If you quit a job can you get unemployment in California EDD?
So I've been going back and forth on this for weeks and finally just did it - I quit my job last Tuesday. The environment had gotten genuinely toxic, my manager was creating a hostile situation, and after 4 years I just couldn't take it anymore. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I made a huge mistake financially. My coworker told me that if you quit a job you can never get unemployment benefits, but another friend said there are exceptions. I have no idea what the actual California EDD rules are on this. Did I just completely screw myself out of any UI benefits? Has anyone actually successfully filed after quitting voluntarily?

Short answer: yes you CAN potentially get unemployment after quitting, but it's not automatic and California EDD puts the burden of proof on YOU to show the quit was for 'good cause.' Good cause under California law basically means you had a real, compelling reason that a reasonable person would also find intolerable. Things like harassment, unsafe working conditions, significant reduction in pay or hours, being asked to do something illegal, or a medical condition that your employer refused to accommodate. Just being unhappy or burned out generally doesn't qualify on its own. You'll need to document everything you can.

AuthorThe hostile manager situation - does that count? It wasn't like official documented harassment but it was a really bad environment.

Natasha Petrova
It can count but you need specifics. Vague 'bad environment' claims are tough. If there were specific incidents, witnesses, any emails or texts, write them all down now while they're fresh. California EDD will ask for details.

This is accurate. I work in HR and we deal with this a lot. Document everything before you file. Dates, what was said, who witnessed it. The more concrete your documentation the better your shot at qualifying.

went thru this exact thing last year. quit because my boss was making my life hell. filed for UI and got put into adjudication which is basically where California EDD investigates your claim to decide if you had good cause. took about 5 weeks but i eventually got approved. the key was i had saved some text messages from my manager that were pretty clearly inappropriate and i listed specific dates of incidents in my statement

Author5 weeks in adjudication omg. Were you able to pay bills during that time? Did they back pay you for those weeks?
0 coins
Emma Davis
yes they backpay you for all the weeks you certified during adjudication if you get approved. so keep filing your weekly certifications even if your claim is pending!!

THIS. Do not stop filing weekly claims while waiting. So many people make that mistake and lose out on weeks of benefits they would have gotten.

I want to flag something important since you just quit last week - you need to act fast on a few things. First, file your initial claim on UI Online at edd.ca.gov ASAP. Second, start documenting your reasons for quitting in detail right now. Third, when you file they'll ask why you left and you should select 'quit' and then explain the circumstances fully. Don't try to frame it as something it wasn't - California EDD will contact your former employer and if the stories don't match that's a major red flag. Also one thing people don't know: California has something called 'constructive discharge' which is when the working conditions were so bad that a reasonable person would have felt forced to quit even without being technically fired. That's a real legal concept California EDD recognizes.

Oliver Fischer
AuthorConstructive discharge - that sounds like exactly what happened to me. How do I claim that specifically?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
In your initial claim and any follow-up statements, describe the specific conditions in detail and explain why you felt you had no other reasonable choice but to leave. You're essentially arguing you were forced out even though it was technically voluntary. Be thorough and factual.

constructive discharge is legit but California EDD sets a high bar for it. you really need documented incidents not just a general bad vibe situation

Honestly dealing with California EDD after a quit situation is FRUSTRATING because you almost certainly will end up in adjudication and trying to get anyone on the phone to explain what's happening or what additional info they need is nearly impossible. I spent weeks trying to reach someone when my claim was stuck. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically gets you through to an actual California EDD agent when you can't get through by calling yourself. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. I was skeptical but it actually worked and I was able to talk to someone who walked me through exactly what documentation they needed for my good cause determination. Saved me so much time and stress.

AuthorWait does that actually work? I've been trying to call EDD for two days and can't get through to anyone.

Worked for me! I was able to actually speak to a real agent who looked at my claim and told me specifically what was missing. Way better than just waiting and guessing.

can i ask what industry you were in? i've noticed some fields have better luck with these claims than others but maybe that's just my imagination

Oliver Fischer
AuthorRetail management. 4 years at the same company and they basically restructured my whole team and gave me an impossible situation.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
restructuring that makes your job significantly harder or changes your role substantially can actually be grounds for a good cause quit claim. that might be another angle to mention in your statement
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
Yes this is a real thing - if your employer materially changed your job duties, hours, pay, or working conditions without your agreement, that can constitute good cause even if they didn't technically fire you.

My two cents after going through the California EDD process twice now: the adjudication interview is make or break. They'll call you (usually from a blocked number so ANSWER EVERY UNKNOWN CALL) and ask you detailed questions about why you left. Be calm, be specific, stick to facts not emotions. Don't say 'the vibe was bad' - say 'on March 15th my manager said X in front of coworkers Y and Z.' Specific incidents with dates and witnesses are what win these cases.

Oliver Fischer
AuthorAnswer every unknown call - noted!! I would have missed that call for sure.

SO many people miss it and then have to reschedule which adds weeks to the process. Put a note on your phone right now.

they also sometimes text you now to schedule a callback time so check your texts too. check the email you registered with too

wait so if i quit because my commute got way longer due to an office relocation does that count as good cause? asking for a situation lol
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
Actually yes - a significant increase in commute distance/time due to employer relocation can qualify as good cause in California. The general standard is something like an unreasonably long commute that a reasonable person wouldn't be expected to tolerate.
0 coins
CosmicCadet
wait seriously?? I quit 6 weeks ago for exactly this reason and didn't even bother filing because I thought I had no chance
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
File immediately. There's a deadline (generally you have to file within a certain window) and you may still be within it. Explain the relocation situation clearly. Don't assume you don't qualify - let California EDD make that determination.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned: after you file your claim and it goes into adjudication for a voluntary quit, California EDD will send you a questionnaire called the DE 1080CZ (or sometimes they interview you by phone). This is your formal opportunity to make your case. Take it seriously - write out your answer before you call or fill out the form, make it detailed and organized. This document is essentially your evidence submission.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
AuthorIs that the only documentation I can submit or can I attach things like emails?
0 coins
Javier Morales
You can reference documents and the interviewer may ask you to submit them. Keep everything organized and ready. Emails, texts, performance reviews, anything that supports your narrative.

I submitted screenshots of texts from my manager along with my statement and I think that's what got me approved honestly

ngl the whole good cause thing feels like a lottery. I know people with really strong cases who got denied and people with weaker cases who got approved. California EDD is just inconsistent
0 coins
Isabella Silva
It's not purely a lottery but adjudicator discretion is real. Which is why documentation and clear communication matter so much - you're trying to make it as hard as possible for them to deny you.
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
This is also why being able to actually TALK to someone at California EDD matters so much. When I used Claimyr and finally got through, the agent gave me specific feedback on what my case was missing. That kind of direct information is invaluable when the process feels random.

Freya Andersen
fair point. going in blind is way worse than having actual info about where your claim stands
0 coins
Omar Farouk
question - if you get denied after quitting can you appeal? or is that it?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
Absolutely you can appeal. You have 30 days from the mailing date on the denial notice to file an appeal. The appeal goes to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB) and you get an actual hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. Many people who get initially denied win on appeal, especially if they have documentation they didn't present the first time around.
0 coins
Omar Farouk
30 days is not a lot of time. what if you miss it?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
Missing the appeal deadline is very serious - you generally lose your right to appeal that decision. If you have a denial notice, don't sit on it. File the appeal immediately even if you're still gathering information.

I got approved after quitting due to a hostile supervisor situation about 8 months ago. What made the difference for my claim: 1. I had tried to resolve the issue internally first (complained to HR) before quitting - this shows California EDD you didn't just bail without attempting to fix the problem 2. I had a paper trail of my HR complaints 3. I gave specific dates and descriptions, not vague complaints 4. I was honest that I quit voluntarily but explained the conditions The 'exhausted reasonable alternatives' thing is huge. California EDD wants to see you tried to fix the situation before walking out.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
AuthorI didn't go to HR before quitting because I didn't trust HR to do anything. Is that going to hurt me?
0 coins
Chloe Harris
It might complicate things but it's not automatically disqualifying. You can explain WHY you didn't go to HR - if HR was part of the problem, or you had reason to believe it would be futile, explain that. Context matters.
0 coins
Javier Morales
This is a good point. 'I had previously observed HR dismiss complaints from other employees' or 'my manager was personal friends with the HR director' - these are legitimate reasons that an adjudicator can consider.

Updating my earlier comment - I also want to mention that when you're in adjudication for a quit claim, the wait times can stretch to 6-10 weeks sometimes. During that whole time you MUST keep filing your weekly certifications every week. Miss one week and you may not be able to get that week added back later. Set a recurring reminder on your phone for whatever day you need to certify.
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
AuthorWhat day do I need to certify? I literally just filed my initial claim yesterday.
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
Your certification period will be shown in your UI Online account. Usually it's a specific day range each week - California EDD will show you when your next certification is due. Check your account after your claim is processed.

GalaxyGlider
also make sure your contact info is current in your UI Online profile. California EDD will text AND email you about your claim status and adjudication appointments

does quitting for health reasons work? like if the job was causing severe anxiety and your doctor can document it
0 coins
Malik Robinson
Yes - quitting due to medical reasons, including mental health conditions, can qualify as good cause in California. You'd need a doctor's statement confirming the medical condition and ideally connecting it to the work conditions. If your employer was aware of the condition and failed to accommodate it, that strengthens the claim significantly.
0 coins
Anastasia Popova
what if i didn't tell my employer about the anxiety before quitting
0 coins
Malik Robinson
That's harder but not impossible. A doctor's documentation after the fact can still help, but ideally you'd have some record that the job was affecting your health. If your doctor has been treating you for work-related stress/anxiety the records would show timeline.

BEEN THERE. my claim after quitting took forever and the california edd phone system is A JOKE. like genuinely designed to make you give up. endless hold, then disconnect. hold again, disconnect. tried for literally 2 weeks straight

Ravi Choudhury
Ugh yes the phone situation is brutal. That's exactly when I found Claimyr - I'd been trying to call California EDD for two weeks and getting nowhere. Went to claimyr.com and watched the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 and figured I had nothing to lose. Finally got through to an actual agent who could see my account and explain what was happening with my adjudication.

does it work for adjudication questions specifically? that's what I needed to know about and nobody could ever tell me anything
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
Yes exactly that. The agent I spoke to could see my claim file and told me specifically what documentation they were waiting for. That's the kind of info you just can't get from any automated system.

small thing but - when you file make sure you put your quit date correctly. i put the wrong date on my initial claim and it caused a whole extra verification process that added 3 weeks to my adjudication. double check everything before submitting
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
AuthorOh wow good catch. What counts as the quit date exactly - the day I told them or my last day worked?
0 coins
Zara Shah
last day worked is typically what California EDD uses as the separation date. but honestly double check with them because some situations are different
0 coins
Javier Morales
Generally it's the last day you actually performed work. If you gave notice and they let you go early, it could be the day they ended your employment. When in doubt, be transparent and explain the timeline - let EDD sort out the official date.

my sister went through this and she said the most important thing is to not bad mouth your employer during the adjudication call. like stay factual and professional even if they were terrible. apparently getting emotional or going on rants can hurt your credibility with the interviewer
0 coins
Isabella Silva
100% this. I've heard the same from people who've been through it multiple times. The interviewer is not your therapist - they're collecting facts to make a determination. Stick to specific factual statements.
0 coins
NebulaNomad
she also said to never say you 'just couldn't take it anymore' because that sounds like a personal tolerance issue not an objective good cause situation
0 coins
Chloe Harris
Great point. Instead of 'I couldn't take it anymore' say 'the working conditions had become objectively unreasonable because of X specific ongoing issues that I had documented and attempted to address.' Same feeling, totally different framing for the adjudicator.

has anyone dealt with an employer who lies to california edd during the adjudication? like what happens if they tell a totally different story
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
This is unfortunately common. California EDD will weigh both accounts and whoever has better documentation typically wins. This is exactly why written evidence (emails, texts, HR complaints) is so valuable - it's harder for an employer to contradict a timestamped email than a verbal account.
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
what if its just my word against theirs with no documentation
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
Witnesses who were present for incidents can provide statements. Also your own consistent detailed account matters - if your story has specific dates/details and their denial is vague, adjudicators notice that. Not guaranteed but specificity helps.
0 coins
Isabella Silva
Also if you have former coworkers who experienced similar treatment or witnessed your situation, ask if they'd be willing to provide a statement. Third party corroboration is powerful.

tbh even if you dont get approved right away the appeal process has worked out for a lot of people i know. don't give up after a first denial. the appeals board hearings are more formal and you actually get to present your case in front of a judge which is scarier but also more fair than just a phone questionnaire
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
AuthorHow long does the appeal process take after a denial?
0 coins
Nia Wilson
from what i've heard like 3-6 months for the hearing to be scheduled, sometimes longer. its not fast. but if you have a real case it's worth pursuing
0 coins
Malik Robinson
This is accurate. The CUIAB appeals process is slower but more thorough. If your initial claim was denied partly due to lack of documentation, you can present that documentation at the hearing. Many claimants are better prepared for appeals than for the initial adjudication.

OP I just want to give you some hope - I quit a retail management job about 14 months ago after my company restructured my entire team and made my job unworkable. Went into adjudication for 7 weeks. Was terrified the whole time. GOT APPROVED. The backpay hit my EDD debit card all at once and I honestly cried. You have a real case. Document everything, keep certifying every week, answer every phone call from unknown numbers, and be patient. It's stressful but the system does work sometimes.
