Why did California EDD only pay me for one week of unemployment?
So I'm completely confused and honestly starting to stress out. I've been certifying every two weeks like I'm supposed to through UI Online, and everything looked fine on my end. But when I checked my Bank of America EDD debit card this morning, I only got paid for ONE week instead of the usual two weeks. My claim doesn't show any holds or issues in the portal, no pending eligibility investigation notices, nothing. Both weeks I certified show as 'payment issued' but only one deposit actually hit my account. I reported my work search activities correctly, I wasn't working during either week, and I answered all the certification questions the same way I always do. Has anyone had this happen before where California EDD only paid one week out of a two-week certification period? Is this a glitch in the system or did something actually get flagged on my claim?

This actually happens more than people realize with California EDD. A few things could cause this. First, check if one of your weeks was the waiting period week - California EDD has a one-week unpaid waiting period at the start of a new benefit year or a new claim. If you recently filed a new claim or your benefit year rolled over, that first week won't be paid. Second, sometimes the system processes one week and holds the second pending a quick eligibility review that resolves on its own. Log into UI Online and look carefully at each week's status separately - they should each show individual statuses.

AuthorI checked and both weeks literally say 'payment issued' but my card only shows one deposit. My claim isn't new either, I've been collecting for about 4 months so it's not a waiting period thing.

If both weeks show payment issued but only one hit your card that could actually be a Bank of America EDD debit card issue not a California EDD issue. Call BofA first to check for any holds or processing delays on their end before spending hours trying to reach EDD.

Good point about the debit card. Also worth checking if maybe the amounts were different - sometimes people assume it should be equal but one week might have had a partial payment applied if there was any earnings reporting discrepancy.

same thing happened to me like 3 weeks ago, turned out one of my weeks got kicked into a mini-adjudication thing even tho the portal said issued. took about 10 days for the second payment to show up on its own

Authorok that's actually reassuring, so it can fix itself? Did you have to do anything or did it just post eventually?

just posted on its own, didn't do anything. but it was nerve wracking for sure

I went through something similar and spent two weeks trying to call California EDD to get a straight answer. Couldn't get through to save my life - either got the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message or the automated system would just disconnect me. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I was skeptical but it worked, got an agent on the phone who explained exactly which week had an issue and why. For a one-week payment discrepancy like this you really do need to talk to someone because the portal won't show you the full picture.

does that actually work? seems almost too good to be true when EDD phones are basically impossible

There are actually several specific reasons California EDD might only release one week of payment from a two-week certification. The most common ones I've seen discussed here: (1) Your claim hit its benefit year end and the second week crossed into a renewal period. (2) One week had a different answer pattern that triggered an automated eligibility question - sometimes even answering slightly differently than usual flags a week. (3) There was a payment offset applied to one week for a previous overpayment balance. (4) The weekly benefit amount calculation showed a discrepancy on one week. Look at your payment history in UI Online in detail - each week should show the exact amount authorized separately.

NeonNomad
AuthorThis is really helpful. I went back and looked more carefully and one week shows the full amount but the other shows a lower authorized amount. Why would the authorized amount be different if I answered everything the same?
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
If the authorized amount is lower that might indicate a partial earnings offset or California EDD recalculated something. What state week does it correspond to - is it possible that week had any income at all, like a side gig payment that posted that week even if you didn't work?

Also sometimes direct deposit timing makes it look like only one payment came through when actually the second is in transit. Check your transaction history not just your balance

UGH the California EDD system is SO broken. I had THREE weeks where random payments were missing and every time I tried to get help the portal was useless, the phone line was impossible, and the chat bot just kept sending me in circles. Nobody should have to fight this hard just to get the unemployment benefits they're entitled to. The whole UI system is designed to make you give up.

Valid frustration but to be fair sometimes these payment discrepancies do resolve on their own within a few business days. Not saying don't follow up but worth giving it 5-7 business days before assuming the worst

wait are you checking the EDD debit card app or actual bank statements? because the BofA EDD card app has shown wrong balances before, like it doesn't always update in real time. try logging into the actual bofa website not the app

One thing to specifically look for in your UI Online account: go to 'Payment Activity' and click on each individual week rather than just looking at the summary. California EDD sometimes issues what they call a 'supplemental payment' separately which might show as a second transaction a few days after the first. Also check if you have any mail or notices pending in your message center - sometimes California EDD sends an electronic notice about a payment hold that doesn't trigger any visible status change on the main claim page.
0 coins
NeonNomad
AuthorJust checked the message center and there IS a notice in there I hadn't seen! It says one week is pending verification of job search activities. I thought I had submitted my work search log but maybe it didn't register?
0 coins
Dylan Mitchell
That's your answer right there. California EDD requires you to have 3 job search activities per week and they sometimes randomly audit to verify. You need to log into UI Online and make sure your work search record for that specific week is fully completed with all the required fields - employer name, contact method, position applied for, and date. Once that's submitted the hold should clear within a few days.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Hashemi
Yes this! The job search audit thing catches so many people off guard. The weekly certification asks if you did your job searches but the actual verification of what those searches were is a separate record you maintain. Make sure your CalJOBS profile is also updated because California EDD sometimes cross-references it.

Going through the exact same thing right now and it's causing me so much anxiety. My second week has been in some kind of limbo for 8 days and I have literally no idea what triggered it. I filled out my job search log, I wasn't working, I answered everything honestly. I'm terrified they're going to say I did something wrong and make me pay everything back.

I know how scary this feels. Try not to assume the worst - payment processing hiccups happen all the time with California EDD and most of them resolve without any penalty to the claimant
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
The fact that there's no disqualification notice is actually a good sign. A true eligibility issue would generate a formal notice. What you're probably experiencing is just a processing delay or a routine verification check, both of which typically clear on their own.

Thank you both, that helps a little. I just wish EDD would communicate better so we weren't all sitting here guessing

For anyone still struggling to get through to California EDD by phone to sort out payment issues like this - I want to reiterate that Claimyr really does work. After my experience using it I've recommended it to two people in my family who had EDD issues and both got connected to agents. The site is claimyr.com and you can see a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. When you're missing unemployment payments and can't afford to wait days for the phone system to cooperate it's genuinely worth trying.

The key thing about Claimyr is that once you actually get an EDD agent on the line they can see the exact status of every single week on your claim and tell you precisely what's holding anything up. Way better than guessing from the portal

So did OP figure out what happened? I'm in a similar boat and curious if the job search log thing ended up being the answer
0 coins
NeonNomad
AuthorYes!! It was exactly the job search verification thing that the message center notice said. I went in and completed the full job search record for that week - I had only partially filled it out. Submitted it yesterday and woke up this morning to the second payment on my card. Such a relief but also frustrating that the portal doesn't make it more obvious when something is incomplete.

Really glad it resolved! And yes the California EDD portal is notorious for not surfacing important notices prominently. Always worth checking the message center specifically rather than just looking at the claim status dashboard.

Can I ask a dumb question - how do you even know if your job search log is complete vs incomplete? Like what does a fully completed entry look like? I always just answer yes to the job search question during certification and I don't know if I'm supposed to be doing something else too
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
Not a dumb question at all, a lot of people don't realize there are actually two separate things. During your biweekly certification you answer YES to having done job searches. But separately, California EDD requires you to keep a record of your job search activities that they can request at any time. You need at least 3 contacts per week (so 6 per certification period). Each entry needs: employer name, employer contact info, position you applied for, date of contact, and method of contact. You can maintain this record on paper OR through your CalJOBS account. If EDD audits your job search they'll ask to see this log.
0 coins
Amina Bah
Oh wow I did not know about the separate log I have just been answering yes during certification this whole time. Going to fix this immediately

Dylan Mitchell
Also make sure your CalJOBS profile is active and you've logged in within the required timeframe - California EDD often checks whether your profile is current as part of job search verification. If you haven't logged into CalJOBS in a while do that today.

ive been on standby status so i dont have the job search requirement but my payment still came through short one week last month. different situation but same confusing outcome lol
0 coins
Fatima Al-Hashemi
Standby status is different yes - you're temporarily exempt from the 3 contacts per week requirement. For standby claimants a missing week payment is usually either a standby status expiration issue (your employer didn't renew the standby certification in time) or a routine audit. Did your employer renew on time?
0 coins
Oliver Becker
Actually I don't even know if they renewed lol I just assumed they handled it. Maybe that's the problem
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
That is very likely the issue. With standby status the employer has to periodically confirm to California EDD that you're still expected to return to work. If that lapses even briefly EDD may suspend your payments for the weeks where standby wasn't confirmed. Talk to your HR or employer contact.

The one week waiting period thing confuses so many people including me when I first filed. I thought California EDD had made a mistake and panicked, spent an entire day trying to call, and eventually got through to an agent who explained it's just how the program works. Your very first week eligible is always unpaid as a waiting period. Just FYI for anyone who's new to filing.
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
wait so you ALWAYS lose the first week? that seems unfair
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
Yeah it's just how California UI works, it's called the waiting period week. Some people think of it as EDD holding one week in reserve. You'll get paid for it at the end of your claim if you exhaust benefits but most people just take it as a one week delay at the start
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
To clarify: the waiting period week is the first week of your claim that you're otherwise eligible. You don't get paid for it upfront. California did temporarily waive the waiting period during COVID but that's no longer in effect, so yes, everyone serves a one-week unpaid waiting period now.

Something nobody mentioned yet - sometimes California EDD short pays because your WBA (weekly benefit amount) got recalculated. This can happen if they get updated wage records from your former employer that differ from what was used to calculate your original benefit amount. If your benefit year is active they can adjust the WBA mid-claim. Worth checking if the payment amount on the short week equals your normal WBA or something different.
0 coins
NeonNomad
AuthorFor my situation it turned out to be the job search thing, but this is good to know for others. I didn't even know EDD could recalculate your WBA in the middle of a claim.

Yep it's relatively rare but it happens. Usually triggers a Notice of Computation mailed to you. Another reason to keep your mailing address updated in UI Online AND on your ID.me verified account.

What really gets me is how California EDD's own portal is completely inadequate for giving claimants actual information about their claims. Other states apparently have portals where you can see the detailed status of every single action on your account. California EDD shows you like three status options and a payment history and then expects you to just trust the black box. We deserve real transparency about our own claims.
0 coins
Sofia Martinez
lol 'trust the black box' is so accurate. I've had weeks where everything looks fine and then just... no money. No explanation.

Fatima Al-Hashemi
The portal has actually improved somewhat in recent years but yes it still lacks granular detail. The best workaround I know is to look at the full claim notes which you can request through a written inquiry, but that takes time. For faster answers calling EDD directly - or using something like Claimyr at claimyr.com to actually get through - is still the most reliable way to get your specific claim details.

Update from my end: I had the same single week payment issue and after reading this thread I checked my CalJOBS profile. It had been deactivated because I hadn't logged in for 90 days. EDD flagged one of my weeks pending job search verification and since my CalJOBS was inactive it looked like I wasn't actively job searching. Reactivated my profile, submitted my paper job search log through the message center, and the payment released the next business day. So definitely check CalJOBS if you're having this issue.

Connor O'Reilly
This is really good info thank you. So EDD actually checks CalJOBS activity not just whether you answer yes during certification?
0 coins
Javier Hernandez
That's what the EDD agent told me when I finally got through to someone. They can see CalJOBS login activity and if your profile goes dormant it can trigger a review of your job search compliance
0 coins
Dylan Mitchell
This is accurate. CalJOBS inactivity is a known trigger for job search audits. Best practice is to log into CalJOBS at minimum once a week while you're collecting UI - update your profile, apply to positions through the system, and it creates a clear record of your active job search that EDD can easily verify.

Does anyone know if calling an EDD representative actually does anything faster or do they just tell you to wait? Asking because I've been told by an agent before that they can't manually release payments and I have to just wait for the system to process
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
It depends on the reason for the hold. For some issues like a job search audit or identity verification flag, an agent can actually annotate your account and escalate the review which does speed things up. For other issues like system processing delays or employer wage record discrepancies they genuinely can't do much except confirm what's happening. Either way, knowing WHY there's an issue is valuable even if they can't immediately fix it.

Getting through to an EDD agent is absolutely worth it for this kind of issue - even if they can't flip a switch to release the payment they can tell you exactly what's needed to resolve it and sometimes they CAN intervene. The hard part is actually getting through. That's where Claimyr (claimyr.com) helped me so much - once I was actually talking to a real person the call was productive, it was just reaching that person that had been impossible before.

Just want to add for anyone reading this later - I had a single week payment issue that turned out to be an overpayment offset. I apparently had a small outstanding overpayment balance from a previous claim years ago that I didn't even know about. California EDD was silently applying part of each payment to that balance without notifying me clearly. Eventually one week the offset consumed almost the entire weekly amount. Found out by requesting my full payment history and seeing deduction codes I didn't recognize.
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
Oh wow I didn't know EDD could do that without really notifying you. That seems like something they should communicate more clearly
0 coins
Emma Davis
They do send a notice but it gets buried in the message center and if you're not checking it closely you can miss it. Always open every single message in your UI Online inbox even if it looks generic
0 coins
Zainab Yusuf
To add to this: if you have an overpayment offset happening you can actually request a waiver if repaying would cause financial hardship, or you can set up a repayment plan which may result in smaller deductions per week rather than taking most of one week's payment at once. There's a form for this - DE 1446 - that you can submit through the mail or through a UI Online message.

Thread summary for anyone who finds this later and is wondering why California EDD only paid one week: The most common reasons seem to be (1) waiting period week at claim start, (2) job search verification audit - check your message center AND your CalJOBS activity, (3) CalJOBS profile inactivity triggering a review, (4) overpayment offset being applied silently, (5) standby status lapse, (6) WBA recalculation. If you can't figure it out from the portal check your message center carefully. If you need to talk to an actual person, good luck with the phones - a lot of people in this thread mentioned Claimyr (claimyr.com) as a way to actually get through.
