EDD benefit year ending soon - will extension happen automatically?

So my benefit year is ending in July 2025 and I'm super confused about what happens next. I already used up all my available benefits back in February (ran through my full claim amount). When I called EDD last week, the rep told me NOT to file a new claim and said my current claim would automatically renew. But I've been reading conflicting info online about this! Can anyone who's been through this recently confirm if this is true? Do I really just wait for the system to automatically renew my claim when my benefit year ends, or should I be proactive and file a new claim anyway? I'm worried about having a gap in benefits if I need them again after July. Has the process changed? I keep seeing older posts saying you HAVE to file a new claim when your benefit year ends. So confused right now!

I went through this exact situation in January. The rep is right - if you've exhausted your benefits but your benefit year hasn't ended yet, you DON'T file a new claim. You have to wait until your benefit year actually expires in July. Once July hits, THEN you can file a new claim if you need benefits again. But there's nothing that happens "automatically" - you'll definitely need to file a new claim once your benefit year ends if you want to receive more benefits. The EDD rep probably meant you shouldn't file a new claim right now while your current benefit year is still active, even though you've used up all your benefits.

Thanks for clarifying! So basically I can't do anything until July, and then I need to file a brand new claim? I was really confused by what the rep told me about things "renewing automatically." Good to know I'll need to be proactive when July comes.

ur supposed to file a new claim after benefit year ends. not before. thats prob what they meant. nothing renews automatically w/ EDD lol

The information you received is partially correct but needs clarification. When your benefit year ends in July 2025, you will need to file a new claim if you want to continue receiving benefits. Nothing renews automatically in the EDD system. However, the representative was correct in telling you NOT to file a new claim now. You must wait until your current benefit year expires (July 2025) before filing a new claim. Filing early would just result in a denial. To be eligible for a new claim after your benefit year ends, you'll need to have earned wages during your current benefit year. The minimum earnings requirement is typically around $1,300 in your highest-earning quarter during your base period. If you haven't earned enough qualifying wages during your current benefit year, you may not be eligible for a new claim when your benefit year ends in July 2025.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! I did work for about 4 months during this benefit year so hopefully that's enough to qualify. Just to be 100% clear - I should mark my calendar for July 2025 and file a new claim then, right? Nothing happens automatically?

I had this same problem last year and waited for the automatic renewal that NEVER HAPPENED!! wasted like 6 weeks with no money because I listened to them saying it would renew itself. DONT BELIEVE IT! File new claim the day after your benefit year ends!!!!!

I tried calling EDD last month about this exact question and couldn't get through to anyone. Kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it would hang up on me. Super frustrating. I finally tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep and it actually worked! They have this system that calls EDD for you and then connects you once they get through. Saved me hours of redial hell. There's a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with confirmed what others here are saying - you have to file a new claim after your benefit year ends, nothing happens automatically. Just marking my calendar now to file a new claim on day one.

does that service actually work?? im so tired of calling EDD 50+ times and never getting through

Yeah it worked for me! Got through to someone in about 25 minutes instead of wasting my whole day hitting redial.

To clarify the process for everyone: 1) If you've exhausted benefits BUT your benefit year hasn't ended yet: You simply wait until your benefit year ends. There's nothing to do now. 2) When your benefit year ends: You must file a completely new claim. Nothing renews automatically. 3) Eligibility for new claim: You need qualifying wages during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before filing). 4) Timing: File your new claim immediately after your benefit year ends to avoid payment gaps. The confusion might be because during the pandemic, there were special extension programs where benefits could continue beyond the normal limits, but those programs have ended. Under current regular UI rules, nothing extends or renews automatically. Hope this helps clear things up for everyone in this situation!

This is super helpful - thank you! I'm going to set a reminder for the first day after my benefit year ends to file that new claim. Really appreciate everyone's help clarifying this.

I went thru something similar back in January and was totally confused too. The EDD phone reps sometimes give conflicting info! My experience: My benefit year ended Jan 15th and I had used all my benefits already. I filed a new claim on Jan 16th, had to do the ID.me verification again, and then had to do a phone interview because I had some part-time work during my previous claim period. The whole process took about 3 weeks before I started getting benefits again. So definitely file a new claim right when your benefit year ends! And be prepared for possible delays with the new claim processing.

btw make sure u have all ur work history for the last 18 months ready when u file the new claim. they ask for ALL employers even part time stuff

One more thing to consider - if you're currently working part-time, make sure you're reporting those earnings correctly on your weekly certifications. This won't affect your benefit year end date, but it will affect your eligibility for a new claim when you do file in July 2025. Also, the minimum earnings requirement for a new claim changes slightly each year, but it's typically around $1,300 in your highest-earning quarter during your base period, with total base period earnings of at least $1,800.

Just wanted to add my recent experience to help clarify things! I was in almost the exact same situation as you - my benefit year ended in February 2025 and I had exhausted all my benefits back in December 2024. I waited until the day after my benefit year ended and filed a brand new claim online. The process was pretty straightforward, but I did have to provide updated employment information for the past 18 months (like others mentioned). One thing that caught me off guard was that I had to do a brief phone interview about 2 weeks after filing because I had some freelance work during my previous claim period. The interview only took about 15 minutes and they just wanted to verify the dates and earnings I reported. My new claim was approved and I started receiving benefits about 3 weeks after filing. So definitely don't wait for anything "automatic" - you'll need to be proactive and file that new claim right when your benefit year ends in July! The key thing is having qualifying wages during your base period. Since you mentioned working for 4 months during your current benefit year, you should be good to go. Just make sure you have all your employment records ready when you file.

Thanks for sharing your recent experience! That's really helpful to know the timeline - 3 weeks from filing to getting benefits seems pretty standard based on what others have shared. The phone interview part is good to know about too, since I did have some part-time work during my current benefit year. I'll make sure to have all my employment records organized and ready to go when July rolls around. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain this process!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! My benefit year ends in June 2025 and I exhausted my benefits in January. I called EDD three times and got three different answers from different reps - one said it would automatically renew, another said I need to file a new claim immediately, and the third said to wait until my benefit year ends. Based on everyone's responses here, it sounds like the third rep was correct. I'm going to set a calendar reminder for the day after my benefit year ends to file a new claim. It's frustrating how inconsistent the information is from EDD phone reps! One question for those who've been through this recently - did you have to do the whole ID.me verification process again when you filed your new claim? I'm hoping to avoid that hassle if possible.

I can relate to getting different answers from EDD reps - it's so frustrating! From what I've been reading here, you're right that the third rep gave you the correct info. Regarding ID.me verification, I actually had to go through it again when I filed my new claim last year. It wasn't as bad as the first time though - the process was faster and I didn't have to wait weeks like I did initially. I think they may have streamlined it since the early pandemic days. Just be prepared to potentially do it again and maybe set aside some extra time when you file your new claim in June. The calendar reminder is a great idea! I'm doing the same thing for when my benefit year ends. Better to be proactive than wait around for something that won't happen automatically.

I'm actually dealing with this same situation right now and all the responses here have been super helpful! My benefit year ends in August 2025 and I exhausted my benefits back in March. After reading through everyone's experiences, it's crystal clear that nothing happens automatically with EDD - you definitely need to file a new claim right after your benefit year ends. I was also told conflicting things by different EDD reps, so it's really reassuring to hear from people who've actually been through this process recently. I'm going to follow everyone's advice and set a calendar reminder for the day after my benefit year ends to file that new claim. Also going to start gathering all my employment records now so I'm prepared - sounds like having everything organized beforehand makes the process smoother. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, especially those who mentioned the timeline (3 weeks seems typical) and potential phone interviews. This thread should be bookmarked for anyone going through this confusing situation!
