Need EDD SDI help after being denied - looking for disability attorney recommendations in Orange County
I'm at my wit's end with EDD SDI. My disability claim was denied even though my doctor submitted all the required medical documentation for my severe back injury (herniated disc with nerve compression). They're saying I didn't provide enough evidence that I can't work, but I literally can't stand for more than 15 minutes without excruciating pain! I've already filed an appeal online, but I'm thinking I need legal help at this point. My appeal hearing is scheduled for next month, and I'm getting desperate as I haven't received any benefits since December 2024. Can anyone recommend a good disability attorney in the Orange County area who specializes in EDD SDI cases? I'm looking for someone who has experience specifically with appealing denied disability claims, not just workers' comp or SSDI. Also, any tips for the appeal hearing would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone successfully appealed a denial without an attorney?

Before hiring an attorney, have you tried contacting EDD directly about why your claim was denied? Sometimes there's a simple misunderstanding that can be resolved with a phone call. Make sure to have your claim ID and medical documentation ready when you call. Also check if your doctor used the correct diagnostic codes on your medical certification form - that's a common reason for denials.

•I've been trying to call them for TWO WEEKS and can't get through! Either constant busy signals or it hangs up after I'm on hold for an hour. My doctor's office confirmed they used the right codes on the DE 2501 form. The denial letter just says 'insufficient medical documentation to support disability claim' but doesn't explain what's missing. So frustrating!

I had a similar situation last year with my carpal tunnel disability claim. Got denied even with all the right paperwork. Ended up using Johnson & Associates in Newport Beach - they really know their stuff with EDD appeals. Won my case and got backpay too!

•Actually I wouldn't recommend an attorney for SDI appeals. EDD appeals are administrative hearings, not court cases. You don't need a lawyer to represent you - just bring all your medical documentation, be prepared to explain why you can't work, and maybe have your doctor write a more detailed letter. Save yourself the attorney fees.

•Thanks for the recommendation! Did Johnson & Associates charge a lot? Did they take a percentage of your backpay or was it a flat fee?

Before going the attorney route, try getting through to an actual EDD representative to understand exactly why your claim was denied. I've had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach EDD quickly - they connect you with an agent instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. I was skeptical at first but managed to get someone on the phone in about 20 minutes after trying unsuccessfully for days on my own. For your appeal, make sure you have: 1. Detailed medical records showing objective findings (MRI reports, etc.) 2. A letter from your doctor specifically addressing your work limitations 3. Your treatment history and prognosis 4. Documentation of any medications that affect your ability to work Sometimes just getting clarification on why exactly they denied your claim can help you prepare properly for the appeal.

•Thank you for these tips! I'll check out that Claimyr service - at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything to talk to an actual human at EDD. I do have my MRI report showing the herniation, but I should probably get a more detailed letter from my doctor about specific work limitations. Did you win your appeal without an attorney?

I beat my EDD denial without a lawyer! But I had to be SUPER organized. Bring every piece of paper related to your condition - test results, doctor notes, medicine list, EVERYTHING. And dress nice for the hearing, it actually helps.

•lol it's not a fashion show, the judge decides based on medical evidence not your outfit

I'm going through something similar right now with my SDI claim for my anxiety/depression. EDD keeps saying they need more documentation but won't tell me what specifically they need?? My therapist has sent in like 3 different forms. The whole system feels designed to make us give up. I also can't get anyone on the phone no matter what time I call. Has anyone from Orange County used Legal Aid Society? I heard they sometimes help with disability cases but I'm not sure about EDD specifically.

•For mental health claims, EDD often requires more detailed documentation than for physical injuries. Make sure your psychiatrist or therapist is clearly documenting how your condition specifically prevents you from performing your job duties. They should be very explicit about functional limitations rather than just listing symptoms or diagnosis.

If you're still looking for an attorney recommendation, Disability Rights California provides free legal assistance for disability-related issues, including some EDD matters. Their OC office number is 714-XXX-XXXX. Also, the State Bar of California has a referral service where you can find attorneys who specialize in disability benefits cases.

•Thank you! I'll contact Disability Rights California tomorrow. I didn't realize there were free legal resources available. I've been so stressed about adding legal fees on top of having no income coming in.

@Johnson & Associates charged me a flat fee of $600 for my case, not a percentage. Worth every penny since I got over $8000 in backpay! But the other commenters have good points about trying free resources first.

•That's actually more reasonable than I expected. I'll try the free resources first, but it's good to know there are affordable options if I need to go that route. Thanks!

For your appeal hearing, key things that help win: 1. Make sure all medical evidence is submitted at least 5 days before hearing 2. Prepare a timeline of your medical treatment 3. If possible, have your doctor attend by phone (they'll rarely come in person) 4. Connect your medical condition directly to your job duties - be specific about what movements/activities cause pain 5. Bring a daily pain/activity journal if you've been keeping one I've helped several friends prepare for SDI appeals, and these approaches significantly improve success rates. The administrative law judges want clear, concrete evidence that connects your medical condition to your inability to work.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I never would have thought to ask my doctor to call in to the hearing. I'll start keeping a pain journal immediately - that's a great idea. Do you know if the appeals judge will have access to all the documents I already submitted with my original claim?
