DEO application rejected because I used my phone instead of computer - 2025 and still requiring laptops?

Just wasted THREE WEEKS thinking my DEO application was being processed!! Finally got a callback today (after requesting one 4 days ago), waited another 20 mins on hold, and the agent dropped this bomb: My entire application is INVALID because I filed it on my smartphone!!! Even though the CONNECT system LET me complete everything on my phone, sent me a confirmation email, allowed me to set up my login credentials, and I could see all my claim info when I logged in... the DEO agent said they have ZERO record of my application in their actual system. Apparently you MUST use a laptop or desktop computer to apply or the application won't properly register in their system. I have to start completely over now using a computer - which I don't even own! In 2025, when I can literally do my banking, taxes, and manage my entire life from my phone, Florida's unemployment system still requires a computer like it's 1998 or something. I'm beyond frustrated. Now I have to find someone who'll let me use their laptop so I can reapply, and I've already lost weeks of potential benefits. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for computer access since my local library is closed for renovations?

Unfortunately, this is completely accurate. The CONNECT system has major compatibility issues with mobile browsers. Even though it *appears* to work on phones, the form submissions don't properly integrate with their backend database. The DEO knows about this problem but hasn't prioritized fixing it because their system is built on outdated technology. Your options for computer access: 1. CareerSource Florida offices (they have free computer labs) 2. Ask a friend/family member 3. Some UPS stores or print shops have computer rentals 4. Community centers often have computer labs Make sure when you reapply that you complete it in one session if possible. The system times out frequently and doesn't always save partial applications properly. And double-check that you receive both the confirmation email AND a follow-up email within 48 hours that includes your claimant ID number. If you don't get that second email, it's a sign something went wrong again.

Thank you for confirming this! At least I know it wasn't just me doing something wrong. I'll try CareerSource tomorrow - didn't think about them having computers available. Really appreciate the tip about looking for that second email with the claimant ID too. I only got the initial confirmation last time, never anything with an ID number. So frustrating that they know about this issue but haven't fixed it!

Ugh, I'm sorry you went through this too. Thanks for the heads up about printing everything - I'll definitely do that. Did you end up getting backpay for the weeks you lost due to their system error?

Tip from someone who worked as a temp at DEO last year: When you reapply on a computer, use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge in Incognito/Private mode. Their system has weird compatibility issues with some browser extensions and cached data. And here's an important thing the agent might not have told you - you CAN request that they backdate your claim to when you originally applied. You'll need to specifically ask for this when you call after submitting your new application. Explain that you had a valid technical reason for the delay (their system accepting mobile applications that don't process correctly). Have the date of your original application and the confirmation email ready as proof. Also, if you're struggling to reach someone by phone to request the backdating, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you through to a DEO agent much faster. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. It saved me hours of frustration when I needed to get my claim backdated for a similar reason.

I tried asking for backdating and they denied me even though it was clearly their system error that caused my application issues. They said I should have known to use a computer. I appealed though and eventually won after providing the confirmation emails showing I had tried to apply earlier. So don't give up if they initially say no to backdating!

DEO is still living in the STONE AGE!!! Their entire system is DESIGNED to frustrate people into giving up. I guarantee this "mobile doesn't work" thing isn't an accident - it's a feature to reduce the number of successful applications. Your tax dollars at work, folks! 🤬

It really does feel that way sometimes... like they're purposely making it difficult. I'm not giving up though. Too many bills to pay to let their broken system stop me from getting benefits I've earned.

I went thru same. Had to use my cousin computer to finish mine. The librarby computers didn't work neither cause they block some websites. Crazy part was the DEO website say u can use mobile devices!!! Somebody need to sue them fr

You're right about their website claiming mobile compatibility. If you look at the CONNECT login page, it doesn't have any warning about mobile devices not working properly. This has been an issue for years, and they still haven't added a simple warning message that could save people weeks of waiting.

This whole phone vs. computer thing is just one of the many problems with Florida's unemployment system. When I applied back in January, I used a computer but still had issues because I have an autofill extension that apparently messed up some of the form fields without me realizing it. My advice: After you reapply on a computer, call DEO immediately (don't wait) and confirm they actually received your application. Get a confirmation number for the call too. Document EVERYTHING. Every call, email, and piece of correspondence. And yes - definitely request backdating to your original application date! You shouldn't be penalized for their technical issues. According to Florida Administrative Code 73B-11.013, they can backdate claims when there are technical difficulties with the system. Print that regulation and have it ready if they try to deny your backdating request.

Thanks for the specific regulation number! I'll definitely have that ready when I call them. And good point about the autofill - I'll make sure to disable any browser extensions when I reapply. Seems like their system is just looking for any excuse to reject applications...

Log into your CONNECT account and look for a claimant ID number and claim status. If you don't see those, call DEO immediately to verify your application status. Also check if you received any follow-up emails after the initial confirmation (something with your claimant ID or instructions for claiming weeks). If you only got the first confirmation email, there's a good chance your application didn't fully process.

Just want to follow up - were you able to get access to a computer and reapply? If you're still having trouble finding computer access, some McDonald's restaurants have free computer kiosks you can use as well. Not all locations have them, but it's worth checking ones in larger cities. Also, keep detailed notes of all the extra steps and delays this has caused you. If you end up needing to appeal anything related to your claim (like backdating or work search requirements for these weeks), having documentation of the system issues you encountered will be helpful.

Thanks for checking back! I went to CareerSource yesterday and used their computers to submit a new application. The staff there was actually super helpful and said they see this phone issue all the time. They even printed copies of everything for my records. Now I'm waiting for that second email with my claimant ID that someone mentioned I should receive within 48 hours. If I don't get it by tomorrow, I'll try that Claimyr service to get through to DEO faster. I've been taking screenshots and notes of everything like you suggested!
