Will CalWORKs backpay for twins born in November? First payment coming in February
I gave birth to my twins in November 2024 and applied for CalWORKs the same month. Just got a notice that my first payment won't start until February 2025. Will they give me backpay for December and January, or am I just out those months? This is my first time on Cash Aid and I really needed that money for the holidays with newborns. My caseworker wasn't clear when I asked her - just said something about 'effective dates' but didn't explain if I'd get the missed months. Has anyone dealt with this before? The twins' father doesn't provide any support so I'm trying to figure out my budget.

Yes, you should receive retroactive benefits back to the date of your application in November. CalWORKs benefits are supposed to start from the date you applied, not when they process your case. When they issue your February payment, you should see separate retroactive payments for December and January too. Make sure to check your BenefitsCal account or your EBT card after your February payment posts to confirm you received all three months. If you don't see the back payments, call your worker immediately to ask about them.

•Thank you! Do you know if they'll come as one lump sum or separate payments? I'm worried because I've already gotten behind on some bills waiting for this to start.

•That's good to know! I was so confused because the notice just showed the February date and nothing about the previous months.

The county is TERRIBLE about explaining retroactive benefits. They always act like they're doing you a favor when it's literally required by law to pay you from your application date. I went through this exact situation in 2023 and had to call like 10 times before someone actually explained it properly. One thing to check - did you provide all verification documents (birth certificates, IDs, etc.) when you first applied in November? If there were delays because they were waiting for docs, they might only backdate to when your application was "complete" not when you first submitted it.

•I submitted everything except the twins' birth certificates because I was still waiting to receive those. I finally got those sent in around mid-December. Does that mean they'll only backpay to December instead of November?

In California, CalWORKs benefits should be paid from the date of application if you're found eligible, even if there are delays in processing. Since you applied in November, you should receive retroactive benefits for December and January. However, there's an important exception: if your application was "pending verification" because you hadn't provided all required documents, benefits may only start from when your application was complete (when you submitted the birth certificates in December). You should definitely call your worker to confirm exactly what date they're using as your "beginning date of aid" and whether retroactive benefits will be issued automatically or if you need to request them specifically.

•I've been trying to reach my worker for days but can't get through. The automated system just keeps disconnecting me after 30+ minutes on hold. Is there a specific thing I should ask for when I finally reach someone?

Try using Claimyr to get through to your county worker faster - it's been a lifesaver for me with CalWORKs issues. The service calls the county for you and calls you back when they reach a real person. Saved me hours of hold time when I had a similar backpay question. Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE or go to claimyr.com. Seriously worth it when you're trying to figure out something important like retroactive benefits for your babies.

•Never heard of this before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate to talk to someone at this point.

•Yes, it works! I used it twice - once for my SAR7 issue and again when my benefits got discontinued by mistake. Both times I got through to a worker in under an hour instead of spending all day calling.

So is this your first time on Cash Aid? You should know they have this 48-month time limit thing where you can only get CalWORKs for 48 months total in your life. Just thought I'd mention it since you said you're new to it. Not sure if this is helpful but I wish someone had told me that when I first applied lol.

To answer your question from earlier - backpay usually comes as a separate lump sum payment. And specifically, you should ask your worker about your "beginning date of aid" and confirm whether you'll receive "retroactive benefits" or "restoration of aid" for December and January. Also, since you mentioned this is your first time on CalWORKs and you have newborn twins, make sure to ask about: 1. The Special Needs Diaper Allowance - extra money for children under 3 years old 2. CalWORKs childcare benefits if you plan to work or go to school 3. Exemption from Welfare to Work requirements - you may qualify for an exemption with newborn twins These additional benefits can make a big difference in your budget!

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I had no idea about the diaper allowance. I finally reached a worker today and they confirmed I'll get payments back to mid-December when my application was complete with the birth certificates. They're sending the retroactive payment separately next week!

That's great news that you finally got through to a worker and got confirmation about the retroactive payments! It's so frustrating how unclear they are about these things initially. Make sure to also ask about that diaper allowance Grant mentioned - with twins that extra money can really help with all those diapers you'll be going through. And definitely look into the childcare benefits for when you're ready to work or do school later. Having twins is expensive but there are more resources available than most people realize!

•Congratulations on your twins! I'm so glad you got through to someone and got that confirmation about the retroactive payments. As someone new to the CalWORKs system, it's really helpful to see all the additional resources people have mentioned here. The diaper allowance sounds like it could be a real lifesaver with twins - I can only imagine how many diapers you're going through! Hope everything works out smoothly with your payments and that you can get caught up on those bills.

Congratulations on your twins! I went through something similar when my daughter was born - the waiting and uncertainty about backpay is so stressful when you have a newborn (let alone two!). I'm really glad to see from your updates that you got confirmation about the retroactive payments starting from December. One thing I wanted to add that might help other new parents reading this - when you do get your retroactive payment, it might show up on your EBT card as multiple separate deposits rather than one lump sum. Don't panic if you see weird amounts posting over a few days - that's normal. I thought something was wrong when mine came in like 3 different chunks but it all added up correctly. Also, definitely follow up on that Special Needs Diaper Allowance! With twins you're probably going through 16-20 diapers a day right now. Every bit of extra help makes a difference, especially during those first few months when everything is so overwhelming.

•Thank you for sharing your experience with the multiple deposits! That's really helpful to know because I would have definitely panicked seeing random amounts posting. I'm already going through about 20 diapers a day with both babies so that diaper allowance is definitely something I need to ask about when I call back. It's been overwhelming trying to figure out all these programs while taking care of newborn twins, but everyone here has been so helpful with explaining things the county worker didn't mention.

I'm so happy you got the confirmation about your retroactive payments! As a newer CalWORKs recipient myself, I know how confusing and stressful it can be when workers don't explain things clearly upfront. The fact that you'll get backpay to mid-December when your application was complete is great news. Just wanted to add one more thing that helped me - when you do call back about the diaper allowance, also ask if there are any other "special needs" allowances you might qualify for with newborn twins. Sometimes there are clothing allowances or other one-time benefits for families with multiple infants that they don't automatically tell you about. Also, keep all your receipts for baby expenses - sometimes if there are delays in getting benefits or allowances, you can get reimbursed for certain necessities you had to buy while waiting. Good luck with everything and congratulations on your twins!

•This is such great advice about asking for other special needs allowances and keeping receipts! I hadn't thought about the possibility of reimbursement for expenses while waiting. With twins, I've already spent so much on formula, diapers, and basic necessities that it would be amazing if some of that could be covered retroactively. I'm definitely going to ask about clothing allowances too when I call back - they're growing so fast and I'm constantly needing new onesies and sleepers. Thank you for taking the time to share these tips!

Congratulations on your twins! I'm really glad to see that you got through to a worker and confirmed you'll be getting retroactive payments back to mid-December. That's such a relief when you're dealing with newborn expenses! I wanted to share something that might help - when I first started on CalWORKs with my baby, I found it really helpful to keep a notebook with all the dates and what different workers told me. Sometimes you get different answers from different people, so having it written down helped me advocate for myself better. Also, since everyone's mentioning the diaper allowance - definitely push for that! With twins going through 20 diapers a day, that extra money will make a huge difference. And don't be afraid to ask your worker to explain exactly what you qualify for in simple terms. They work for you, not the other way around. Best of luck with everything!

•That's such good advice about keeping a notebook! I wish I had thought of that from the beginning - I've already gotten different answers from different people and it's been confusing to keep track of what I was told. I'm definitely going to start writing everything down from now on, especially since I'm still learning about all these different programs and benefits. And you're absolutely right about advocating for myself - sometimes I feel intimidated by the system but these are benefits I'm entitled to. Thank you for the encouragement and practical tips!
