Qualified for CalFresh Homeless Assistance but confused about rent/deposit coverage - anyone had success?
After months of couch surfing, I finally found an apartment I can afford ($1,750/month) but I'm broke after paying application fees. My CalFresh worker mentioned something about 'Homeless Assistance' that might help with first month's rent and security deposit ($3,500 total). Has anyone actually received this help through CalFresh? My interview is next Tuesday and I'm terrified of saying something wrong and getting denied. The apartment manager needs an answer by Friday next week or they'll move to the next applicant. Do I need special documentation? How long did it take to get approved? My worker seemed rushed and didn't explain much.

•Wait really? The CalFresh worker specifically mentioned it when I told her about my housing situation. Now I'm even more confused. I don't have kids so does that mean I'm not eligible at all??

The previous comment isn't entirely accurate. There are TWO different programs with similar names. CalWORKs does have a Homeless Assistance program for families with children, but there's also a separate CalFresh Homeless Assistance program for individuals without children who are currently homeless and receiving CalFresh benefits. For CalFresh Homeless Assistance, you might qualify for help with rent/deposit IF you're already receiving CalFresh AND meet the definition of homeless (which includes couch surfing). The exact benefits vary by county though, and some counties have very limited funds. Bring documentation to prove: 1) Your current homeless status 2) The rental agreement details 3) Verification that you qualify for the apartment (approval letter) 4) Any income documentation Be very clear that you're asking specifically about the CalFresh Homeless Housing Assistance program, not CalWORKs.

•I work for the county and want to clarify something important here. There is NO specific "CalFresh Homeless Assistance program" for individuals. CalFresh is just a food benefit program. What the worker might have been referring to is: 1) The Housing Support Program (HSP) which some counties have 2) Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program 3) Local county homeless prevention funds These aren't technically part of CalFresh, but some counties have CalFresh workers who can refer you to these resources. Each county handles this differently.

•Thank you both for your responses! This is already more info than my worker gave me. I'm in Los Angeles County if that helps. @profile4 - so should I specifically ask about those three programs you mentioned at my appointment? I'm super worried about saying the wrong thing and missing out on help that could literally keep me from being on the streets again.

I actually received this help in LA County last year! It's NOT through CalFresh directly (as others mentioned), but many CalFresh workers can connect you to the right department. In LA County, it's called the Housing and Disability Advocacy Program (HDAP) or sometimes the Problem Solving Funds program. Bring EVERYTHING to your appointment: - ID - The rental agreement - Landlord's contact info & W9 (ask them for this in advance) - Bank statements - Proof of your housing search efforts - Documentation of your current living situation Be prepared that the process often takes 2-3 weeks. You might want to be honest with your landlord about potentially getting assistance but needing a bit more time. Many will work with you if they know help is coming. One tip - I found it nearly impossible to get updates by phone when my application was processing. I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual person instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a service that gets you connected with a live worker (you can see a video of how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8). Totally worth it when you're dealing with something time-sensitive like housing.

•THANK YOU for this detailed info! I've never heard of HDAP but I'll definitely ask about it specifically. The landlord seems pretty flexible but they've had so many applicants that I'm worried about losing the apartment if I ask for too much time. I'll check out that Claimyr thing - the phone system is a nightmare. I tried calling yesterday and gave up after 45 minutes on hold.

Hey just wanna give you a heads up that I tried to get this help last month and it was a NIGHTMARE!!! The caseworker kept sending me back and forth between departments and nobody knew what I was talking about. Ended up getting told I needed to apply for General Relief first (which takes forever) and by then I'd lost the apartment. The whole system is designed to make us fail I swear.

•Omg same!! My worker was clueless and kept confusing it with the family homeless program. I lost my apartment too. Ended up sleeping in my car for 2 months before I found a room to rent. The system is BROKEN.

•This is exactly what I'm afraid of!! I'm sorry that happened to you both. I'm going to print out information about these programs before I go so at least I can show them exactly what I'm talking about. Really can't afford to lose this apartment.

Update for LA County specifically: The program that might help you is the Homeless Prevention Program through DPSS. It CAN cover first month's rent and security deposit in some cases. Call the DPSS Customer Service Center at 866-613-3777 and specifically request information about "homeless prevention funds" for housing assistance. You need to: 1) Already be CalFresh eligible 2) Meet the homeless definition 3) Have secured housing that you can maintain long-term with your current income 4) Have documentation of all of the above Response time varies but can be expedited in urgent situations with pending move-in dates. Make sure to emphasize your timeline with the landlord waiting.

•Thank you so much for this specific information! Just tried calling that number and of course... busy signal. I'll keep trying. My appointment is tomorrow morning so hopefully I can get through before then. Question - my income is mostly gig work (DoorDash/Instacart) - will that be an issue for proving I can maintain the apartment? I make enough but it's not consistent.

•I've heard those are nearly impossible to get right now with years-long waiting lists, but I'll definitely ask! Even if it's just help with the deposit and first month, that would be enough to get me on my feet.

Just following up - how did your appointment go? Were you able to get any assistance?

•Just got back! It was so much better than I expected. The worker knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned HDAP and the Homeless Prevention Program. They took all my documentation and said I should hear back within 3-5 business days. The landlord agreed to hold the apartment until next Wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you all SO MUCH for your help - I went in prepared because of your advice instead of confused and anxious.

That's such great news that your worker was knowledgeable and helpful! It makes such a difference when they actually know the programs. Really hoping you get approved - sounds like you did everything right by going in prepared with all the documentation. Please keep us updated on what happens! Your experience will definitely help other people in similar situations who find this thread.

•So glad to hear your appointment went well! As someone who's been through the housing assistance process myself, I know how nerve-wracking it can be when you're facing homelessness and dealing with tight deadlines. It sounds like you really did your homework and came prepared - that makes all the difference. The fact that your worker was familiar with HDAP is a great sign. In my experience, when the worker knows the programs well, the process tends to move faster. Fingers crossed you get good news soon! And yes, definitely update us - your story could be exactly what someone else needs to read when they're in a similar situation.
