Desperate for mommy bonding PFL status update - quickest way to reach a live EDD agent?

I applied for EDD Paid Family Leave for baby bonding FOUR weeks ago and still can't see if my claim is approved or not!! Online account just says "pending review" with zero updates. I've been calling every day this week (around 30 times!!!) and either get disconnected or the automated system says they're too busy. Meanwhile, my savings are almost gone and my baby needs diapers and formula. I'm freaking out!!! Has anyone found a trick to actually talk to a real live person about their claim status? I've tried calling at 8:01am exactly and also right after lunch. Nothing works. There has to be a better way than this ridiculous phone system??

Yes, sent 3 messages through the portal! First one was 2 weeks ago. Still no response to any of them. It's like they're ignoring me on purpose 😭

OMG the EDD phone system is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!!!! I had the EXACT same problem with my baby bonding claim in December. Called 47 times in one day - FORTY-SEVEN!!! - and never got through. The system is DESIGNED to keep us from getting help. They probably have like 2 people answering phones for the whole state. Meanwhile we're just supposed to wait with no income? How are we supposed to feed our babies????? The whole system makes me FURIOUS.

This happened to me too. So frustrating. I had to borrow money from my parents while waiting for my claim to process.

Try reaching out to ur assembly member. My claim was stuck for 5 weeks then i contacted my local assembly person and they fixed it in 3 days. Google "California assembly member by address" to find urs.

I was in this exact situation last month with my PFL baby bonding claim. After trying for weeks to get through, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes. They have a service that basically keeps calling EDD for you until they get through, then connects you with the agent. Costs money but was totally worth it for me - the EDD agent was able to approve my claim right on the phone and I got my payment 2 days later. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I'm going to check it out right now. At this point I'd pay anything to get this resolved! Did they need any special information about your claim when you finally got through?

Hi there, for baby bonding PFL claims specifically, there are a few things to know about status updates: 1. PFL baby bonding claims typically take 14 business days to process (so about 3 weeks with weekends), but can take longer if there are verification issues with your employer. 2. The most effective times to call EDD are Tuesday-Thursday between 8:00-8:15am or 4:30-5:00pm. Mondays and lunch hours are absolute nightmares. 3. When you call, have ready your: Claim ID, last 4 of SSN, employer info, and the exact date you submitted your claim. 4. If you're transitioning from Pregnancy Disability to Baby Bonding, sometimes there's a delay because they need to fully close the disability claim before starting the PFL portion. I'd also recommend checking your spam/junk folder for any EDD emails that might have gotten filtered out asking for additional information. Sometimes they send requests for documents that get missed.

Thank you for the detailed advice! I'm not transitioning from disability - I'm the non-birthing parent, so this is just a straight baby bonding claim. I'll try calling during those specific windows you mentioned. I did check my spam folder and there's nothing from EDD there.

When I had trouble reaching EDD for my baby bonding claim last year, I found that calling their technical support line first (1-833-978-2511) actually worked better than the main line. Even though they're supposed to only handle technical account issues, the rep I spoke with was able to see my claim status and transferred me to the right department without making me wait in the main queue. Also, make sure you have all your claim information ready before calling - your EDD Customer Account Number (from your online account), the last 4 digits of your SSN, and the date you submitted your initial claim. This speeds things up once you do reach someone. For baby bonding PFL specifically, they sometimes need verification from your employer about your time off, so it's worth checking with your HR department to make sure they've responded to any EDD inquiries.

I didn't know about the tech support line being potentially easier to reach - that's a great tip! I'll try that tomorrow morning. And I'll double check with HR to make sure they've responded to anything EDD might have sent them. Thank you!

I had trouble with my claim too. Taking forever. Then I just went in person to the EDD office. Waited about an hour but at least got to talk to someone who could help me. Can you go to an office near you?

Most EDD offices don't handle PFL claims in person anymore - they'll just tell you to call the same number we're all struggling with! Ask me how I know 🙄

It looks like you've gotten some good advice already. One additional tip: When you do get through to EDD, ask them if there's anything specific delaying your claim. Sometimes there's a simple issue that can be resolved immediately. Also, if your claim gets approved but you need funds urgently, you can request that they expedite the payment. They don't advertise this option, but if you explain your financial hardship (needing formula and diapers certainly qualifies), they can sometimes process the payment faster than the standard timeline. Baby bonding PFL should be more straightforward than disability claims, so hopefully once you reach someone, they can resolve it quickly. Good luck!

I didn't know about the expedited payment option - that's really helpful! Will definitely ask about that when I finally reach someone. Thank you!
