EDD PFL baby bonding for twins - one application or two? So confused!

I just had twins 6 weeks ago (yay sleep deprivation x2!) and I'm getting ready to apply for baby bonding PFL. My employer's HR dept said I should be filling out separate PFL applications for each baby, but when I started the online application, it only asks for ONE child's information. Now I'm totally confused! Do I submit two separate applications or just one application for twin baby bonding? Has anyone here gone through this with multiples? I'm worried about messing up and delaying my benefits since we're already struggling financially with double everything!

Congratulations on ur twins!! I had twins in 2025 and just did ONE application. The PFL is for YOUR time off work, not per child. I remember being confused too but the EDD agent told me that multiples dont = multiple claims. You get the same 8 weeks regardless if u have 1 baby or 5 babies (can u imagine?? lol). Just put one of the babies info in the form and maybe mention twins in the comments section if theres one.

Thank you!!! That's such a relief. My HR person had me so worried. So I only get 8 weeks total even with twins? I was hoping for 16 weeks (8 per baby) but that seemed too good to be true.

Your HR department is incorrect. For EDD PFL baby bonding, you only file ONE application regardless of how many children you're bonding with at the same time. The bonding leave is based on YOUR time away from work, not per child. The DE2508 form only has space for one child because that's all that's needed. For twins, you still receive the standard 8 weeks of Paid Family Leave for baby bonding. Unfortunately, you don't get double the time for twins - the benefit is per parent, not per child. Make sure to have both birth certificates ready though, as EDD might request documentation for verification purposes.

This is one of those things that SHOULD be clearer on the EDD website!!! I remember wondering the exact same thing when my sister had triplets. The system is designed for the typical situation and doesn't explain these edge cases well. But yeah, one application is all you need.

Not sure if this applies to your situation, but when I had my twins in July, I first had pregnancy disability (4 weeks before birth + 6-8 weeks after depending on delivery type) and THEN I did the baby bonding PFL. So altogether I got 18-20 weeks. Just make sure you understand the difference between disability for recovery and PFL for bonding - they're separate benefits with separate applications!

I did get pregnancy disability! I had a c-section so I got the 4 weeks before and 8 weeks after for recovery. Now I'm applying for the baby bonding portion. It's so confusing how they split it up into different benefits!

when i did my pfl for my twins in january i put both their names in the comment/additional info section just to be safe. one application is all u need but i figured better safe than sorry. also side note: why doesn't california give extra time for multiples?!! it makes no sense that someone with one baby gets the same time as someone with two or more!

Just to add another perspective: while California PFL doesn't give extra time for multiples, check if your employer has any additional leave policies. Some companies offer supplemental parental leave that DOES provide additional time for multiple births. My company gives an extra 4 weeks for twins or higher-order multiples on top of their standard parental leave policy. Worth asking your HR about this - they might have misunderstood your question about EDD benefits vs. company leave policy.

That's a really good point. I'll ask HR if they have any twin-specific policies. Maybe that's what they were trying to explain but got the EDD part wrong. Worth checking!

I spent THREE HOURS trying to get through to EDD last month about this exact question (plus other issues with my claim). Kept getting disconnected or stuck on eternal hold. BTW ur HR department probably got confused with FMLA/CFRA which is different from EDD. Those r the protected leave laws that keep ur job while ur out. EDD just pays u money during leave. They work together but r separate things. With FMLA/CFRA the time off doesnt change with multiples either, still 12 weeks total.

Just curious - did you already transition from SDI to PFL? That was the most confusing part for me. Had to CALL to get it fixed because the online system kept messing up my transition. Anyway, hope you get it sorted - twins are amazing but exhausting!

I'm in the transition process now! My SDI ended last week, and I'm applying for PFL to start immediately after. The online system is so weird about how you have to time it all. And yes - twins are amazing but I haven't slept more than 3 consecutive hours in 6 weeks lol

This is super helpful! I'm also expecting twins (due in about 6 weeks) and had no idea about any of this PFL stuff. So just to clarify - after the pregnancy disability period ends, I can immediately start the PFL baby bonding period? Do I need to wait for anything or can I apply for PFL while I'm still on disability? And do I need to coordinate this timing with my employer or does EDD handle the transition automatically?
