Applying for new SDI claim - need advice and tips

It took about 3 weeks for me to get an initial response. Then another week or so to get approved. So about a month total.

Have you tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through.

yeah, i've tried everything. early morning, late afternoon, nothing works. its ridiculous

You can check online! Go to the SDI website and look for the 'Claim Status' section. You'll need your claim number though.

They sent me a letter in the mail. Took about a week to arrive after I submitted my initial application.

I appealed last year. It's a process, but don't give up! Get all your documentation together and be persistent. It took about 6 weeks for me to get a decision on the appeal.

I did it myself, but I've heard some people have success with lawyers. Depends on how complicated your case is, I guess.

You can, but you need to have paid into SDI through the Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) program. It's not automatic for self-employed folks.
