Do I need to manually start my EDD PFL maternity claim after submitting papers with existing UI claim?
I'm 36 weeks pregnant and just sent in my maternity leave paperwork to EDD yesterday. Here's my situation - I already have an open UI claim from when my hours were cut back in January. I never actually certified for any payments on that UI claim because I knew I wouldn't qualify (not enough hours). Now I'm confused about what happens next with my pregnancy disability/maternity leave. Does EDD automatically switch me from the UI claim to maternity leave once they process my DE2501 form? Or do I need to do something else to activate the maternity benefits? Really don't want to mess this up and delay my payments after baby comes next month!

The previous response isn't entirely accurate. Your Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) claim through SDI is completely separate from your UI claim. You don't need to close the UI claim first. When EDD processes your DE2501 form, they'll establish a new SDI claim for your pregnancy/childbirth disability period. However, I would recommend logging into your EDD account in a few days to verify they received your paperwork and that the claim shows as pending. Sometimes paperwork gets lost or delayed. Once your SDI claim is established, you'll need to certify for those benefits (unlike UI which you didn't certify for). After your pregnancy disability period ends (usually 6-8 weeks after delivery depending on delivery type), you'll need to file a separate Paid Family Leave (PFL) claim for baby bonding using a DE2508 form if you want those additional 8 weeks of benefits.

•Thank you so much for the thorough explanation! I'll check my online account next week. So I actually need to file TWO claims - one for pregnancy disability now and then another one for baby bonding after birth? I had no idea!

I went thru this last year and it was a nightmare!!! My doctor submitted my maternity paperwork but EDD kept saying they never got it and my ui claim was still active and they wanted me to certify for UI even tho I wasnt working bc of being pregnant! I had to send the disability paperwork THREE TIMES before they finally processed it right. Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING.

•Oh no, that sounds awful! I made copies but now I'm worried they'll lose my paperwork too. Did you ever figure out what went wrong?

They said it was "processing error" whatever that means lol. Basically they had my forms but someone didnt enter them in the system right. I ended up getting backpay for everything but it took 2 months after my baby was born and I was freaking OUT about bills.

I had a similar situation last year. Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. Wait about 5-7 business days after sending your DE2501 for them to process it 2. Log into your EDD account and check if a new SDI claim appears 3. If nothing shows up after 7 days, you MUST call them Having an existing UI claim shouldn't affect your maternity benefits, as they're different programs (SDI vs UI). The system should automatically recognize that you're eligible for pregnancy disability once your doctor certifies your condition. After delivery, you'll need to transition from disability to baby bonding (PFL). That's when you'll file a separate DE2508 form. Your doctor will need to certify when you're no longer disabled from pregnancy/childbirth before you can start PFL. Important: Make sure all dates align properly. If there's any gap between your disability end date and PFL start date, you could lose benefits for those days.

•I just want to add that calling EDD is almost impossible these days!! I tried for TWO WEEKS to reach someone about my maternity claim last month. Always busy signals or disconnects. I finally used Claimyr.com to get through - they have a system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Totally worth it when you're pregnant and stressed about benefits!

Does anyone know how long after submiting maternity paperwork until you get paid? My friend said she got her first payment like 2 weeks after filing but that seems fast??

•It typically takes about 14 calendar days to process a clean claim with no issues. First payment usually arrives 2-3 days after approval if you selected EDD debit card. Direct deposit is 1-2 days faster. However, if there are any issues with your claim (missing information, employer verification needed, etc.), it can take 3-4 weeks or longer.

The EDD system is SO confusing with all these different benefit types! I made the mistake of thinking my maternity leave would automatically transition to baby bonding and ended up with a 3-week gap in benefits. What I learned: pregnancy disability (SDI) and baby bonding (PFL) are COMPLETELY separate claims, even though they're both through EDD. For your situation, having an inactive UI claim shouldn't cause problems as long as you're not certifying for UI while on disability. The key things to remember: 1. Track your claim status online religiously 2. Call if nothing shows up within a week 3. Know your exact disability end date (get it from your doctor) 4. File your baby bonding claim BEFORE your disability claim ends 5. SAVE EVERY PIECE OF PAPER they send you And yes, unfortunately, you might need to call them. Their online system is better than it used to be but still can't handle certain situations like yours.

•Thank you so much! I didn't realize I needed to file the baby bonding claim BEFORE my disability ends. This is all so complicated. I'll definitely start checking my online account next week to make sure they received my paperwork.

my hr lady told me u can get more weeks if u have csection jsut fyi

•That's correct. For vaginal delivery, the standard disability period is 4 weeks before birth and 6 weeks after. For C-section delivery, it's 4 weeks before birth and 8 weeks after. Your doctor can also extend these periods if there are complications. This is just for the disability portion (SDI) - everyone gets the same 8 weeks of baby bonding (PFL) regardless of delivery type.
