How much does job attached unemployment pay through California EDD?
So I just got temporarily laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant - my supervisor told me I'm 'job attached' which apparently means they plan to bring me back once the slow season ends. I've never filed for unemployment benefits before and honestly have no idea what to expect. I went ahead and filed my claim through UI Online but now I'm trying to figure out how much does job attached unemployment pay compared to regular unemployment? Does the calculation work differently because I'm expected to return? My last paycheck was about $1,150 per week before taxes so I'm trying to plan my budget while I'm out. I also heard something about standby status - is that the same thing as being job attached or is that a completely different thing? Really stressed out about making ends meet and would appreciate any info from people who have been through this.

Job attached unemployment in California pays the same as regular UI - the 'job attached' status doesn't change your weekly benefit amount at all. Your WBA (weekly benefit amount) is calculated based on your highest earning quarter during your base period. For most people that's roughly 60-70% of your previous weekly wages up to the state maximum. In 2025 the max WBA in California is $450 per week. With your wages around $1,150/week you'd probably land right around that maximum or close to it. The main difference with job attached status is that California EDD may approve you for standby status which means you don't have to do the usual 3 job search contacts per week while you're waiting to go back.

AuthorOh wow that's really helpful thank you. So standby status is connected to being job attached? I didn't realize those two things were related. Does my employer have to do something on their end to make that happen?

Yes your employer typically needs to confirm the temporary layoff and expected return date. California EDD will verify the job attachment. If approved for standby you skip the job search requirement which is a big deal for people who know they're going back.

the max WBA for 2025 is actually higher than $450, I thought they raised it? not 100% sure tho

I went through this exact situation about 8 months ago - temporary layoff from my warehouse job and I was job attached the whole time. My weekly benefit amount came out to $412 which wasn't amazing but covered my basics. One thing that caught me off guard: you still have to certify every two weeks through UI Online even on standby. Don't skip a certification period or you could have issues with your claim!

AuthorGood to know about certifying! Is there anything specific I need to answer differently when certifying since I'm job attached vs regular unemployed?

When they ask if you were able and available to work, say yes. And if your employer calls you back even for one day of work that week, you have to report those earnings. Partial week earnings get calculated and reduce your benefit for that week but don't disqualify you.

This happened to me too and I also panicked about the certification questions lol. Just answer honestly and you'll be fine.

Something worth knowing - figuring out exactly how much you'll get paid can be confusing because the base period calculation isn't always obvious. California EDD looks at your earnings during a specific 12-month window that ends about 5-6 months before you filed. So your most recent paychecks might not even count. If you want a clearer picture fast, I'd honestly suggest calling California EDD directly to get your claim details explained. I know getting through to them is a nightmare though. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I needed answers about my benefit calculation - they basically get you connected to a live EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Got my questions answered the same day.

Worked for me - I was skeptical too but I needed to understand why my benefit amount seemed lower than expected and couldn't get through any other way. An actual agent walked me through my base period earnings and it made sense after that.

To give you a ballpark on the math for how much does job attached unemployment pay - California EDD takes your highest quarter earnings in the base period and divides by 26. So if you earned say $14,000 in your best quarter that would be about $538/week but it gets capped at the maximum. Since you mentioned $1,150/week you'd be earning around $14,950 per quarter if consistent, which would put you right at or near the max WBA. The job-attached part just affects your requirements not the payment amount itself.

Fernanda Marquez
AuthorThat formula makes sense! So basically I just need to know what my highest quarter earnings were. I can probably figure that out from my pay stubs.

Exactly. Or log into your UI Online account - once your claim is processed it should show your computed WBA and the base period quarters they used. Takes some of the guesswork out.

wait they divide by 26?? i thought it was based on like a percentage of weekly wages. either way the max is what it is i guess

JUST A WARNING - I got approved for standby as a job attached employee and thought everything was fine. Then my company pushed back my return date twice and California EDD eventually said my standby approval was only for the original period. I had to start doing job search activities AND still hoped to go back to my original job. It was such a mess. Make sure you know the exact dates your standby covers and what happens if your employer extends the layoff!!
0 coins
Fernanda Marquez
AuthorOh this is really scary to think about. What did you have to do when the standby period expired? Did you have to submit job search stuff retroactively?
0 coins
Lukas Fitzgerald
No retroactive stuff thankfully but I had to scramble to log contacts going forward. My employer did eventually bring me back but the uncertainty was stressful. Just stay on top of your claim status and any notices California EDD sends.

Kendrick Webb
This is an important point. Standby status is approved for a specific duration, usually matching the employer's stated return date. Any extension needs to be re-requested and approved by EDD separately.

honestly just glad to see other people going through similar things. i was laid off job attached back in the fall and the whole time i kept second guessing whether i was doing everything right. the california edd website has some good info but its also kind of confusing to navigate

To directly answer how much does job attached unemployment pay in practical terms for 2025 - the weekly benefit amount range in California is $40 minimum to $450 maximum per week. Most full-time workers end up somewhere in the $200-$450 range. Benefits are paid every two weeks after you certify. So in a month you'd typically receive two payments. Your actual deposits usually hit your Bank of America EDD debit card or your designated bank account within a few days of certification approval.
0 coins
Fernanda Marquez
AuthorSo they still send the EDD debit card? I wasn't sure if that was still how they paid. Should I expect a card in the mail?
0 coins
Norman Fraser
Yes Bank of America EDD debit card is still the default unless you set up direct deposit in your UI Online account. I'd recommend setting up direct deposit - funds come faster and you don't have to worry about the physical card getting lost in the mail.

Direct deposit is way better definitely do that. My first claim I used the card and it was such a hassle when I needed to access funds.

Came here searching for the same question - how much does job attached unemployment pay - because I'm also temporarily laid off and my employer said I should be back in about 6 weeks. Reading this thread has been super helpful actually. Didn't know about standby exempting you from job search requirements. That's a huge relief since I definitely plan to go back.

Make sure you ask California EDD specifically about standby when you file or call in. It's not automatic - you or your employer needs to establish the job attachment and request the standby status. Don't assume it'll be applied to your claim.
0 coins
Jungleboo Soletrain
Good to know, I'll make sure to ask specifically. Do I request it in UI Online or does it have to be over the phone?
0 coins
Kendrick Webb
You can note it during your initial claim filing in UI Online. There's a section about your separation reason - select temporary layoff and it should prompt questions about expected return date. That starts the standby process.

my brother in law got job attached unemployment last year and his payments were like $380/week which he said was way less than he expected. he made decent money at his job too. turns out a bunch of overtime he worked wasnt counted right in the base period or something like that. idk the details but just saying the amount might be different from what you calculate yourself
0 coins
Rajan Walker
Overtime IS counted in your earnings but the base period timing can absolutely cause surprises. If your highest earning period falls outside the standard base period, you might qualify for an alternate base period calculation which uses more recent quarters. Worth asking California EDD about if your benefit amount seems off.

Hattie Carson
yeah that sounds like what happened to him. he never ended up appealing it or anything just accepted the lower amount. probably should have looked into it more

AuthorGood thing to be aware of - I'll definitely double check my benefit amount when it posts and ask questions if something seems off.

I tried for a solid week to get someone at California EDD on the phone to ask about my job attached claim status and benefit amount. Kept getting busy signals or that automated message saying to call back later. Finally a friend told me about Claimyr - went to claimyr.com and watched the video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 and figured why not. Got connected to an actual EDD agent and asked all my questions in one call. The agent confirmed my standby status was approved and explained my WBA. Honestly saved me so much frustration.

Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical but desperate at that point. If you have specific questions about your claim amount or standby status an actual agent is the only one who can really give you answers for your specific situation.

From what I can tell it's just for getting connected to a California EDD phone agent - once you're connected you can ask whatever you need. The agent I got was actually helpful and patient.

not to derail but this thread is making me realize i might have done my own claim wrong?? I was also job attached but i never requested standby and have been submitting job search activities every week for like 2 months. is it too late to change that?

You should contact California EDD as soon as possible if you believe you qualify for standby status. There's no guarantee they'll backdate it but it's worth asking. Your employer will still need to confirm the temporary nature of the layoff and expected return date.

Same thing happened to a coworker of mine - she did job search activities the whole time and found out later she was eligible for standby. EDD didn't retroactively remove the requirement but going forward she was approved. Better late than never.

One more thing about payment amounts that I don't see mentioned yet - your job attached unemployment benefits are taxable income. California doesn't tax UI benefits at the state level but the federal government does. California EDD will send you a 1099-G at the end of the year. You can also choose to have 10% withheld for federal taxes right from your payments if you want to avoid a surprise tax bill. You can elect this in your UI Online account settings.
0 coins
Fernanda Marquez
AuthorI had no idea about the federal taxes! That's really important. I'll set up the withholding now before I forget.
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
Smart move. A lot of people find out the hard way in April when they owe federal taxes on benefits they spent. 10% withholding isn't required but it's a good idea especially if you're getting close to the max WBA.

Nadia Zaldivar
california not taxing it is nice at least. one less thing to worry about

Going back to the original question about how much does job attached unemployment pay - I want to make sure you also know about partial week benefits. If your employer calls you back for one or two days during your layoff period (which happens sometimes with job attached situations), you still report those earnings when you certify. California EDD uses a formula where you keep $25 or 25% of your WBA (whichever is higher) as a disregard, and then they deduct the rest of your earnings from your weekly benefit. So you're not completely cut off if you work a partial week.
0 coins
Fernanda Marquez
AuthorOh this is really good to know because my supervisor mentioned they might need me for a day here or there before the full return. So I can still collect partial benefits those weeks?
0 coins
Destiny Bryant
Yes exactly. Just make sure you report every dollar accurately. Underreporting earnings to California EDD is a serious issue and can lead to overpayment notices and penalties. Not worth it.

the partial week thing tripped me up at first too. the UI online certification questions are pretty clear about it though once you get used to them

Has anyone dealt with their claim going into adjudication even when they're job attached? Mine has been in adjudication for almost two weeks and I have no idea why. I reported the layoff accurately and my employer confirmed it was temporary. Getting really anxious because no payments have come through yet.
0 coins
Norman Fraser
Adjudication on a job attached claim usually means California EDD is verifying the circumstances of your separation with your employer. It's common even on straightforward temporary layoffs. Unfortunately it does delay payments but once resolved it's usually backdated to your claim start date.
0 coins
Anna Xian
ok that's reassuring about the backdating. so i should just wait it out? or is there something i should be doing?
0 coins
Kendrick Webb
Check your UI Online account for any notices or requests for information. Sometimes adjudication is triggered because EDD needs a response from you - like a questionnaire about your separation. If there's nothing pending on your end, it may just be the employer verification process running its course.

Anna Xian
I checked and there's nothing pending from my side. I'll wait a bit more but if it drags past 3 weeks I might try calling them again.

quick question since this thread is so helpful - if you're job attached and on standby do you still have to register with CalJOBS? i remember reading something about that requirement but wasnt sure if standby exempts you from that too
0 coins
Kendrick Webb
Great question. You still need to register with CalJOBS as part of your initial claim requirements even if you're on standby. The standby status exempts you from the ongoing job search activity requirement (3 contacts per week) but the CalJOBS registration itself is a one-time setup requirement for all UI claimants.
0 coins
Avery Davis
ok thanks for clarifying that. I hadn't done it yet and was worried
0 coins
Norman Fraser
Complete the CalJOBS registration early in your claim - it's one of those things that can hold up your payments if it's flagged as incomplete. Shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes.

I want to circle back to something important for OP and anyone else reading: the question of how much does job attached unemployment pay also depends on when during the year your layoff happens relative to your base period. California EDD uses what's called the standard base period which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. If you were highly paid in the most recent quarter but it falls outside the standard base period, your WBA could be lower than expected. In that case request the alternate base period calculation which uses the most recent four quarters instead.
0 coins
Fernanda Marquez
AuthorThis is getting complicated lol. I should probably just ask California EDD to walk me through my specific base period calculation to make sure I'm getting the right amount.
0 coins
Rajan Walker
That's honestly the best approach. Your UI Online account shows the base period quarters and wages on file but a California EDD agent can explain if an alternate calculation would benefit you.

Jungleboo Soletrain
Didn't know alternate base period was even an option. Definitely going to ask about this for my claim too.

Reading all these replies and feeling like I want to add - the stress of not knowing how much money is coming or when it's coming is genuinely awful. When I was in this situation I spent way too much time trying to reach California EDD and getting nowhere. A coworker eventually pointed me to Claimyr and I was like why didn't I find this earlier. You go to claimyr.com and they handle the hold time so you can actually talk to someone. My call connected and I finally got the payment timeline info I needed. Wish I'd known about it from day one.

To summarize everything in this thread for anyone finding it later with the same question about how much does job attached unemployment pay in California: Your WBA is 60-70% of your prior weekly wages up to the current maximum (check EDD.ca.gov for the current cap as it can adjust). Job-attached status does not change your payment amount but may qualify you for standby status which removes the weekly job search requirement. You still certify every two weeks, still need CalJOBS registration, and still report any partial week earnings. Benefits are not taxed by California but are federally taxable and you can elect 10% federal withholding through UI Online. If your claim is in adjudication, check for pending notices and allow time for employer verification.
