Do CalWORKs SAR7 recertifications require bank statements? (6-month vs. annual review)

I'm confused about what paperwork I need for my upcoming CalWORKs recertification. This is just my 6-month SAR7 review coming up next week, not the annual redetermination. My cousin told me they asked for her bank statements at her 6-month review, but I thought that was only for the annual recert? I only have online banking and my printer is broken, so getting statements would be a huge hassle right now. Can someone who's been through the 6-month review recently tell me if they actually check bank statements or is that just for the annual renewal? I don't want to risk my Cash Aid getting delayed because I'm missing documents.

For the SAR7 (6-month report), they typically don't require bank statements unless something has changed with your income or resources. The semi-annual report focuses mainly on income changes, household composition changes, and address changes. Bank statements are more common for the annual redetermination (RE form/SAWS 2). However, if you reported a change in income or started a new job since your last report, they might ask for verification including bank statements. Did you have any income changes recently?

No, my income situation is exactly the same since I applied. I'm still doing my WTW hours at the same place. I was just worried because my cousin scared me saying they're asking for bank statements from everyone now because of some new policy. I'm gonna be so relieved if I don't need to deal with getting those printed out!

they might ask for bank statements if they think somethings off with ur income... happened to me once when i got a small inheritance and didn't report it (big mistake). but normally for SAR7 they just want you to report if anythings changed for income or who lives in ur house. annual recert is the BIG one where they want EVERYTHING

This is terrible advice! You should ALWAYS report ANY changes in income or resources to your CalWORKs worker, even for small amounts. Unreported income can lead to an overpayment that you'll have to pay back, or in serious cases, can be considered fraud. The Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) requires you to report if your income exceeds the limit for your household size, and any resources like inheritances need to be reported within 10 days, not just at your SAR7 or annual recertification.

Your cousin might be confusing the annual redetermination with the SAR7. I've been on CalWORKs for 3 years and they only ask for bank statements during the annual recert. The SAR7 is basically just a form asking if anything changed with your income, assets, housing costs, or household members. BUT... if you answer YES to any changes, then they might ask for verification of those changes, which could include bank statements. If nothing changed, you should be fine without them.

at my last sar7 they actually DID ask for my bank statement but my worker said it was because someone in my household started a new job so they needed to verify everyone's income. if you didn't have any changes you should be fine

That's good to know. No one in my household has had any job changes, so hopefully I won't need them. I was stressing out about this all week!

Each county can have slightly different verification procedures for CalWORKs, but generally the SAR7 (Semi-Annual Report) doesn't require bank statements unless you're reporting changes. The annual redetermination (RD/RE) is when they do a complete review of eligibility including assets. However, I should mention that your county worker has the right to request verification at any time if they have a reason to believe there might be unreported income or resources. This is called "mid-period verification" and is allowed under CalWORKs regulations. If you're concerned about getting documents in on time, I recommend calling your county office and asking specifically what they'll need for your upcoming review. This will save you stress and prevent any benefit delays.

I tried calling all morning yesterday but kept getting disconnected after waiting for like 45 minutes. Is there a better way to reach them? I'm in Los Angeles County if that makes a difference.

If you're having trouble reaching LA County DPSS by phone, I highly recommend trying Claimyr. I was in the same situation last month - kept getting disconnected after waiting forever. Claimyr connected me to a real person at the CalWORKs office in about 15 minutes instead of hours of trying and getting disconnected. They basically call and wait on hold for you, then call you when they have a worker on the line. Saved me so much frustration! You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE or just go to claimyr.com. Definitely worth it when you need to talk to someone before your SAR7 is due.

I second this recommendation! Used it twice now for getting through to my worker about WTW participation hours. So much better than spending all day trying to call.

To directly answer your question: For the regular SAR7 mid-year report, bank statements are NOT typically required if: 1. You haven't reported any changes to income 2. Your household composition hasn't changed 3. You haven't received any new assets (like a vehicle, inheritance, etc.) 4. You don't have substantial changes to your resources The annual redetermination (SAWS 2) is when they do a complete review of all eligibility factors including resources and assets. That's when bank statements are routinely requested. If your worker does unexpectedly ask for bank statements, you can usually provide online printouts - they don't have to be official statements mailed from the bank. Most workers will accept screenshots or printouts from your online banking showing your balance and recent transactions.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I'll still try to get through to my worker to confirm, but this makes me feel a lot better. And good to know they'll accept printouts from online banking if needed.

One more thing I should mention - while bank statements aren't usually required for the SAR7, make sure you're still accurately reporting ALL income on the form. The Semi-Annual Report is how they track if you're staying under your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT). If you go over your IRT at any point, you're required to report it within 10 days, not just wait for your SAR7. If your county worker notices deposits in your bank account that don't match what you've reported as income (if they do request statements), that could lead to an overpayment situation or even a fraud investigation in serious cases. Just make sure everything you report is accurate and you should be fine!

Just wanted to add that if you're really worried about it, you can also check your MyBenefits CalWIN account online or through the app. Sometimes it will show what documents they're requesting for your upcoming SAR7 review. I've found that really helpful to see exactly what they want before the appointment. Also, if you do need to submit any documents last minute, you can usually upload them through the MyBenefits portal or drop them off at any DPSS office - you don't have to mail them. Hope your review goes smoothly!

That's such a helpful tip about checking MyBenefits CalWIN! I completely forgot about that. I'm going to log in right now to see if there's anything listed for my upcoming SAR7. The upload feature would be perfect too since I can get online banking screenshots if needed but getting to a physical office is tough with my work schedule. Thanks for mentioning this!

I just went through my SAR7 review last month and didn't need bank statements. My worker only asked for my paystubs since I'm still working the same WTW job. The form itself is pretty straightforward - it basically asks if your income, household size, or living situation changed. If you answer "no" to all the changes, you usually won't need additional verification documents. One thing that helped me was having my SAR7 form filled out completely before my appointment. They have the form available on the DPSS website if you want to look at the questions ahead of time. Since you mentioned nothing has changed with your income or WTW participation, you should be good to go without the bank statements. Just make sure to submit it on time - that's the most important part!

This is really reassuring! I'm glad to hear from someone who just went through it recently. I'll definitely check the DPSS website for the SAR7 form so I can review the questions beforehand. That's a great tip about having it filled out before the appointment - it'll probably make the whole process go much faster. Since my situation is exactly the same as when I first applied, hopefully my experience will be similar to yours. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!

I've been on CalWORKs for about 2 years now and have gone through several SAR7 reviews. In my experience, they only ask for bank statements during the SAR7 if you've reported changes to your income or household situation. Since you mentioned your income and WTW situation are exactly the same, you should be fine without them. The key thing is being honest on the SAR7 form - if nothing has changed, just mark "no" for the change questions and you typically won't need additional documentation. I'd still recommend trying to reach your worker through Claimyr like others mentioned, just to double-check what they need from you specifically. But based on what you've shared, bank statements shouldn't be required for your 6-month review. Also, don't stress too much about your cousin's experience - every case is different and workers sometimes request different things based on individual circumstances. Focus on getting your SAR7 submitted on time and you should be good!

This is really helpful advice! I'm feeling much more confident about my upcoming SAR7 now. It's good to hear from someone with multiple SAR7 experiences that they typically don't ask for bank statements when nothing has changed. I'm definitely going to try using Claimyr to reach my worker just to be 100% sure, but knowing that being honest about no changes usually means no extra documentation needed is a huge relief. I was really stressing about trying to get bank statements printed when my situation hasn't changed at all. Thanks for the reassurance!

I just want to add from my recent experience - I had my SAR7 review two weeks ago and they definitely did NOT ask for bank statements. My worker just went through the form with me asking about income changes, household changes, and address changes. Since I answered "no" to all of them, she just had me sign the form and that was it. The whole appointment took maybe 10 minutes. I think your cousin might be mixing up her annual redetermination with the SAR7, or maybe she had reported some changes that triggered additional verification requests. If your income and living situation are exactly the same, you should be totally fine without bank statements. Just make sure you submit your SAR7 on time - that's way more important than worrying about documents you probably won't even need!

That's exactly the kind of reassurance I needed to hear! A 10-minute appointment sounds so much better than what I was imagining. I was picturing having to bring a whole stack of documents and answer tons of detailed questions. It's really helpful to know that when nothing has changed, the process is actually pretty straightforward. I feel like I can stop stressing about this now and just focus on making sure I get the form submitted on time. Thanks for sharing your recent experience - it's so much more helpful than trying to guess what might happen!

I'm a new CalWORKs recipient and just got my first SAR7 notice in the mail. Reading through everyone's responses here has been so helpful! I was also worried about needing bank statements since I don't have a printer and would have to go to the library to print them out. Based on what everyone is saying, it sounds like as long as I haven't had any income or household changes, I should be okay without them. My situation is pretty simple - I'm doing my WTW hours at the same placement, no one has moved in or out of my house, and my income is exactly the same as when I first applied. One question though - when you fill out the SAR7 form, do they ask for specific dollar amounts of your current income, or just whether anything changed? I want to make sure I'm prepared with the right information when I go in for my appointment next week.

Welcome to CalWORKs! For the SAR7 form, they typically ask both - whether anything changed AND for current income amounts. You'll need to report your current gross monthly income from all sources, even if it's the same as before. So even though you're at the same WTW placement, you should still know your exact monthly income amount to put on the form. I'd suggest having your most recent paystub or income information ready, just in case they want to verify the amounts you report. But like everyone else said, if nothing has actually changed, you probably won't need bank statements or other documents. Good luck with your first SAR7 - sounds like you're well prepared!
