When to submit EDD PFL baby bonding claim for June 1 start date?

Hi everyone! My husband is planning to take his remaining baby bonding leave for our 4-month-old daughter. He only used 1 week when she was born (had to rush back to finish a big project at work 🙄), but now he wants to use his remaining 7 weeks starting June 1st. I'm getting different answers about when he should actually submit the PFL claim to EDD. His HR dept says 30 days before, the EDD website seems to say 9 days before, and my sister swears he can apply now (3 months early). Does anyone know the correct timing? I'm worried if he submits too early they'll deny it, but too late and he might not get paid on time. Thanks for any help!

i went thru this last year w/ my company. he can apply UP TO 30 days before his leave starts, not earlier!!! the claim form needs his last day worked which would be May 31 i guess? when i applied 2 months early they made me resubmit everything. huge pain

Oh no, good to know! We definitely don't want to deal with resubmitting everything. Thank you!

The official rule is that he can submit his PFL baby bonding claim no more than 30 days before his first day of leave (June 1st). So the earliest submission date would be May 2nd. Make sure he has these ready before applying: 1. His DE1PS form from his employer (leave verification) 2. The baby's birth certificate or other proof 3. His employment info and last day worked (May 31) I recommend applying right at the 30-day mark to give EDD enough processing time. The online system is much faster than paper forms. Also, make sure he's taken or scheduled ALL his baby bonding leave within the first year of birth - it expires after that.

This is super helpful - thank you! I'll make sure he has all those documents ready. And yes, our daughter turns 1 in August so we're making sure he uses all his time before then. We'll mark May 2nd on the calendar to submit.

when my husband took his leave last summer EDD was so backed up it took almost 3 weeks to get his first payment!!! make sure you guys have savings to cover bills if theres a delay. also they might call his employer to verify so tell him to give his boss a heads up

Same thing happened to us! We were expecting the payment within a week and had to put everything on credit cards when it took forever 😫

Let me clarify something important that others haven't mentioned - there's a difference between REQUESTING the leave from his employer and FILING the PFL claim with EDD. With his employer: He should request leave following company policy (often 30+ days notice) With EDD: He can file the actual PFL claim up to 30 days before his leave starts (so May 2 earliest for June 1 start) Also, since he's only used 1 week so far, he'll have 7 weeks remaining of the 8 weeks total baby bonding PFL available in 2025. Make absolutely sure his HR correctly codes this as baby bonding PFL, not vacation or sick time.

That's an excellent point about the two different processes! He already got approval from his work (they require 45 days notice), so we're just focused on the EDD part now. And yes, he should have 7 weeks left - glad to confirm that's right!

I spent HOURS trying to reach someone at EDD about my husband's baby bonding claim last month. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got us connected to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Totally worth it because the agent was able to tell us exactly what was missing from our application and fix it on the spot. We got paid the following week!

Do they require your SSN or anything? Sounds sketchy to me. I tried calling EDD 37 times one day and never got through, so I get the appeal, but I'm always wary of third-party services.

just a heads up the first payment after filing takes the longest!!! my husbands took almost 3 weeks but then the rest came on time every 2 weeks. also dont forget he needs to do the certification forms when they come otherwise payments stop!!!

One more important thing - when your husband files the claim, the system will ask if he's taking the leave all at once or intermittently. If he's taking all 7 weeks consecutively starting June 1, select "all at once." If he plans to break it up (like 3 weeks now, 4 weeks later), select "intermittent" and be aware this creates more paperwork as he'll need to file separate certifications for each period. And a tip from my own experience - take screenshots of EVERYTHING during the application process. The EDD website can be glitchy, and having proof of what you submitted can save a lot of headaches later.

Thank you for the additional info! He's planning to take all 7 weeks consecutively, so we'll select "all at once." And great tip about the screenshots - I wouldn't have thought of that!

To summarize for you and anyone else reading this thread about PFL baby bonding filing timeframes: 1. Earliest filing date: 30 days before leave starts (May 2nd for June 1st start) 2. Latest filing date: Technically within 41 days after leave begins, but don't wait - file before leave starts 3. Required documents: Birth certificate, DE1PS from employer, employment info 4. Process time: Typically 7-14 days but can take up to 3 weeks for first payment 5. Certification: Must complete bi-weekly certifications once claim is approved Also, remember that baby bonding leave must be completed within 12 months of birth/placement, and the minimum duration for any baby bonding leave period is 2 weeks (except for the final period if less than 2 weeks remain).

Thank you so much for this clear summary! This thread has been incredibly helpful. I'm going to show my husband all this info tonight so we can make sure we do everything correctly. Really appreciate everyone's help!

Just wanted to add one more tip that saved us - make sure your husband's employer doesn't accidentally mark his leave as "disability" instead of "baby bonding" on the DE1PS form! My company's HR did this initially and it caused a 2-week delay while EDD sorted it out. The codes are different and it matters for processing. Also, if he's planning to take the leave in June, I'd recommend applying exactly on May 2nd (the 30-day mark) rather than waiting. Summer tends to be busier for EDD with all the vacation schedules, so earlier is better. Good luck with everything!
