Can I cancel my unemployment claim online with California EDD?
So I started a new job last week and realized I need to cancel my unemployment claim but I have no idea how to do this through the California EDD website. I logged into UI Online and poked around everywhere but can't find any obvious 'cancel claim' button or option anywhere. I'm kind of freaking out because I don't want to accidentally keep receiving benefits I'm not entitled to and end up with an overpayment situation down the road. Does anyone know if you can actually cancel a UI claim online or do I have to call California EDD directly? I already filed my most recent weekly claim before I started the job so I'm not sure if I need to report those wages on my next one or just stop filing altogether. Any help would be appreciated because the last thing I want is EDD coming after me for money I wasn't supposed to get.

You don't actually 'cancel' a claim through UI Online the same way you'd cancel a subscription or something. What you're supposed to do is just stop certifying for weekly benefits once you're back to work full time. California EDD will figure out you stopped filing and your claim just sits inactive. That said, for the week you already worked, you'll need to report those wages when you certify for that week - don't skip it or lie about hours worked.

AuthorWait so there's no actual cancel button anywhere? I kept looking for like a 'close my claim' option and couldn't find it. So I just... stop filing and that's it?

Yeah that's basically it. The claim just becomes inactive after a while if you stop certifying. You still have it available if you ever lose the new job within the benefit year though.

This is correct but I want to add something important - for the partial week when you started working, you MUST still certify and report your actual hours and earnings. Do NOT just skip that certification. If you skip it entirely EDD might flag it or you could lose the ability to certify for those days you were still technically unemployed before the new job started. Report everything accurately and let the system calculate what if anything you're owed.

AuthorMy job started Monday of last week so technically I was unemployed Sunday through Sunday the week before. Do I need to report just the new job wages for the week I started working?

Oliver Cheng
Yes exactly. When you certify for the week your job started, report the wages you earned that week from the new job. EDD will calculate if you're owed anything for the days before you started. After that week just stop certifying and you're done.

this is the right answer, i did the same thing when i got rehired last year. just report everything honestly and stop filing after that

I went through this exact situation a few months ago and spent like two days trying to figure out how to 'officially' end my claim before someone finally told me there's no formal cancellation process for claimants on the UI Online portal. BUT - and this is important - I did want to speak with an EDD rep just to confirm everything was handled correctly because I'd had some certification issues earlier in my claim. Getting through to someone at California EDD by phone is basically a nightmare as everyone here knows. A friend told me to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - it basically helps you actually get connected to an EDD agent instead of getting the busy signal or getting hung up on. I used it and got through in about an hour which honestly felt like a miracle compared to my previous attempts. Just wanted to mention it in case you want to confirm your claim status directly with EDD.

AuthorOh wow thanks for that. I might use that service just for peace of mind honestly. I really do want someone at EDD to tell me directly that my claim is closed out properly.

seconding Claimyr, used it when i had an overpayment question and actually got a human on the phone for the first time in months lol

is that legit? seems sketchy that you'd need a third party service just to call a government agency

To answer the original question more directly - no you cannot formally cancel a California EDD unemployment claim through UI Online. The system doesn't have that functionality for claimants. Your options are: 1) Simply stop filing weekly certifications once you're employed full time, 2) Call EDD and ask them to note your claim as inactive if you want confirmation on file, 3) If you want written documentation, you can send a message through UI Online's contact feature explaining you've returned to work. Option 1 is what most people do. Options 2 or 3 are for people who want a paper trail.

Finnegan Gunn
AuthorThe paper trail option actually appeals to me given how EDD works. Better to have documentation right?
0 coins
Felix Grigori
Honestly yes if you're the cautious type. Send a message through UI Online saying you returned to work on [date] and will no longer be certifying. That way there's a timestamp on record. It's not required but it's smart.

Felicity Bud
I never did this when I went back to work and had zero issues, just stopped certifying and that was that. But the paper trail advice isn't bad if you're worried about it.

wait i'm confused about something - does canceling or stopping your claim affect your benefit year? like if OP loses the new job in a few months can they still reopen this claim or would they have to file a completely new one?
0 coins
Felix Grigori
Great question actually. Your benefit year runs 12 months from your original filing date. If you're still within that benefit year and still have remaining benefit balance, you can reopen the existing claim rather than filing a new one. Just log into UI Online and select 'reopen claim' when the time comes. No need to start from scratch if it's within the same benefit year.

Max Reyes
ohhhh ok that makes way more sense. so it's better to NOT cancel it for real even if you could because you might need it later

Exactly this. Having an open but inactive claim is actually to your advantage. EDD doesn't penalize you for not certifying while you're working.

I had a coworker who just ghosted her EDD claim without doing the final certification where she reported her return-to-work wages and she ended up with an overpayment notice like 8 months later. EDD figured out she'd been working through wage matching with her employer's payroll records. So please do NOT just vanish without at least certifying for that transition week and reporting your earnings. The overpayment process is a massive headache you do not want.

AuthorThis is exactly what I was afraid of. How much was the overpayment for her?
0 coins
Adrian Connor
It wasn't huge - like a few hundred dollars - but the process of dealing with it, disputing part of it, and setting up a repayment plan took months and stressed her out way more than just reporting it honestly would have.

yeah EDD does wage crossmatch with employer records so they WILL find out eventually. always just report honestly

Aisha Jackson
This happened to a lot of people during past years. The overpayment notices can come out of nowhere and they charge penalties sometimes too if they think it was intentional.

ok but genuinely why is there no cancel button in UI Online?? Every other government system I've used in California has more functionality than EDD's website. I had to deal with this same exact confusion when I went back to work in February and spent forever hunting for a way to officially close things out. The website design is genuinely baffling.

The UI Online system is old and hasn't been fully modernized. They've added some features over the years but certain basic things that seem obvious just... aren't there. It's a known frustration.

Like at minimum they could add a 'I have returned to work' button that flags the claim as inactive. How hard can that be

Ashley Simian
You'd think right. The fact that you have to know to just 'stop filing' is not intuitive at all especially for first time claimants

Not to hijack but this thread is reminding me of my situation from last spring. I went back to work part time first and wasn't sure if I should keep certifying or stop. Kept certifying with partial wages reported for like 6 weeks before going full time. EDD paid partial benefits for those weeks which I didn't even expect. Point being - if anyone goes back part time first, you might still be entitled to partial UI while your hours ramp up, don't just assume you have to stop certifying the moment you start any work.
0 coins
Oliver Cheng
This is actually really useful info for people in that situation. Partial employment doesn't necessarily disqualify you from any benefits, EDD uses a formula based on your weekly benefit amount and what you earned.
0 coins
Ryder Everingham
Yeah the formula was confusing but it worked out. I just reported every dollar and hour honestly and EDD did the math.

For what it's worth I called EDD specifically to ask about this once and the rep confirmed what everyone's saying - there's no formal cancellation from the claimant side. They noted in my file that I was returning to work and that was it. The call took about 3 minutes once I actually got through to someone. Getting through was another story entirely, took me multiple attempts over several days.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
AuthorHow many times did you have to call before getting through? I'm dreading trying to reach someone.
0 coins
Mikayla Davison
Honestly I think I tried 6 or 7 times over three days before I got through. Mostly just got automated messages saying high call volume and got disconnected. If I had to do it again I'd probably try one of those call assistance services.

Ella Cofer
That's exactly why I used Claimyr when I needed to reach EDD - claimyr.com - instead of burning hours trying to get through manually. The process of actually getting a rep on the line is just too unreliable otherwise.

One more thing to add here that hasn't been mentioned - when you do certify for that final partial/transition week, make sure you answer the job search activity questions accurately too. I think there's a question about whether you were able and available for work and whether you looked for work that week. For the days before your new job started you technically should have been job searching so answer accordingly. Don't let those questions trip you up.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
AuthorOh good point I didn't even think about the job search questions for that week. So I report that I did do job search activities for the days before the new job started?
0 coins
Aisha Jackson
Right, for the days you were still unemployed that week you should have been conducting job search activities as required. If you were actively interviewing for the job you took that counts. Just be accurate about it.
0 coins
Felicity Bud
The job search requirement is 3 activities per week unless you're on standby status. For a partial week that started employment mid-week EDD is generally pretty reasonable about this in my experience.

just here to confirm this is the right info. went through the exact same thing last fall. stopped certifying after my transition week, reported my wages correctly, never heard another word from EDD. clean and simple.

Something I want to flag for OP - make sure you know exactly which week you're certifying for when you do that last one. UI Online certifies for the week ending on Saturday. So if your job started on a Wednesday, you'd certify for that full week (Sunday through Saturday) and report wages earned Wednesday through Saturday. Don't accidentally certify for the wrong week or skip one.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
AuthorHow do I know which weeks are available to certify for? It shows multiple options sometimes.
0 coins
Taylor To
In UI Online it should show you the available certification weeks in order. Certify for the week that contains your start date and report the wages for the days you actually worked. After that, no more certifications.

Miguel Harvey
Yeah the week structure (Sunday to Saturday) trips people up sometimes. Just look at the dates shown on the certification screen carefully before answering.

does anyone know if stopping your claim affects your credit or anything like that? my roommate told me it does but that sounds wrong to me
0 coins
Felix Grigori
No, unemployment benefits and your EDD claim activity have no impact on your credit report. Your roommate is mistaken. UI benefits aren't a loan and EDD doesn't report to credit bureaus. The only exception would be if you had an unpaid overpayment that somehow went to collections, which is a very different situation.

Kevin Bell
ok yeah that's what I thought, thanks for confirming. my roommate has some weird ideas about how EDD works lol

OP one thing that might give you peace of mind - after you stop certifying you can still log into UI Online and check your claim status. It should eventually show as inactive or exhausted (if you've used all benefits). Monitoring this for a few weeks after your last certification can confirm everything looks right on EDD's end.

Finnegan Gunn
AuthorWhat does the status actually say when a claim goes inactive from not certifying? Is there a specific status code I should look for?
0 coins
Ashley Simian
It usually just stops showing pending certifications and your balance stays frozen at whatever it was. There isn't always a dramatic 'INACTIVE' label, it just kind of shows nothing pending. If you're really uncertain the message system in UI Online or calling EDD directly with help from something like Claimyr at claimyr.com can get you a definitive answer from an agent.

Oliver Cheng
The lack of clear status indicators in UI Online is genuinely one of the more frustrating design issues. The system doesn't always make it obvious that your claim is inactive vs. just waiting for a certification.

I work in HR and we get questions from employees about this all the time when they come back from layoffs. The standard answer we give is: report your return to work wages on your final certification, then stop filing. That's the correct procedure. EDD will reconcile everything on the back end. The system is built to handle people returning to work - it's one of the most common situations they deal with.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
AuthorHonestly hearing it from an HR perspective is oddly reassuring. I kept thinking I was supposed to do something more official to 'close it out.
0 coins
Felicity Bud
It's a really common misconception that there's some formal cancellation step required. EDD designed the system around the reality that people come and go from employment frequently. Stop certifying = claim goes inactive. That's it.

wish EDD would just PUT THIS INFORMATION somewhere obvious on the website instead of leaving people to figure it out on forums like this

Late to this thread but wanted to share - I was in a similar situation and got paranoid enough that I actually sent EDD a written message through UI Online documenting my return to work date. Got an automated acknowledgment. A few weeks later my claim just showed nothing pending and I never had any issues. The message feature in UI Online is underutilized but it creates a record.

Finnegan Gunn
AuthorI think I'm going to do this. Just send a message saying I started work on X date and will no longer be certifying. Belt and suspenders approach.

That's exactly what I wrote. Something like 'I am writing to inform you that I returned to full-time employment on [date] and will no longer be submitting weekly certifications. Please update my claim accordingly.' Short and clear.

This is solid advice for anyone who wants documentation. It costs you two minutes and could save you a headache if EDD ever questions anything later.

random q but does having your unemployment claim sitting inactive affect your ability to file a NEW claim if you get laid off from this new job in like a year after the benefit year ends?
0 coins
Felix Grigori
No impact at all. After your current benefit year ends (12 months from your original filing date), that claim is done regardless. If you get laid off after a new benefit year begins you'd file a brand new claim based on new base period wages. Each claim cycle is independent.

Lindsey Fry
phew ok good. was worried about that

Your base period wages would be from the new job so your weekly benefit amount on a future claim would likely be based on what you're making at this new job anyway. Completely fresh start.

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for the help. I ended up certifying for my transition week, reported my wages from the new job for the days I worked, and got a small payment for the days before I started. I also sent a message through UI Online documenting my return to work. Claim is now sitting with no pending certifications. Feeling much better about the whole thing. Really appreciate everyone who took the time to explain this - the California EDD website gives basically zero guidance on this specific situation.
