EDD Maternity Leave Mixup: How to Fix Accidental Disability Instead of PFL Claim?

Hey everyone, I'm a new mom and I'm having trouble with my maternity leave benefits. I recently transitioned from pregnancy disability leave to baby bonding, but I haven't received the link to fill out the necessary forms. I think I might have accidentally requested continued disability leave instead of the paid family leave claim for new mothers. Has anyone else dealt with this? How can I correct my claim and get the right link for baby bonding leave?

Congrats on the new baby! 🎉 I went through something similar last year. It's confusing because there are different types of leave. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact EDD immediately to explain the mistake 2. Ask them to cancel the continued disability claim 3. Request the correct form for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding 4. They should send you a link to form DE 2501FP 5. Fill it out ASAP - there's a time limit! Don't worry too much, they deal with this all the time. Just be persistent!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I'll definitely follow these steps. Do you remember how long it took for them to send you the correct link after you contacted them?

It took about 3-4 business days for me, but I've heard it can vary. If you don't get it within a week, call them again. Squeaky wheel gets the grease! 😉

This is great advice! I wish I had known this when I had my twins last year. The whole process was a nightmare 😫

Have you tried calling them? I know its a pain, but sometimes thats the only way to get things sorted out quickly.

I've tried calling, but I can never get through. It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yep, I've used it twice now. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny IMO.

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

I get it, but think about how much your time is worth. For me, not spending hours on hold was totally worth the cost.

This happened to me too! Make sure you keep track of all your correspondence with EDD. I had to appeal my case and having a paper trail really helped.

That's a great tip, thank you! I'll start documenting everything right away.

the whole system is broken af. why do they make it so hard for new parents? we should be focusing on our babies, not fighting bureaucracy 🤬

Preach! 🙌 It's like they want us to fail or something.

Ikr? Other countries have it so much better. My friend in Canada said their process was super smooth.

Have you checked your spam folder for the link? Sometimes EDD emails end up there. Also, try logging into your EDD account online - sometimes the forms are available there even if you didn't get the email.

I didn't even think to check my spam folder! I'll do that right now, thanks for the suggestion.

Congrats on the new baby! Don't stress too much about the paperwork - your little one is what's important. The EDD stuff will get sorted out eventually. Enjoy those newborn snuggles! 💖👶

Aww, thank you! You're right, I should focus on the baby. It's just hard not to worry about the financial stuff too.

Totally get it. Just remember, this phase goes by so fast. Try to soak it in when you can!

I just went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The key is to be very specific when you call - tell them you need to switch from SDI (State Disability Insurance) to PFL (Paid Family Leave) for bonding time. They have a specific department that handles these corrections. Also, make sure you have your claim number ready when you call. The good news is that once they fix it, you shouldn't lose any benefits - they'll just redirect your claim to the right program. Hang in there, mama! 💪

This is super helpful! I didn't know there was a specific department for these corrections. When you called, how long did it take them to actually make the switch? I'm worried about missing out on payments while they sort this out.
