SDI Filing: Last Work Day vs. Delivery Date - Which Affects Benefits More?
Hey everyone, I'm pregnant and trying to figure out when to file for SDI. I started working and paying into it last August. My question is, should I file based on my last day of work in March or my delivery date in April? I'm not sure how the qualifying quarters affect this. My average weekly pay is around $1100 if that helps. Anyone been through this recently?

Congrats on the baby! 🎉 From my experience, you should file based on your last day of work. The qualifying quarters are important, but since you started in August, you should be good. Just make sure you have all your income info ready when you file.

•Thanks! Do you know if filing on the last day of work vs. delivery date affects the benefit amount?

•In my case, it didn't make a huge difference. But def ask EDD to be sure. Every situation is unique!

•Actually, I think it can affect the benefit amount. The calculation is based on your highest-earning quarter in the base period, which changes depending on when you file.

Ugh, dealing with SDI is such a headache. I swear they make it confusing on purpose 🙄

•Tell me about it! Spent hours on hold just to get conflicting info from different reps. It's a joke.

Here's what you need to know about SDI filing for pregnancy: 1. Qualifying Quarters: You need to have earned at least $300 in wages that were subject to SDI deductions during your base period. 2. Base Period: This is the 12-month period that the EDD uses to determine your eligibility and benefit amount. 3. Filing Date: You can file up to 49 days before your expected delivery date, but no later than 41 days after the actual delivery date. 4. Benefit Calculation: Your weekly benefit amount is approximately 60-70% of your average weekly wage during the highest quarter of your base period. 5. Duration: You can typically receive benefits for up to 4 weeks before your due date and 6-8 weeks after delivery (longer for c-sections). In your case, since you started working in August, you should have enough qualifying quarters. I'd recommend filing based on your last day of work in March, as this might give you a more favorable base period. However, it's always best to confirm with EDD directly. Hope this helps!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•How does it work exactly? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

•Pretty much. They have some tech that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold. When a real person answers, it connects you. Beats sitting on hold yourself!

Has anyone else noticed that the SDI website is always "under maintenance" when you need it most? 🙃

•Pro tip: try accessing the site late at night or early morning. Less traffic, fewer issues.

Just a heads up, make sure you have all your docs ready before you file. They asked me for way more info than I expected and it delayed my claim by weeks.

•Thanks for the tip! What kind of docs did they ask for?

•They wanted paystubs, my last year's W-2, and a letter from my employer confirming my last day of work. Better to have too much than not enough!

Anyone else feel like they need a law degree to understand these benefit rules? 🤔📚

•For real! I swear they make it complicated on purpose to discourage people from claiming 🙄

•Nah, its just typical government inefficiency. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence 😅

Quick question - does anyone know if bonuses affect the SDI calculation? I got a performance bonus last quarter and I'm not sure if that changes anything.

Protip: Keep a detailed log of all your interactions with EDD. Note down who you talked to, when, and what they said. It'll save you so much hassle if there are any discrepancies later!
