Is unemployment high right now? What California EDD claimants are seeing in 2025
Been out of work for about 6 weeks now after my employer did a pretty significant round of layoffs in the logistics sector. When I filed my California EDD claim I honestly expected it to move fast since I've heard the system is more streamlined post-COVID. But my claim has been sitting in processing longer than I expected and when I try calling to ask what's going on I literally cannot get through to a single human being. Makes me wonder - is unemployment high right now? Like are there just way more people filing claims than usual and that's why California EDD is slammed? My UI Online dashboard shows my claim is active but I haven't seen any payment hit my Bank of America debit card yet and it's been almost two full weeks since I certified for my first weekly claim. Trying to figure out if this is a system volume thing or if there's actually something wrong with my specific claim that needs to be addressed.

To actually answer your question - yes, unemployment claims in California have been ticking upward through early 2025, especially in tech, logistics, and some retail sectors. California EDD has been processing higher volumes and that does translate to longer wait times on both payments and phone support. Doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with your individual claim, but it does explain the delays you're seeing.

AuthorThat's actually reassuring to hear in a weird way. So you think it's more of a volume issue than something specifically flagged on my claim?

same thing happened to me in january, claim was fine just slow bc of the volume

Gabrielle Dubois
Exactly. If your UI Online portal shows the claim as active and not flagged for adjudication or missing information, you're likely just in a processing queue. The first payment often takes 3-4 weeks from initial filing including the one-week waiting period California EDD builds in automatically.

The waiting period thing is huge and nobody tells you about it upfront. California EDD has a mandatory unpaid waiting week built into every new claim - that first week you certify for, you're not getting paid for it. So whatever week you think is week one is actually week zero in terms of payment. Your real first payment covers week two of your claim.

AuthorWait WHAT. Nobody mentioned this anywhere when I filed. So I've basically only been eligible for one week of payments so far not two?
0 coins
Ingrid Larsson
Yep. It's frustrating but it's how it works. Week 1 = unpaid waiting period. Week 2 onwards = paid if you certified correctly and your claim is approved.

this caught me off guard too when i first filed. the UI Online interface doesn't make it super clear

I went through something almost identical last spring - layoff from a warehouse job, couldn't get answers from California EDD, kept wondering if something was broken with my claim. What finally helped me actually get a live person on the phone was using a service called Claimyr. You go to claimyr.com and it basically navigates the California EDD phone system for you and calls you back when an agent is available instead of you sitting on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - I was skeptical but honestly it saved me hours of frustration and the agent I got was able to confirm my claim was just in normal processing queue with no issues flagged.

AuthorI've never heard of this before. So it actually gets you through to a real California EDD agent and not just an automated system?

Zainab Mahmoud
Yeah a real human agent. That's the whole point - California EDD's hold times are brutal especially when claim volumes are high like they are now. Claimyr handles the waiting part and contacts you when someone picks up.

gonna look into this, been trying to reach EDD for like 4 days straight about my adjudication hold

to answer ur original question more directly - California EDD released data showing new claims filings were up noticeably in Q1 2025 compared to same period 2024. tech sector layoffs plus some manufacturing slowdowns. so yes unemployment IS higher right now which explains why everything from processing times to phone wait times is stretched thin

This tracks with what I'm seeing in my area too. Lots of former tech workers filing for the first time ever and not knowing how the system works which probably adds to the call volume too.

Authorthat makes total sense actually. first timers like me clogging up the phones trying to figure out basics

okay real talk the California EDD phone system is a NIGHTMARE regardless of how many people are filing. I've been dealing with this department for three separate claims over the past several years and it has never been easy to reach anyone. High unemployment just makes a broken system even more broken lol

Facts. The hold times were ridiculous even when unemployment was quote unquote low

Exactly. People always blame volume but the infrastructure hasn't kept up for years. California EDD needs a serious overhaul.

I mean agreed but also they did improve UI Online quite a bit so at least you can do more stuff without calling now than you used to

One thing worth checking on your UI Online account - look for any notices or messages under your inbox tab. Sometimes California EDD will flag something small like a question about your last employer's payroll dates and the claim just sits there waiting for you to respond without ever sending you an email notification about it. Had this happen and I thought everything was fine for two weeks when actually they were waiting on me the whole time.
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorOh wow I hadn't thought of that - checking the inbox tab right now actually. I've been watching the payment status page but not the messages section.
0 coins
Yara Assad
Yeah the messages section is separate from the notifications. Look for anything that says 'action required' or has a deadline date on it. If there's something there, respond ASAP because there are usually time limits.

good tip, this is exactly what happened to my cousin, sat there for weeks before he noticed the message

From what I understand about the current California job market, the sectors seeing the most layoffs right now are tech (obviously), some logistics/supply chain roles, and certain parts of financial services. If you're in any of those fields you're unfortunately one of many people who filed around the same time which 100% impacts California EDD processing speed.
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorYeah logistics is exactly what I'm in. So basically I'm in a mini surge of claims from my own sector. Great timing on my part lol

Lena Müller
Ha, the timing is rough but at least your claim is valid and you're entitled to these benefits. Just gotta wait out the queue unfortunately.

Does anyone know if California EDD prioritizes claims in any particular order? Like do people who've been waiting longer automatically move up or is it totally random? I'm at week 5 of my claim still in pending and wondering if I'm just lost in the system somehow
0 coins
Gabrielle Dubois
Claims are generally processed in order of filing date but adjudication cases (where they need to investigate your eligibility) get pulled out of the regular queue and handled separately which is why some people wait way longer than others.
0 coins
Olivia Clark
Mine doesn't say adjudication it just says pending. Does that mean it's in the normal queue?
0 coins
Gabrielle Dubois
Pending usually means it's in standard processing. Adjudication is a specific status that shows up when there's an eligibility question being reviewed. If you're just seeing pending you're probably in the normal flow, just backed up.

UPDATE on my situation since I mentioned it above - I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to a California EDD agent within a couple hours. Turns out my claim had a minor employer verification issue that was holding it up - nothing serious but it wouldn't have resolved on its own. Agent fixed it while I was on the phone. Highly recommend claimyr.com if you're stuck trying to reach EDD, especially right now when call volumes are high.

Dmitri Volkov
AuthorThis is so helpful to hear. I'm definitely going to try Claimyr today. Glad your issue got resolved!

So glad it worked out for you! Yeah that employer verification thing is exactly the kind of minor hold that just sits there forever unless you actually talk to someone.

Carlos Mendoza
how long did it actually take from when you signed up to when you got the call back?

For me it was about 2 hours but I've seen people say it varies. Either way way faster than the 4 days I spent getting nowhere trying to call myself

i work in HR and we've processed more separations in the last 4 months than in the previous year combined. so yes unemployment is genuinely high right now, this isn't just a California EDD processing problem. actual layoff numbers are up. your situation is unfortunately pretty common.

Dmitri Volkov
AuthorThat's sobering but good context. Makes me feel less like I did something wrong and more like I'm just caught in a larger economic wave.

Javier Morales
Exactly. And for what it's worth most of the people we've had to let go have eventually gotten their California EDD benefits sorted out, it just takes persistence. The system is slow but it does work.

Something nobody has mentioned - make sure your Bank of America EDD debit card is actually activated if you chose that payment method. I spent an entire week thinking my payment hadn't processed when actually it had but my card wasn't activated. The card comes in a plain white envelope that looks like junk mail so easy to miss or accidentally toss
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorOh no - I think I did get an envelope like that but I'm not 100% sure if I activated it. Checking right now...
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
Check the Bank of America EDD card website directly - bankofamericaedd.com or call the number on the card itself. You can see the balance even before fully activating through their phone system.

this is such a real thing, the plain envelope is such a bad design choice. they should make it way more obvious

wait so if unemployment is high right now does that mean California EDD could run out of money at some point?? I've heard unemployment insurance funds can get depleted

California's UI trust fund situation is something that fluctuates but benefits to individual claimants don't stop even if the fund needs to borrow from federal sources. Your benefits won't be cut off mid-claim because of fund levels. That's more of a long-term state fiscal issue than something that affects you directly.
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
oh okay that's a relief I was lowkey panicking about that
0 coins
TechNinja
California already borrowed from the federal unemployment fund during COVID and is slowly paying it back. It's a real issue for the state budget but doesn't impact claimant payments directly as the other person said

Something practical that helped me get answers faster when I couldn't reach California EDD by phone - I sent a written inquiry through the UI Online message center. It's not instant but I got a response within about a week and it was specific to my claim situation. Not as good as talking to an agent but better than nothing if you're stuck
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorHow do you access the message center? I see notifications but I'm not sure where to actually send a message.
0 coins
Yara Assad
Log into UI Online, go to the 'Contact Us' section, there should be an option to send a message through your account. It creates a paper trail too which is useful if you ever need to reference what California EDD told you.

my roommate just got approved after waiting almost 6 weeks so there is light at the end of the tunnel. she never got a clear explanation for the delay but the money just showed up one day and then started coming on the regular schedule after that
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorThis is genuinely comforting to hear, thank you. Did she do anything specific to push it along or did it just eventually resolve on its own?

Tyrone Johnson
she called a bunch of times without getting through and then eventually reached someone and they said nothing was wrong it was just backed up. so kind of both i guess

Also want to flag - if you're doing your weekly certifications make sure you're answering the job search questions correctly. California EDD requires you to document 3 job search activities per week right now. If you're answering those certification questions without actually logging search activities in your CalJOBS account that could cause issues down the line even if your initial claim gets approved fine.
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorI've been doing the certifications but I honestly didn't know about the CalJOBS requirement. Do I need to have created an account there too?
0 coins
Lena Müller
Yes, you're supposed to register with CalJOBS as part of the California EDD requirements. It's at caljobs.ca.gov - you register there and that's where you're supposed to track and verify your job search activities each week.
0 coins
Carlos Mendoza
this is real, California EDD can audit your job search records. better to set up CalJOBS now and backfill what you can remember doing

Just adding to the Claimyr recommendation - I actually used it again recently when I had a question about my claim's maximum benefit amount calculation. The agent I got was actually super helpful and walked me through exactly how California EDD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter. The service at claimyr.com really is the best way to get actual answers about your specific claim when things are unclear.
0 coins
Olivia Clark
How do they calculate the weekly amount exactly? Mine seems lower than I expected
0 coins
Zainab Mahmoud
They look at your base period which is roughly the first four of the last five completed quarters of wages, find your highest earning quarter, and your weekly benefit amount is about 60-70% of your average weekly wage from that period up to the current max. It's worth having an agent walk you through it with your actual numbers if it seems off.

Olivia Clark
okay that's helpful. I'm going to try Claimyr and ask them to review my calculation

to summarize what this thread has covered for anyone finding it later: yes unemployment claims in california are elevated in 2025 particularly in tech and logistics. california edd processing times are running longer than usual as a result. first payments can take 3-4 weeks minimum including the mandatory waiting week. check your UI Online inbox for action required messages. make sure your BofA debit card is activated. register on CalJOBS for job search tracking. and if you need to reach a live agent claimyr.com is a legit option when you can't get through normally

AuthorThis is such a helpful summary. Thank you everyone in this thread - you've answered more questions for me in an hour than California EDD's website has in six weeks of filing.

Great summary. The CalJOBS point is one people skip a lot and then get surprised by it during a random EDD audit of job search compliance.

ALSO nobody mentioned this but if your claim is from a layoff vs. being fired vs. quitting voluntarily those are processed VERY differently by California EDD. layoffs are generally straightforward, terminations for cause trigger automatic adjudication, and voluntary quits require you to prove good cause for leaving. make sure California EDD has the correct separation reason on file for you
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
AuthorMine is definitely a layoff - they gave everyone formal layoff notices with the company letterhead. Should I upload that documentation somewhere in UI Online?
0 coins
TechNinja
Yes, scan it and upload it through the document upload section of UI Online. Having that documentation proactively in your file is always better than waiting for EDD to ask for it.

Keisha Thompson
this is really good advice, the separation reason can make or break how fast your claim moves

Final thought from me - one thing that really helped my friends who've gone through California EDD claims recently is keeping a personal spreadsheet tracking every certification date, every call attempt, every message sent, and every notice received. If there's ever a discrepancy or an overpayment notice later having your own records is invaluable. California EDD isn't always right and you want documentation on your side.

Dmitri Volkov
AuthorStarting that spreadsheet today. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful. Going to check my UI Online inbox, activate my debit card, register on CalJOBS, and try Claimyr to get a live agent on the line to confirm my claim status. Thank you all seriously.
