What is unemployment right now? California EDD rates and claim info for 2025

I've been out of work for about two weeks now after my company did a round of layoffs in the warehouse I was working at. First time I've ever had to deal with any of this. I keep seeing different numbers thrown around online and honestly I have no idea what unemployment even pays right now in California or how the whole thing works. Like what is unemployment right now in terms of weekly benefit amounts? Is there a standard amount or does it depend on what you were making? I filed my initial claim last Thursday and I'm just trying to figure out what to expect. My rent is due in 3 weeks and I really need to understand if this is going to cover even part of my bills while I job hunt. Any info would be super helpful because the EDD website is kind of overwhelming.

Good news is California has one of the better unemployment programs in the country. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is calculated based on your highest earning quarter in the base period — basically they look at your wages from roughly 5-17 months before you filed. The current maximum weekly benefit amount in California for 2025 is $450 per week, and the minimum is $40. Most people end up somewhere in the middle depending on what they were earning. So if you were making around $25/hour full time you'd probably be closer to that upper range. EDD calculates it at about 60-70% of your average weekly earnings up to that cap.

0 coins

Ok so $450 is the max? That seems lower than I expected honestly. My rent alone is $1,800. Is there any way to get more than that or is $450 hard cap?

0 coins

Yeah $450 is the hard cap unfortunately. California hasn't raised it in a while which is frustrating given cost of living here. You'd need to find part time work to supplement if your rent is that high.

0 coins

To add to this — the benefit period is up to 26 weeks so you have some runway to job search. Make sure you're filing your weekly certifications every week even while waiting for approval or you'll lose those weeks permanently.

0 coins

Also important to understand — unemployment right now does NOT have any federal supplement like it did during COVID. So what California pays is what you get, no extra $600 or $300 per week on top like there used to be. Just wanted to clarify that since a lot of people still think those programs exist and they were ended years ago.

0 coins

Yeah I did wonder about that, I remembered hearing about extra money during the pandemic. Good to know so I'm not expecting something that doesn't exist anymore.

0 coins

this is right, those pandemic programs are long gone. just regular UI now

One thing that trips people up is actually getting through to EDD to ask questions about your specific claim amount or status. I filed back in January and had questions about my WBA calculation that I couldn't get answered through the website. Spent 3 days trying to call and kept hitting busy signals or getting disconnected. Someone here actually pointed me toward a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you connected to a live EDD agent without sitting on hold forever. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — honestly was a lifesaver when I needed to understand why my benefit amount looked wrong. Might be worth bookmarking for when your claim processes and you have specific questions.

0 coins

Wait so even just calling EDD to ask a basic question is that hard? That's kind of scary. Thanks for the tip I'll check out that link.

0 coins

Calling EDD is genuinely one of the most frustrating experiences. I've been hung up on, transferred to a busy signal, and told to call back literally hundreds of times. Anything that helps get through to an actual human is worth knowing about.

0 coins

claimyr worked for me too when I needed to verify my identity issue was resolved. got through in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own

To directly answer your question about what unemployment is right now in California — here's the full breakdown for 2025: Weekly Benefit Amount: $40 minimum, $450 maximum Benefit Duration: Up to 26 weeks (standard) Waiting Period: California has a one-week unpaid waiting period built in Job Search Requirement: You must contact at least 3 employers per week and log them in your UI Online account Eligibility: You must have earned at least $1,300 in your highest base period quarter, OR $900 in your highest quarter AND total base period wages of 1.25x your highest quarter The most important thing right now is filing your weekly certifications starting from your first eligible week. Don't skip weeks even if your claim is still in adjudication.

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed, thank you! One question — what does 'adjudication' mean? I saw that word on my UI Online account and I'm not sure if it's a problem.

0 coins

Adjudication just means EDD is reviewing your claim to verify eligibility — it doesn't automatically mean something is wrong, it's often routine for new claims or when there's any question about the separation reason. Usually resolves on its own within a couple weeks.

0 coins

' adjudication sent me into a full panic when I first saw it lol. turns out mine cleared up after 10 days with no action needed on my part. just keep filing your weeklycerts!

Something nobody mentions — the base period calculation can really surprise people. EDD doesn't look at your most recent months of work. They look at the 12 months that ended about 3-4 months before you filed. So if you had a really high earning period that's now over a year ago, that could actually help you. Conversely if you recently got a raise or promotion, that higher income might not be reflected in your benefit amount yet because it's too recent.

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't know that. I actually got a raise 4 months ago so that might affect my calculation. Is there a way to use more recent wages?

0 coins

There's an alternate base period that EDD can use if you don't qualify under the standard base period — it uses your most recent 4 completed quarters. You'd need to request this specifically if the standard base period leaves you ineligible.

0 coins

This is accurate. The alternate base period is a real option but EDD doesn't automatically use it, you do have to request it and only if you don't meet the minimum earnings threshold under the standard base period.

0 coins

ugh the $450 cap is honestly a joke in california. like they expect people to live on $450 a week?? my studio apartment costs more than that. the whole system feels like it was designed for a completely different era. I know this doesn't help OP but just had to say it

0 coins

preaching to the choir. $450 hasn't changed in years while rent has gone through the roof

0 coins

The cap is frustrating but it is what it is for now. Best thing anyone can do is treat job searching seriously while on UI and document everything in case of any issues later.

0 coins

What really gets me is when EDD messes up and overpays you and then wants it all back months later. happened to my cousin and she had to pay back thousands she'd already spent on rent

0 coins

For the job search requirement — just want to make sure you know the current rules since they changed these post-pandemic. You need to make 3 employer contacts per week and record them in your UI Online account. An 'employer contact' means actually applying for a job or reaching out to a potential employer, not just browsing listings. CalJOBS is the state system you might also need to register with. EDD sometimes checks these records so don't fake entries.

0 coins

Do networking events or LinkedIn applications count as employer contacts?

0 coins

LinkedIn applications definitely count. Networking events are a gray area — attending alone probably doesn't count but if you have a documented conversation with a hiring manager or submit a resume that would likely qualify.

0 coins

I asked an EDD rep about this directly (finally got through after using Claimyr when I couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks) and they said any documented outreach to an employer about a specific position counts. Email applications, online applications, in-person applications all work.

0 coins

Just want to share my experience since I was in almost the exact same situation 6 months ago — first time filing, totally confused about what unemployment pays. My WBA ended up being $387/week based on my earnings. EDD direct deposited to my Bank of America debit card within about 10 days of my first certified week being processed. The uncertainty is the hardest part but once it starts flowing it's pretty reliable as long as you keep filing your weekly certs.

0 coins

This is really reassuring to hear, thank you! Did you have any issues with the waiting week? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to certify for that first week or skip it.

0 coins

You DO certify for the waiting week, you just don't get paid for it. It's confusing but you still have to complete that certification — if you skip it EDD might think you stopped claiming.

0 coins

This is correct — always certify every week starting from your first eligible week regardless of whether payment will be issued. Missing even one week cannot be backdated later.

0 coins

Quick tip on the EDD website being overwhelming — the part you actually use most is UI Online at myedd.edd.ca.gov. That's where you file your weekly certifications (every two weeks you answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, were available etc.), check your payment history, and see any notices about your claim. The main EDD website has a ton of information but you really only need UI Online for day to day stuff.

0 coins

Oh good to know, I've been trying to navigate the whole EDD website and getting lost. I'll focus on UI Online.

0 coins

Also download the UI Online mobile app if you're on iOS or Android. Makes the biweekly certifications way faster than doing it on desktop.

0 coins

idk why everyone makes this so complicated lol. you file, you wait, you get money. took me like 2 weeks start to finish

0 coins

lucky you lol some people wait months especially if theres any issue with the claim

0 coins

yeah 2 weeks is not the typical experience for everyone. some claims hit adjudication and sit there for 6-8 weeks with no explanation

0 coins

fair I guess I just didn't have any issues. hope OP has a smooth experience too

0 coins

One more thing about what unemployment looks like right now — there's no extended benefits program currently active in California. Extended benefits (EB) only kicks in when the state unemployment rate hits certain thresholds, and California's rate doesn't currently trigger that. So plan for 26 weeks max. If you haven't found work by week 20 start job searching more aggressively — don't assume an extension will appear.

0 coins

That's really good to know. I'm hoping to find something new within a couple months but good to have realistic expectations.

0 coins

26 weeks goes faster than you think. I was convinced I'd have a job within a month and it took almost 5 months. Plan for the longer scenario.

0 coins

Also worth knowing — if you do find part time work while on UI you don't necessarily have to stop claiming. California has a partial benefits system where you can work part time and still receive reduced unemployment benefits. You just report your earnings when you certify.

0 coins

The identity verification step catches a lot of people off guard too. EDD uses ID.me for identity verification now and if you haven't gone through that process you might have a hold on your claim. It's an online verification that usually involves taking photos of your ID and sometimes a video selfie. Get that done ASAP if you haven't already because holds for ID verification can delay your first payment significantly.

0 coins

I think I did this during the application process but I'm not 100% sure it went through. How do I check?

0 coins

Log into UI Online and check your inbox for any notices or alerts. If there's a pending ID verification notice it will show there. You can also check your ID.me account directly to see if your California EDD connection is verified.

0 coins

ID.me tripped me up too — I thought I finished it but there was a secondary verification step I missed. Took an extra week to figure out why my payment was held up.

0 coins

I had a nightmare situation where my claim showed a different WBA than I expected and I couldn't figure out why. Tried calling EDD for two weeks straight, never got through, kept getting the 'we have high call volume' message and disconnect. Finally used Claimyr at claimyr.com to get connected — the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains how it works. Turns out EDD had pulled wages from the wrong employer in my base period and once I talked to an agent they corrected it in like 10 minutes. Point is — if your benefit amount seems wrong, you can get it corrected but you basically need to talk to a live agent to do it.

0 coins

That's scary that they can pull the wrong wages. I'll keep a close eye on my WBA when it posts. And glad you were able to get it fixed!

0 coins

EDD making data errors and then making it impossible to call and fix them is such a classic move. at least there are workarounds now

0 coins

If you do notice a discrepancy in your WBA it's worth acting on quickly because you have a limited window to appeal the benefit determination. Don't wait hoping it'll fix itself.

0 coins

does anyone know if unemployment benefits count as taxable income? asking for my situation but probably relevant to OP too

0 coins

Yes, unemployment benefits are federally taxable income. California does NOT tax UI benefits at the state level though. You'll get a 1099-G from EDD in January. You can opt to have 10% federal withholding taken out of each payment if you want to avoid a tax bill — you can set this up in UI Online.

0 coins

oh wow did not realize California doesn't tax it. that's actually helpful. thanks

0 coins

The 1099-G is important to save — if you don't receive it in the mail or miss it you can access it through UI Online. Don't lose it come tax season.

0 coins

NOBODY TELLS YOU about the part where you have to certify for the weeks BEFORE your claim is approved!! I thought I could just wait until approved and then start certifying. WRONG. I lost three weeks of benefits because they couldn't be backdated. Please don't make my mistake OP — start certifying immediately even if your claim says pending or in adjudication

0 coins

Oh no I really hope I didn't make this mistake. I filed last Thursday — do I certify starting now or do I wait for some kind of confirmation?

0 coins

You should have gotten an email telling you when your first certification date is. Check your email including spam. If you're not sure call EDD or log into UI Online and look for a 'certify for benefits' option.

0 coins

Your first certification date should be about 2 weeks after your claim start date. UI Online will show you a 'certify now' button when it's time. But yes — certify as soon as that button appears, don't wait for approval.

To wrap up a lot of the good info in this thread for anyone landing here from a search — here's the quick summary of California unemployment in 2025: • WBA range: $40-$450/week based on prior earnings • Duration: Up to 26 weeks, no extended benefits currently • No federal supplement (pandemic programs ended years ago) • One unpaid waiting week (still must certify for it) • Job search: 3 employer contacts/week, documented in UI Online • ID.me verification required • File weekly certs EVERY week starting from day one • Partial benefits available if you find part time work • Federal taxes apply, California state tax does NOT apply Hope this helps whoever finds this thread!

0 coins

This is the best summary I've seen anywhere. Saving this comment. Thank you so much to everyone who responded, I feel so much more prepared now.

0 coins

Should pin this honestly. Answers basically everything a first timer needs to know.

0 coins

Good summary. I'd add — keep copies of everything. Every document EDD sends, every employer contact you log, your pay stubs from your old job. If anything goes wrong with your claim you'll want a paper trail.

0 coins

solid breakdown

0 coins

One last thing — if your employer contests your unemployment claim (which some do to keep their rates low) your claim will go into adjudication and you might get a questionnaire asking about your separation reason. Fill it out completely and honestly. If your employer says you were fired for misconduct and you weren't, you have the right to appeal the determination. Don't just accept a denial.

0 coins

My layoff was part of a mass layoff so hopefully they won't contest it. But good to know this can happen.

0 coins

Mass layoffs generally don't get contested since the employer can't claim misconduct. You're probably in the clear. Contested claims are usually when someone was terminated for cause or quit voluntarily.

0 coins

Even if yours does get contested somehow — appeals are free and you have 30 days from the notice date to file one. Don't miss that window if it happens.
