SDI to PFL transition: When to apply, pay differences, and required docs?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out the transition from SDI to PFL. My SDI is ending soon and I'm not sure when to apply for PFL or what the differences are. Anyone been through this process recently? I'm especially curious about the pay difference and what documents I need. Any advice would be super helpful!

I found a way to solve SDI to PFL transition issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJIpYWnFuw

I just went through this! Here's what I learned: • Apply for PFL about 2 weeks before your SDI ends • PFL pays about the same as SDI (60-70% of your wages) • You don't need a doctor's note for PFL, but you do need docs for the family event (like a birth certificate) • A copy of the birth certificate is fine, don't send the original • If you're applying by mail, send it in early to allow for processing time Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is super helpful, thank you! Do you remember how long it took for your PFL to kick in after SDI ended?

For me, it was pretty seamless. My PFL started right after my SDI ended. Just make sure you apply early enough!

Quick question - did you apply online or by mail? I've heard mixed things about which is faster.

I applied online and it was pretty smooth. Seemed faster than mailing stuff in, but YMMV 🤷‍♂️

This is really comprehensive, thanks! Just to clarify - when you say "family event" documents, does that include things like adoption papers or just birth certificates? I'm in the process of adopting and want to make sure I have the right paperwork ready.

Heads up, the EDD website has been glitchy lately. I tried to apply online and kept getting errors. Ended up having to call them 🙄

Ugh, classic EDD. Their systems always seem to be down when you need them most 🤦‍♀️

Pro tip: try using the website late at night or early morning. Less traffic, fewer glitches!

Just a heads up, make sure you calculate your benefits correctly. I thought I'd get the same as SDI, but it was slightly different. Check their calculator on the website to be sure.

Anyone else feel like navigating these benefits is like trying to solve a rubik's cube blindfolded? 🤯 The system is so complicated!

LOL for real. I swear they make it confusing on purpose 🤡

It's not that bad if you read the instructions carefully. Just take your time and double-check everything.

@profile 9 look at mr. smartypants over here 🙄 some of us aren't rocket scientists, ya know

Hey guys, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of hold time.

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 😤

@profile 12 I get it, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, and I was going crazy trying to get through on my own.

Quick question - does anyone know if you can backdate PFL? I forgot to apply right away and now I'm worried I missed out on some benefits 😰

0 coins

I think you can backdate up to 30 days, but don't quote me on that. Best to check with EDD directly.

Thanks, I'll give them a call. Fingers crossed 🤞

PSA: Keep ALL your paperwork and correspondence with EDD. I learned the hard way that they can ask for stuff months later, and if you don't have it, you're SOL.

Has anyone else noticed that the pay stubs for PFL look different from SDI? Threw me for a loop the first time I saw it.

0 coins

Yeah, they use a different system. Took me a minute to figure out where everything was on the new format.

Protip: If you're having trouble with the online system, try using a different browser. Chrome seems to work best for me.

Firefox worked for me when Chrome was acting up. Worth a shot!

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread! I recently made the SDI to PFL transition and here are a few things I wish I had known: • You can actually overlap the applications slightly - I applied for PFL about 10 days before my SDI ended and there was no gap in payments • The weekly benefit amount might be slightly different due to how they calculate it, but it's usually within $10-20 of your SDI amount • Make sure your employer knows you're switching from SDI to PFL - they might need to update their records • If you're using direct deposit, the account info carries over automatically which is nice Also, regarding the documents @Emma Johnson mentioned - for adoption cases like @Finley Garrett asked about, you'll need either the adoption decree or placement documentation from the agency. Birth certificates are only needed for biological children. Hope this helps someone! The transition was way less stressful than I expected once I got the timing right.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm a couple weeks away from my SDI ending and was getting really anxious about the timing. The overlap tip is gold - I had no idea you could do that. Also super helpful about the employer notification, I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏

@Brooklyn Knight Thanks for the detailed info! Quick follow-up question - when you say the weekly benefit amount might be different by $10-20, is that usually higher or lower than SDI? Just trying to budget for the transition. Also, did you have to do anything special to notify your employer or did EDD handle that automatically?
