Appeal for claim denied by EDD - What are my next steps?

Hey everyone, I just got my appeal for a claim denied and I'm not sure what to do next. Has anyone else gone through this process? Any advice on how to handle it or what steps I should take now? I'm feeling pretty lost and could use some guidance.

Ugh, that sucks. I've been there before. Did they give you any specific reason for denying the appeal? Sometimes they'll list it in the notification.

Thanks for responding. They didn't really give me a clear reason, which is part of why I'm so confused. The letter was pretty vague.

That's frustrating. Have you tried calling them directly? Sometimes you can get more info that way.

I've been trying, but it's impossible to get through. I've been on hold for hours 😫

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/0UZGuPWGErg

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? 🤔

Yeah, it actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I was desperate. It saved me hours of hold time.

Is it safe tho? Like, giving them your phone number and stuff?

Totally safe. They don't keep your info or anything. It's just a service to get through the phone system.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documentation. Make sure you have copies of everything related to your claim. 2. Write a detailed letter explaining why you think the denial is incorrect. Be specific and reference any relevant laws or regulations. 3. If possible, get any additional evidence that supports your case. 4. Submit a request for reconsideration. This is different from an appeal and might be faster. 5. If that doesn't work, you can request a hearing with an administrative law judge. 6. Consider getting legal help. Some nonprofits offer free assistance with these cases. Don't give up! The system is frustrating but keep pushing. Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! This is really helpful. I'll definitely start working on these steps.

This is great advice. I'd add that keeping a log of all your calls and correspondence can be really helpful too.

Have you considered reaching out to your local representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

I hadn't thought of that. How would I go about doing that?

Just google your state rep or congressman. They usually have a 'constituent services' section on their website where you can submit your issue.

OP, what state are you in? The process can vary a bit depending on location.

I'm in California. Does that change things?

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, CA has its own quirks. Might want to check out the EDD website for state-specific info.
