CalWORKs income net limit for family of 3 in 2025 - what's the current threshold?

Can someone tell me what the current income net limit is for CalWORKs for a family of 3? I started working part-time (about 25 hrs/week) and I'm worried I might be over the threshold now. My case worker is impossible to reach and I need to know ASAP if I should be reporting this income change or if I'm still under the limit. Don't want to get in trouble for not reporting if I need to! Thanks for any help.

For a family of 3, the current CalWORKs net income limit is $1,591 per month for 2025. But remember, not all your income counts - they subtract a $500 earned income disregard and then 50% of your remaining earnings when calculating if you're eligible. So you can actually earn quite a bit more than the limit before you're actually ineligible. Also, you ALWAYS need to report income when you start a new job regardless of the amount. And if your income goes over the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) on your last Notice of Action, you have to report within 10 days even between SAR7 reports.

Thank you! My last NOA says my IRT is $2,285 - so I think I'm still under that with my part-time job. I'll report it on my next SAR7 which is due in 2 months. That should be ok right?

Just to clarify what the previous poster said - you need to report NEW employment within 10 days of starting, regardless of how much you're earning. Don't wait for your SAR7. You should call your worker or submit the info through BenefitsCal right away. Your new job income might not put you over the limit with the disregards, but you still need to report it now.

Oh shoot, I've already been working for almost 3 weeks! I thought I only had to report if I went over my IRT. Will I get in trouble for not reporting sooner?

i was in ur same situation last year!! they found out i was working when they did some check and i didnt report it fast enough and they gave me an overpayment notice and i had to pay back like $780. dont make my mistake girl CALL THEM TODAY

Try using Claimyr to get through to your CalWORKs worker. It's a service that waits on hold for you and calls you back when a real person answers. I used it last month when I couldn't get through about my WTW hours and it saved me literally hours of waiting. The system is rigged against working parents! They make the rules SO COMPLICATED that normal people can't understand them, then punish you when you make a mistake. My sister got an overpayment notice for $2,300 because she didn't report her seasonal job fast enough. The whole thing is designed to trap people!!!

It's not a trap - the rules are actually designed to help working parents by letting you keep more of your earnings while still getting assistance. But they do need to know about your job to calculate benefits correctly. Report changes on time and you'll be fine.

Just to add some clarification since there's confusion in this thread - the income eligibility thresholds and reporting requirements are two different things: 1. For ELIGIBILITY, a family of 3 has a net income limit of $1,591, but with the earned income disregards ($500 + 50% of remainder), you can earn up to about $3,682 gross per month and still be eligible. 2. For REPORTING, you must report: * New jobs within 10 days (regardless of income amount) * Income that exceeds your IRT (within 10 days of going over) * All income changes on your semi-annual SAR7 Hope that helps clear things up!

Yes, with the earned income disregards, you can earn quite a bit before losing eligibility completely. Don't turn down those shifts! Your cash grant will gradually decrease as you earn more, but it's always better financially to work more hours when you can.
