How long after first SDI certification until payment arrives? New claimant confused about timeline

Hi everyone! I just submitted my very first SDI certification yesterday after being on medical leave for two weeks. I'm completely new to this process and feeling a bit lost. My doctor submitted all the medical paperwork last week, and I got the notice to certify, which I did online yesterday morning. Does anyone know approximately how long it typically takes for the first payment to arrive after certification? I'm trying to budget for upcoming bills and need to know if I should expect it this week or if it usually takes longer for first-time payments. Also, will future payments come automatically or do I need to certify every time? Thanks in advance for any help! 😊

For first-time SDI payments, it typically takes 7-10 business days after you certify to receive your payment. That's assuming there are no issues with your claim or medical certification form. Since you said your doctor already submitted the medical paperwork and you got prompted to certify, that's a good sign! Your future payments will require certification every two weeks, but the system should automatically notify you when it's time to certify again. The first payment takes the longest because they're establishing your claim, subsequent ones usually process faster.

Thank you so much! So I should expect it maybe late next week if all goes well? Do they send an email when the payment is processed or do I just need to keep checking my account?

mine took like 3 weeks lol so dont get ur hopes up to high

Oh no, seriously? Did they ever explain why it took so long? Was there an issue with your claim?

When I filed back in January it took exactly 6 days for my first payment to hit my account. It's definitely getting faster compared to how it used to be! MAKE SURE you set up the direct deposit though, the EDD debit card takes FOREVER to arrive in the mail. Also, there's a 7-day unpaid waiting period at the beginning of every SDI claim, so your first payment will only cover the time after that waiting period. Did your doctor date your disability starting more than 7 days ago? If not, you might not see much money on that first payment.

THIS!! The waiting period KILLED me when I first filed. I thought it was a glitch when my first payment was so low, but then I realized they don't pay for the first 7 days. So stupid!!!!

In my experience, the timeline varies quite a bit depending on your specific situation and EDD's current workload. For a straightforward claim where all documentation was submitted correctly, you could see payment within 5-7 business days after certification. However, if there are any discrepancies or additional verification needed, it could take 2-3 weeks or longer. A few important things to note: - Yes, the 7-day waiting period applies to all SDI claims (it's not paid) - You'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks - You can check payment status in your SDI Online account - Set up direct deposit for faster payment If you don't see any updates after 10 business days, I'd recommend trying to contact EDD directly. Getting through on the phone can be challenging though.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I'll keep checking my SDI Online account. Do you happen to know what time of day they usually process payments? And is there a way to see if there are any issues with my claim that might be causing a delay?

I just went through this whole process last month for my back surgery. Took exactly 8 days for my first payment. The next ones came faster, usually 3-4 days after certifying. Just be aware that if you go back to work earlier than expected you HAVE to tell them or you could get hit with an overpayment notice later. I had a coworker who didn't notify them promptly and now she has to pay back like $2,800!

That's good to know about reporting when I return to work! My doctor estimates I'll be out for 6 weeks total, but I'm hoping to recover faster. I'll definitely make sure to notify them if I go back early.

If you're still waiting after a week, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent by phone. I spent DAYS trying to reach someone about my delayed payment, getting disconnected or waiting on hold for hours. Then I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com), and they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. The agent fixed an issue with my claim that wasn't even showing up in my online account. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It was definitely worth it because the agent processed my payment while I was on the call with them. Otherwise I might still be waiting!

does that actually work? seems sketchy

I'm currently on SDI too and here's the TRUTH no one tells you - there's absolutely NO consistency with EDD payment timing! My friend got her first payment in 4 days. Mine took 16 days! Second payment came in 5 days. Third payment took 9 days. It's completely random and depends on their workload, whether there are any holidays, if Mercury is in retrograde, or if the EDD payment fairy had her coffee that morning. 😂 Seriously though, don't plan your bill payments around when you THINK the money will arrive. Always have a buffer if possible. The system is frustrating and unpredictable!

Ugh, that's so stressful! I was really hoping to time my bill payments with when the disability check arrives. Sounds like I should just plan for the worst case scenario. Thanks for the honest feedback!

Just wondering - what kind of disability are you on? Because pregnancy disability claims seem to get processed faster than other types. When I was on SDI for carpal tunnel last year it took foreverrrr, but my sister's pregnancy claim was super quick.

I'm on leave for recovery from a surgery (gallbladder removal with some complications). Not pregnancy related. I hope that doesn't mean mine will be delayed!

To follow up on my earlier comment - I've noticed that checking your payment status obsessively doesn't make it arrive any faster (trust me, I've tried! 😅). The EDD claim system updates overnight, so checking once in the morning is sufficient. When your payment is processed, you'll see a transaction in your payment history section labeled "DI - DISBURSEMENT" with the amount and date. If two weeks pass and you still don't see anything, that's when you should try contacting them. But based on what you've shared, your claim seems straightforward and should process within the normal timeframe.

Thank you! Just checked this morning and it says "pending" still, but at least I know what to look for now. I'll try to be patient and only check once a day... trying is the key word there haha!

Hey there! I'm also pretty new to the SDI process - just filed my claim about a month ago for a knee surgery. From what I experienced and learned from others here, the first payment really is the wildest card in terms of timing. Mine took 9 days, but I've seen people get theirs anywhere from 5 days to 3+ weeks. One thing that helped me stay sane during the wait was setting up text notifications in my SDI Online account - at least then you get pinged when there's any status change instead of constantly logging in to check. Also, if you have a Bank of America account, the EDD debit card payments show up there instantly when processed, versus waiting for direct deposit to clear. Fingers crossed yours comes through quickly! The waiting is definitely the worst part, especially when you're trying to budget around it. Keep us posted on how it goes! 🤞

Thanks Emma! That's really helpful about the text notifications - I had no idea that was an option. I'll definitely set that up so I'm not obsessively checking the website every few hours. And good to know about the Bank of America thing too, though I have a different bank. How are you feeling post-surgery? Hope your recovery is going smoothly! I'm dealing with gallbladder surgery recovery myself, so I totally get the whole healing-while-stressed-about-money thing. 😅

Welcome to the SDI journey! 😊 I went through this exact same anxiety when I first filed my claim last year. From my experience, you're likely looking at about 7-10 business days for your first payment, but honestly it can vary quite a bit. The good news is that since you already got prompted to certify, it sounds like your paperwork went through without any major issues. A couple of tips that would have saved me some stress: - Download the EDD mobile app if you haven't already - it's actually more reliable than the website for checking status updates - Make sure you have your direct deposit set up correctly in your account (the debit card route takes forever) - Keep your certification confirmation number just in case The waiting period for the first payment is brutal, but once you're in the system, subsequent payments are much more predictable. Hang in there - you've got this! And don't hesitate to ask if you run into any weird issues, this community has been super helpful when I've had questions.
