EDD phone nightmare - called right at 8am but still can't reach anyone after 6 hours

I'm so frustrated I could scream! My claim status switched to 'pending' yesterday after I submitted my bi-weekly certification. I set THREE alarms to make sure I'd be ready to call EDD the minute they opened this morning. Literally dialed at 7:59:50 am so I'd get through right at 8:00. Guess what? 'We're experiencing higher than normal call volume. Please try again later.' CLICK. I've called 27 times today (yes, I've been counting). Every single time: same automated message, then disconnected. It's now 2pm and I'm starting to panic. I can't afford to have my payments delayed - rent is due next week and I'm already behind on utilities. Is anyone else having this problem TODAY specifically? Any tricks to getting through? This is my first time having an issue since I started claiming in January and I'm completely lost.

Welcome to EDD hell 👹 Been through this exact nightmare 3 times in the past 6 months. The 8am rush is actually the WORST time to call because literally everyone tries then. Try calling at weird times - I've had better luck around 10:30am or 2:45pm. Also, when you hear the first automated menu, press 1-2-4 instead of following the prompts for claims questions. Sometimes that route has shorter queues.

Trying the 1-2-4 trick right now! Will report back if it works. I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

It's frustrating, but unfortunately pretty normal. What's probably happened is your certification triggered an eligibility issue that needs manual review. When claims go to 'pending' from 'paid' status, it typically means something flagged in the system. A few things that might help: 1. Check your UI Online account for any messages or tasks in your inbox 2. Look under 'History' to see if there's any clue about what triggered the pending status 3. Did you report any earnings or answer any questions differently this time? The phone situation is tough, but keep trying different times throughout the day. Sometimes mid-afternoon has slightly better luck.

Thanks for the detailed response! I checked my UI Online and there's nothing in my inbox or history that explains the pending status. I didn't report any earnings (still unemployed) and answered everything the same as always. That's what's so frustrating - there's no indication of what the problem might be. I'll try calling again around 3:30pm.

Same. My last pending issue fixed itself after a week with no action on my part. EDD systems are just slow sometimes.

I went through this exact situation last month and found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to EDD after days of failed calls. It basically automates the calling process and notifies you when it gets through to a real person. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I was skeptical at first but it worked really well for me. The rep I spoke with was able to immediately fix my pending payment issue - turned out there was a random quarterly income review flag on my account that needed to be cleared.

Never heard of this before but I'll check it out. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything! Did they explain why your payment was pending when you finally got through?

Yeah, the EDD rep told me it was a standard quarterly review flag that happens automatically for some claims. Nothing I did wrong - just needed a human to review and approve it. Took the agent about 2 minutes to fix once I actually got through. Hope you get it resolved quickly!

The EDD phone system is COMPLETELY BROKEN and has been for YEARS!!! They know exactly how many claims are in the system, how many staff they have, and how many calls they get - yet they REFUSE to fix the call center situation!!! I had to call 143 TIMES over 3 DAYS to get through last month. It's INSANE that we have to go through this in 2025!!!! They should be ASHAMED of how they treat people who are already struggling!!!! 😡😡😡

143 times?! That's insane! Did you just keep hitting redial for hours? I'm already at 34 calls today and feeling completely defeated.

YES!!! I literally had one phone dedicated JUST to calling EDD while I used my other phone for everything else. Hit redial, get rejected, repeat FOR HOURS each day. When I finally got through, the agent fixed my problem in UNDER 5 MINUTES!!! That's what makes me so FURIOUS - the actual help was quick and easy, but they make it IMPOSSIBLE to access that help!!!!

have u tried using the contact us form on ui online? sometimes they respond to those in a day or 2. better than phone imo

The Contact Us form works for simple questions, but unfortunately it rarely resolves pending payment issues. Those almost always require speaking with a tier 2 claims specialist who can actually make changes to the claim status in the system. The Contact Us responses usually just advise calling in for payment issues.

My certification went pending last Sunday and changed to paid yesterday without me doing anything. Sometimes the system just takes a few days to process everything, especially at month-end when they're probably running a bunch of automated reviews. Maybe give it another day before stressing too much?

That gives me a little hope! Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll fix itself. But I'm still going to keep trying to call just in case. Can't afford to wait if there's actually a problem that needs fixing.

Quick update for anyone following this thread: Starting last month, EDD implemented a new pending review process that automatically flags some certifications for a brief manual review. These typically resolve within 3-5 business days without any action required. However, if your payment history has been consistent and suddenly changes to pending, it's still worth trying to contact them as it could indicate a more specific issue with your claim.

UPDATE: I got through!!! Used the Claimyr service someone recommended above and had a callback within 30 minutes. The EDD rep said my account had a random quarterly review flag (exactly like someone else mentioned). She removed the flag and my payment is being processed now! Should have the money in 24-48 hours. Such a relief!
