Company closing down - Do I need to report job loss to CalWORKs immediately?

Hey everyone, I just found out our whole company is shutting down permanently in 2 weeks. I've been on partial CalWORKs for about 8 months while working part-time (20hrs/week) at this place. My question is - do I need to report this job loss right away or can I wait until my next SAR7? I know we're supposed to report when income goes OVER the IRT, but what about when it suddenly drops to zero? I'm worried because my Welfare to Work plan was based on this job counting for my participation hours. Will they make me start all over with job search requirements? Has anyone dealt with reporting sudden unemployment?

Yes, you should report it right away even though it's a decrease in income. Call your worker as soon as possible because this is considered a 'change in employment status' which affects your WTW plan. Don't wait for your SAR7 because they'll need to adjust your participation requirements and might be able to increase your cash aid amount since you'll have zero income. Make sure to get something in writing from your employer about the closure to provide as verification.

Thanks for this! Do you know if I also need to report it on BenefitsCal or just call my worker? And will my benefits automatically increase or do I need to specifically ask for that?

when my job closed last year i waited til my sar7 and got in trouble for not reporting sooner!!! they said i was suppose to tell them within 10 days and almost discontinued me for not cooperating with the program!!! dont make my mistake, call asap!!

OMG that's scary! Did they actually cut your benefits off or did they just threaten to? I'm always paranoid about reporting stuff wrong.

Im not sure why everyone saying report right away, its only required to report when ur income goes ABOVE the IRT limit midperiod not below? If ur income decreases you can wait til the SAR7. Atleast thats what my worker said when my hours got cut last month?

This is actually incorrect for CalWORKs when it involves a complete job loss. While most income changes can wait for the SAR7 (except going over IRT), a complete change in employment status affects your Welfare to Work participation requirements, which is why it needs to be reported within 10 days. If you just had reduced hours but kept the same job, that can wait for the SAR7 reporting period.

You ABSOLUTELY need to report this ASAP! The county is so frustrating with their ridiculous rules - they want income increases reported right away but also major decreases too! When my company downsized last year, I didn't report it for 3 weeks and got a threatening letter saying I could lose benefits for not cooperating with program requirements. They made me come in and re-do my entire WTW plan and I had to sign all these job search forms. The system is designed to trip us up I swear.

Have you been trying to get through to your worker? When my employment situation changed last month, I spent 4 days trying to reach someone at the CalWORKs office. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a real person in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE After connecting, my worker updated my WTW plan that same day and adjusted my benefits for the job loss. Much better than waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected repeatedly.

I haven't tried calling yet since I just found out yesterday, but I definitely will. Thanks for the tip about that service - the CalWORKs office in my county is impossible to reach sometimes.

Here's what you need to do step by step: 1. Report the job loss immediately (within 10 days) - this is required for CalWORKs when your employment status completely changes 2. Submit verification of the company closure (a letter from your employer or notice of layoff) 3. Ask for a meeting with your WTW case manager to update your participation plan 4. Request supportive services for job search activities (transportation assistance, etc.) 5. If you're interested in education/training instead of immediate job search, ask about the CalWORKs educational opportunities When you report the job loss, your benefits should increase automatically for the next month since your income will be zero. You may also qualify for expedited CalFresh if you're not already receiving the maximum amount.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't know there might be educational opportunities - I've actually been wanting to get my medical assistant certification. Will definitely ask about that when I talk to my worker.

btw dont 4get to apply 4 unemployment 2!! u can get calworks AND unemployment at the same time, they dont count against each other like most people think

That's correct - unemployment benefits are counted as income for CalWORKs, but you can receive both. Your CalWORKs grant will be reduced based on your unemployment amount, but you'll still likely end up with more total money than just receiving CalWORKs alone. Definitely apply for UI right away!

I just wanna say I'm really sorry about your job loss. This happened to me in January and it was really stressful. Hang in there! ❤️
