EDD Disability debit card arrival after 10/1 payment + transition to PFL timing
So I finally got my first payment dated 10/1 and I selected debit card as my payment option when I applied for SDI. Anyone know approximately when I'll receive the BofA card in the mail? My doctor said my disability should last about 12 weeks but I'm not sure how to find out exactly when my SDI benefits end so I can apply for PFL to bond with my newborn. I don't want to miss a single day of benefits between the two programs, but I also don't want to apply for PFL too early. Is there a way to see my claim end date somewhere on the EDD website? This whole process is so confusing!

The BofA debit card usually arrives within 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed. Sometimes quicker, but I'd say by mid-October you should have it in hand. Your payment will already be loaded onto it when it arrives. As for knowing when your SDI ends - check your SDI Online account under "Claim Details." There should be a "Benefit End Date" listed. That's when your doctor certified your disability will end. You should apply for PFL a week or two before that date to ensure a smooth transition. The system will automatically stop your SDI when your PFL begins.

â˘Thank you so much! I'll check my claim details for that end date. Do I have to wait until I receive the physical debit card to access those funds, or is there any way to use them immediately after they're posted?

I waited almost 3 WEEKS for my card last year!! It was ridiculous. Called BofA and they said it was already sent but obviously it wasn't. Had to request a replacement. Check your mail carefully because it comes in a plain envelope that looks like junk mail!

â˘Same thing happened to me in July! Threw it away thinking it was junk mail, then had to wait ANOTHER 10 days for the replacement. So frustrating when you're trying to pay bills.

For your PFL transition timing - make sure you apply for PFL within 41 days of your baby's birth or adoption, regardless of when your disability ends. You can have your doctor adjust your disability end date if needed. For bonding with your baby, you get up to 8 weeks of PFL. If your disability is pregnancy-related, they usually certify it for 6-8 weeks for normal delivery or 8-10 weeks for C-section. If you're stressed about timing, call EDD and ask them to confirm your disability end date and when you should apply for PFL. The official recommendation is to apply for PFL 1-2 weeks before your disability claim ends.

â˘Thank you! I had a C-section so that's why they gave me 12 weeks total. I'll definitely apply for PFL about 10 days before my SDI ends. I just wish there was an easier way to confirm everything is on track!

I had the EXACT same question back in April! So stressful trying to figure out when to transition from SDI to PFL. I tried calling EDD for days but kept getting disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person at EDD. They have this service where they connect you with an EDD agent directly - watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd) and decided to try it since I was desperate. The EDD rep confirmed my SDI end date and walked me through exactly when to file for PFL so there wasn't a gap. Saved me so much stress during an already stressful time with a newborn! Timing the transition correctly is really important.

â˘That's really helpful! I might try that service if I keep running into walls. I've tried calling twice already and just got disconnected both times after waiting forever. Did the EDD rep give you any other tips for making the transition smoother?

â˘Yes! The rep told me to gather my baby's birth certificate, my ID, and have my claim ID ready before applying for PFL. Also said to specifically mention in the PFL application that I was transitioning from SDI. Apparently that helps them process it faster. The whole call took maybe 15 minutes once I got through.

Anyone else notice how the EDD website is almost NEVER updated with current info??? My dashboard still showed my claim as "pending" even after I got my first payment! I wouldn't rely on the website to tell you when your disability ends. Just go by what your doctor certified you for and plan accordingly. Oh and the debit card - they use the SLOWEST mail service possible I swear. My neighbor got hers in 4 days, mine took 2 weeks. Makes no sense.

â˘That's so frustrating! I was hoping the website would be more reliable. I'll definitely keep track of what my doctor certified me for rather than relying just on the EDD site. Thanks for the heads up!

One thing to note about the transition from SDI to PFL - you don't have to serve another waiting period when switching from disability to paid family leave. This is a common misconception. The 7-day waiting period only applies to your initial disability claim. Also, keep in mind that while your doctor certified you for 12 weeks for your C-section recovery, EDD might approve a different timeframe based on their medical guidelines. That's why checking your claim details for the actual benefit end date is important.

â˘That's great to know about not having another waiting period! I was worried about that. I'll double check what EDD actually approved versus what my doctor certified. Thank you for all your help!

I just went through this exact process in August! My timeline was: - First payment posted: August 3rd - Debit card arrived: August 12th (9 days later) - Last SDI payment: September 14th - Started PFL: September 15th The key is timing your PFL application. I applied for PFL on September 1st (two weeks before my SDI ended) and it worked perfectly - no gap in payments. My advice is to call your doctor's office and confirm exactly what dates they certified for your disability, then apply for PFL about 10-14 days before that end date.

â˘Thank you for sharing your experience! It's so helpful to hear from someone who just went through it. I'll call my doctor tomorrow to confirm the exact dates they certified and then plan my PFL application accordingly.
