EDD SDI deadline after hand surgery - can't physically complete forms!
Had reconstructive surgery on my right hand (I'm right-handed) on April 2nd and I'm completely unable to write or use keyboard properly. My surgeon said I'd qualify for SDI but I'm panicking about the application timeline! The nurse mentioned something about filing within 49 days but I literally cannot fill out forms or sign anything. My husband tried helping but the online system kept giving errors when he tried entering my information. Has anyone dealt with applying for disability when physically unable to complete forms? Will EDD give me an extension because of my situation? I'm worried about missing deadlines and losing benefits I desperately need while recovering.

•Thank you!! Do you know if my husband can sign for me? The system kept rejecting his attempt when he tried using my login info. I'm just so stressed about missing deadlines.

You have 49 days from your first day of disability to file your SDI claim, so you still have plenty of time. Given your disability affects your ability to complete the application, you have two options: 1. Have someone help you complete the application as your authorized representative. Your doctor will need to submit the medical certification (DE 2501) confirming your disability. 2. Call EDD directly and explain your situation. They can make accommodations for people who physically cannot complete their own paperwork. Make sure you have your medical documentation ready. Your doctor should have initiated the medical certification process already since you've had surgery.

•Thank you for the clear explanation! My doctor said they submitted something electronically but I wasn't sure if that was enough. I'll have my husband try again as my representative. If that doesn't work we'll have to figure out how to reach EDD directly.

The EDD's phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! I tried calling 28 times last month about my disability claim and either got hung up on or was on hold for 2+ hours only to get disconnected. The system is BROKEN and they don't care about disabled people who physically can't deal with their bureaucratic nightmare!!!!

•Same experience here, but I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an EDD rep in under 15 minutes. Saved me days of frustration! Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website claimyr.com - they basically navigate the EDD phone system for you and call you when they get a rep on the line. Worth it when you physically can't keep redialing like the OP with hand surgery.

I went through something similar with a shoulder surgery in January. Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. Your doctor should have already submitted their portion electronically (Form DE 2501) - confirm this happened 2. For your portion, you can legally have someone complete it as an authorized helper (spouse, family member, friend) but YOU must be present during the process 3. If online isn't working, request a paper application - call 1-800-480-3287 4. Document everything - who you spoke with, dates, times, and keep copies of all paperwork 5. Don't worry too much about deadlines - EDD generally makes accommodations for people with legitimate physical limitations, especially when the limitation is the actual disability Your claim will be backdated to your first day of disability (day after your last day worked). The 7-day waiting period still applies, but you won't lose benefits due to filing delays in your situation.

•Thank you so much for the detailed steps! I'll definitely confirm with my doctor about the DE 2501 form. My husband will try again with me present. I'm just worried because I can't even sign my name right now with my dominant hand completely immobilized.

I think everyone is missing something important here - if your DOCTOR hasn't submitted their certification you're in trouble. When I had my disability claim last year it took my doctor 3 weeks to submit the paperwork and EDD wouldn't process anything until they got it. So forget about YOU filling anything out - make sure your DOCTOR has done their part!!

•This is actually not entirely accurate. While yes, the doctor needs to submit their certification, there are two separate parts to a disability claim: (1) the claimant's statement and (2) the doctor's medical certification. Both are needed, but they can be submitted separately and in either order. The claim isn't complete until both parts are received, but either part can be submitted first. The 49-day filing period applies to the claimant's portion specifically.

Update: I called my doctor and they confirmed they already submitted the medical certification electronically on April 3rd (day after surgery). My husband is going to try filling out my portion again with me sitting next to him to answer questions. If that doesn't work, we'll try reaching EDD directly or maybe try that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Thank you all for the helpful advice! This is such a stressful situation when you physically can't use your hand.

One additional tip - if your husband is helping you with the online portion, make sure he selects "Yes" when asked if someone is helping you complete the form. There's a specific section for this in the SDI Online application. If he doesn't select this option, the system may flag it as potentially fraudulent activity since the login patterns and possibly the IP address will be different from your normal access patterns. Also, EDD now allows representatives to help with forms, but there are specific guidelines. The person must: - Be present with you during the application process - Only enter information you provide - Document that they assisted you This is all perfectly legal when dealing with a physical disability that prevents form completion. I've helped several clients through this exact process in my work as a disability advocate.

•Thank you! This explains why we kept getting errors. He wasn't selecting the helper option because we didn't see it. We'll try again tonight with this in mind.

•While this might have worked for your cousin, it's technically not the correct procedure and could potentially cause problems. The proper way is to indicate someone is assisting with the application. EDD does monitor for unusual activity on accounts, especially since the pandemic fraud issues.
