Applying for new SDI claim - need advice and tips
Hey everyone, I'm looking to apply for a new SDI claim. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or advice on what to expect? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and could use some guidance.

I just went through this last month! It's not too bad, but there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Make sure you have all your medical documentation ready. They'll ask for it. 2. Be prepared to wait. The process can take a few weeks. 3. Double-check all your info before submitting. One small mistake can delay everything. 4. Keep a record of all your communications with them. Good luck! Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! How long did it take for you to hear back after submitting your application?

It took about 3 weeks for me to get an initial response. Then another week or so to get approved. So about a month total.

I feel you. It's like they don't want us to actually get the benefits we're entitled to. 🙄

Have you tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through.

Pro tip: Use claimyr.com to get through to a live agent. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. They dial the number, navigate the menu, wait on hold, and then connect you when a real person picks up. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yep, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it worked like a charm. Saved me hours of hold time.

I've used it twice now. Totally worth the $20 imo. Just make sure you're ready when they connect you!

Make sure you have your doctors info handy when you apply. They'll ask for it and it can slow things down if you don't have it ready.

Anyone know if theres a way to check the status of your application online? Or do you have to call?

You can check online! Go to the SDI website and look for the 'Claim Status' section. You'll need your claim number though.

Just a heads up, they might ask for additional info after you submit. I had to send in extra medical records. Don't panic if this happens, its normal!

Good to know, thanks for the tip! Did they contact you by mail or email for the additional info?

They sent me a letter in the mail. Took about a week to arrive after I submitted my initial application.

Has anyone had experience with appealing a denied claim? Asking for a friend...

I appealed last year. It's a process, but don't give up! Get all your documentation together and be persistent. It took about 6 weeks for me to get a decision on the appeal.

Thanks for the info! Did you use a lawyer or handle it yourself?

I did it myself, but I've heard some people have success with lawyers. Depends on how complicated your case is, I guess.

Quick question - does anyone know if you can apply for SDI if you're self-employed? Or is it only for people with traditional jobs?

StarSailor
You can, but you need to have paid into SDI through the Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) program. It's not automatic for self-employed folks.

PSA: Don't forget to report any income you receive while on SDI! Even part-time or gig work. They can come after you for overpayments if you don't.
