Need help: New job has me as hourly instead of salary - how to get HR to fix?
Hey everyone, I need some advice. I just got a new job and I'm supposed to be paid salary, but they've got me set up as hourly. I need to talk to HR to fix this, but I'm not sure how to approach it. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's the best way to explain the situation and get it corrected?

Congrats on the new job! This happened to me too. Just be straightforward with HR. Tell them there's been a mixup with your pay type and you were supposed to be salaried, not hourly. They should be able to fix it pretty quick.

•Thanks! Did you have to provide any documentation or was it just a simple conversation?

•For me it was just a convo, but have your offer letter handy just in case. They might need to see where it says you're salaried.

make sure you understand the pros and cons of salary vs hourly before you make the switch. Sometimes hourly can be better if you work a lot of overtime.

•That's a good point. I hadn't thought about overtime. I'll def look into that before I talk to HR.

•Yep, this is important. I switched from hourly to salary and lost out on a ton of OT pay. Make sure its worth it for you!

I had a similar issue and it took forever to get someone on the phone to fix it. I finally found a solution tho! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit?

•Totally get why you'd think that, but yeah it's legit. Saved me hours of hold time.

•How does it work exactly? Do they just keep redialing until they get through?

•Nah, it's more advanced than that. It navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. When a real person picks up, it calls your phone. Pretty slick tbh.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Check your offer letter and contract. Make sure it clearly states you're supposed to be salaried. 2. Gather any relevant emails or communications about your pay structure. 3. Schedule a meeting with HR. Don't just drop by - this shows you're taking it seriously. 4. During the meeting, calmly explain the discrepancy between your offer and how you're currently being paid. 5. Ask about the process to correct this and how long it will take. 6. Follow up with an email summarizing what was discussed in the meeting. 7. If it's not resolved in a reasonable timeframe, escalate to your manager or HR director. Remember, mistakes happen. Approach this as a problem to solve together, not an accusation. Good luck!

•Great advice! I'd add: keep a paper trail of everything. You never know when you might need it.

•Depends on the job tbh. Some salaried positions come with better benefits and bonuses.

Whatever you do, don't let this slide. I made that mistake and it messed up my taxes and benefits for a whole year. Fix it ASAP!
