Can I collect EDD benefits for reduced hospital hours while still working part-time at In-N-Out?
I'm in a weird situation with my jobs and not sure if I qualify for unemployment. I work as a nursing assistant at Memorial Hospital (24 hours/week normally) but they just cut my hours to ZERO because of budget issues. My supervisor told me to apply for EDD, but here's my concern - I also have a second job at In-N-Out where I work maybe 3-6 hours per week (just 1-2 shifts). Do I qualify for unemployment from my hospital job even though I still have my fast food job? Or do I need to quit In-N-Out completely to get any benefits? I'm really confused about how partial unemployment works. The hospital hours were my main income and I can't pay rent with just the In-N-Out money. Any advice?

Yes, you absolutely can and should apply for unemployment for your reduced hospital hours! You don't need to quit your In-N-Out job. This is called partial unemployment and it's very common. When you certify every two weeks, you'll report your In-N-Out earnings, and EDD will reduce your weekly benefit amount accordingly, but you'll still get something for the lost hospital income. Make sure when you file your claim, you list both employers. Then during certification, accurately report your In-N-Out hours and wages each week. The system is designed for situations exactly like yours!

•Oh that's such a relief! Thank you! I was worried I'd have to choose between keeping my In-N-Out job or getting unemployment. When I file, should I list the hospital as my primary employer since that's where I lost hours?

You can definitely receive unemployment while working part-time at In-N-Out, but there are some important details to understand: 1. When you file, list both employers and their contact information 2. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) will be calculated based primarily on your hospital earnings since that's your higher-paying job 3. Each week during certification, report your In-N-Out earnings accurately 4. EDD uses a formula where they don't count the first $25 or 25% of your earnings (whichever is greater), then subtract the remainder from your WBA 5. Make sure to answer "yes" to the question about whether you worked, and report the exact hours and gross pay You might find that even with your In-N-Out income, you still receive a significant partial unemployment payment due to the hospital job loss.

•This is so helpful! Can I ask - does OP need to submit any kind of proof from the hospital that their hours were cut to zero? Or just the normal application is enough?

•Great question. For the initial application, no special proof is needed - just accurately report the reduction in hours. EDD will automatically contact both employers to verify employment details. However, it's always good to keep documentation handy (emails, schedule changes, communication from supervisors) in case EDD requests more information later or if there's an eligibility interview scheduled to clarify the circumstances of the reduced hours.

EDD is SO BAD about explaining partial unemployment!! When I lost my full-time retail job but kept my weekend server gig, it took me FOREVER to get benefits because I didn't understand how to report properly. My advice: when you certify, report your exact In-N-Out hours and pay EACH WEEK separately (don't combine the two weeks). Also, KEEP DETAILED RECORDS of your In-N-Out shifts and pay - I got hit with an overpayment notice because my reporting didn't match what my employer reported. Also be prepared that EDD might schedule an eligibility interview to confirm the hospital actually reduced your hours and didn't fire you for misconduct or something. Good luck!

•Thanks for the warning - I'm definitely going to keep detailed records! Did your eligibility interview happen over the phone? I'm worried because my hospital HR department is notoriously slow to respond to anything.

•Yep, phone interview. They called exactly at the scheduled time (shocked me honestly lol). The interviewer mostly wanted to confirm I didn't voluntarily quit my main job. If your hospital is slow, maybe get something in writing from your supervisor now about the hours reduction? The more documentation you have the better!

i think ur wrong about this!!! my cousin got DENIED benefits because she had a second job. EDD told her she had to quit ALL jobs to get benefits. the system is rigged man, they make these rules impossible to understand ON PURPOSE so people give up trying

•That's actually not correct. Your cousin's situation was likely different or there was a misunderstanding. The EDD system explicitly allows for partial unemployment when hours are reduced at one job while maintaining another job. It's covered directly in their official materials. The key is reporting all earnings accurately during certification.

Have you tried calling EDD to ask them directly? I know getting through can be a nightmare but I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD agent in under 10 minutes after I struggled for weeks trying to call myself. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km An EDD agent can give you the definitive answer for your specific situation and help you set up your claim correctly from the start. Especially with two jobs involved, it's worth getting official guidance.

•I hadn't even thought about trying to call them! I've heard horror stories about the wait times. I'll check out that service, thank you. It would be nice to talk to someone official before I submit anything.

I'm in almost the exact same boat!!! I work at two places too - one cut my hours completely and at the other I still work like 10hrs a week. Applied for partial unemployment last week and got approved already! When you certify for benefits (every 2 weeks) you just report your In n Out income and they adjust your payment. Don't overcomplicate it - just apply!!

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! I'm going to apply today and make sure I list both employers. I'll keep detailed records of my In-N-Out hours and pay like suggested. I'm relieved to hear I don't have to quit my second job to get benefits for the hospital hours reduction. Hopefully the process goes smoothly but at least now I feel more prepared for what to expect!

•Good luck! Just remember to be 100% accurate when reporting your hours and earnings each week during certification. That's the most important thing to avoid problems later.
