Monthly certifications for EDD SDI during pregnancy - is this normal?

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and my OB just told me she wants to certify my pregnancy disability claim MONTHLY instead of for the whole leave period. She said something about monitoring my condition more closely, but I'm freaking out about potential payment delays! Has anyone had their doctor do monthly certifications for SDI pregnancy disability? What happens if there's a gap between certifications? Will my payments stop and restart? I'm the only income source for our household right now (husband is in school), and we can't afford ANY payment interruptions. Anyone had experience with this situation?

Yes, this is actually becoming more common with pregnancy claims. My doctor did this for me last year when I had complications. Each month she'd submit a new certification and there was usually a 3-5 day processing delay before payments resumed. Make sure you and your doctor stay on top of the certification dates so there's no gap between them. I'd recommend having her submit the next cert at least 7 days before the current one expires.

Thank you! So there WILL be delays between payments? That's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you have to file a new claim each month or just have your doctor submit a new medical certification?

my friends Dr did the same thing bc she had high blood pressure during her pregnancy. not sure what the big deal is tho? the dr just fills out a form each month. its not like u have to do anything special

The big deal is if there's a delay in payments! We literally can't pay rent if my SDI is late even by a few days. I'm trying to figure out if I should take out a loan or something as backup.

I went through this exact situation last year. My OB wanted to do monthly certifications because I had borderline gestational diabetes. I was SUPER worried about payment delays too. Here's what I learned: 1. You don't file a new claim each month - it's just continuing certification forms (DE 2525XX) 2. YES there can be delays between certifications processing 3. EDD is supposed to process them within 7-10 days but sometimes takes longer 4. Set calendar reminders for both you AND your doctor's office 5. Call your doctor's office 2 days after they should have submitted to confirm it's done 6. The EDD online account doesn't always update quickly to show new certifications Is there any way your OB will reconsider and do at least 2 months at a time?

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll talk to my OB about doing 2 months at a time at my next appointment. The gestational diabetes concern is actually one of her worries for me too based on some family history. Did your payments ever completely stop between certifications or did they just get delayed?

THE EDD IS THE WORST!!! I had this happen and they completely STOPPED my payments for 3 WEEKS because my doctor's office was late submitting ONE certification form!!! And guess what?? I couldn't even reach anyone on the phone to fix it!!! The whole system is designed to make us give up and suffer!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. How did you eventually get it resolved? Did you have to go into an office?

When I had my baby last summer, my doctor did monthly certifications due to my blood pressure issues. Here's what helped me avoid payment gaps: 1. Get the direct contact info for the person in your doctor's office who submits the forms 2. Ask them exactly what date they'll be submitting the next certification 3. Ask your doctor to set the start date of the next certification period to overlap with the previous one by 1-2 days 4. Check your EDD SDI Online account daily as your certification period nears its end FYI - When I had problems with a delayed certification, I spent hours trying to reach someone at EDD. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EDD agent who fixed my claim immediately. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It saved me from missing a rent payment when my certification got stuck in pending for no reason.

To answer your earlier question - the payments don't completely stop and restart like a new claim would. It's just that there can be processing delays between certification periods. In my experience, the first certification had the longest wait time (about 2 weeks). After that, the monthly ones were processed faster, usually 3-5 days. But that was still stressful when bills were due!

That's a bit reassuring. I guess I should plan to have at least 2 weeks of expenses saved up for that first certification period, and then maybe a week's worth for each monthly one after that. This is so stressful!

To clarify on your question about payments stopping - in my case, the payments didn't completely stop, but there were definitely delays between certification periods. My longest gap was 9 days without payment while they processed the next certification. I recommend having at least 2 weeks of expenses saved if possible. Also, make sure you know exactly when your claim is certified through (check your online account and the physical letters they send). The certification end date is key - you want the next certification submitted at least a week before that date. Also, double-check that your doctor is using the right form codes. For pregnancy disability, they should be using specific pregnancy disability forms, not the general disability forms.

This is SO helpful, thank you! I just checked my online account and saw my doctor used form DE 2501 for the initial certification. Is that right for pregnancy? And do you know what form code she should use for the monthly ones?

i had this problem and the EDD kept saying they never got my doctors certification even tho the office swore they sent it!!! i wasted sooo much time going back and forth between them and almost got evicted!! monthly certifications are the WORST!

DE 2501 is the correct initial form. For the monthly certifications, your doctor should submit form DE 2525XX. There are several versions of this form depending on your specific situation. For pregnancy disability, it's typically the DE 2525P. Here's another tip: if you ever have trouble reaching EDD by phone (which is very common), you can try using SDI Online to send them a secure message. It's not as immediate as a phone call, but they usually respond within 5-7 business days, and it creates a paper trail of your communication.

Thank you for confirming the form numbers! I'll definitely ask my doctor's office which version of the DE 2525XX they'll be using for my monthly certs. I've tried the secure message feature before and waited 12 days for a response about something else... so I'm not very confident in that method. But at least it's an option.

i had a high risk pregnancy last year and my doctor did monthly certifications. actually ended up being helpful because i needed to extend my disability longer than originally planned due to complications and we just adjusted the next certification instead of having to file a new claim or extension. Just make sure your doctor submits EARLY!

Since you mentioned you're the sole provider right now, I highly recommend documenting everything. Take screenshots of your SDI Online account showing received certifications, payment histories, etc. Also keep a log of when forms were submitted by your doctor. If a payment delay happens (which is common with monthly certifications), having this documentation makes it easier to resolve. When I had issues, the EDD agent I finally reached was able to fix things much faster because I had all the certification dates and confirmation numbers ready. Also, consider asking your doctor to note in your file why they're doing monthly certifications instead of the standard pregnancy disability period. This can help if you ever need to appeal a decision.

This is excellent advice! I'm going to start a dedicated notebook just for tracking all of this. My OB mentioned she's concerned about my blood pressure and potential gestational diabetes (family history), so I'll make sure that's documented too. Thank you so much for your help!
