years. My deposit actually hit my account Thursday night (3/7) around 11pm - a day EARLY! The whole system is different now. I remember back in 2019 when you could set your watch by those Wednesday deposits, but now it's all over the place.

Did you file on January 29th by any chance? I'm tracking patterns and noticed many people who filed on the first day or within that first week ended up with Friday DDDs specifically on 3/8. Wondering if there's a correlation with filing date.

This matches exactly what happened with my refund. My 846 code showed exactly 4/5 as the DDD, but my credit union posted it at exactly 11:42pm on 4/4. I've tracked this for 6 years now, and my credit union consistently posts IRS deposits between 11:30pm-12:15am the night before the official DDD.

According to the IRS.gov processing guidelines (https://www.irs.gov/refunds), DDD dates can vary throughout the week. I'm concerned that many online forums still reference the old Wednesday-only schedule which hasn't been accurate since at least 2020. The IGOT (Internal Government Outlay Treasury) system now distributes payments throughout the week to avoid overwhelming financial systems. If your 846 code is showing 4/5, I'd recommend checking your bank account starting 4/4 evening through 4/8 morning as some financial institutions have different posting schedules for government deposits.

You're definitely fine! I've been tracking DDD patterns for years and here's what I've learned: • 846 code = guaranteed refund is coming • DDD day of week varies widely now • Some banks post 1 day early (especially credit unions) • Some banks hold until next business day if it's Friday • The old "Wednesday rule" ended around 2019-2020 The most important thing is you have an 846 code! That means your refund is approved and on the way.

OMG thank you for this breakdown!! I've been so stressed seeing my Friday date! 😩 This makes me feel sooo much better knowing it's normal! My credit union usually posts government deposits early so maybe I'll even see it Thursday night!! 🙏

I worked in tax preparation for 15 years and can confirm Friday DDDs are completely normal now. Back in 2018, I remember when this change started happening. The Treasury Department expanded their distribution schedule from just Wednesdays to multiple days throughout the week. I had a client last year with a Friday DDD of 3/31, and their refund hit their account exactly on that date. The IRS processing system has actually become more efficient with this change, as it prevents the banking system from being overwhelmed with millions of deposits on a single day.

Would you happen to know if there's any way to predict which day of the week you might receive your DDD? Is it related to when you file, which tax credits you claim, or is it completely random?

I received a Friday DDD 3/22 and got my refund exactly on 3/22 at 2:38am. Bank of America posts Treasury deposits as soon as they receive them, regardless of day. TD Bank and Chase typically hold until morning. Wells Fargo sometimes holds weekend deposits until Monday. Each bank follows their own policy for government deposits.
