Is there an age minimum for CalFresh food benefits? My kindergartener didn't get EBT card
I just got approved for CalFresh benefits last month, and I received my EBT card with March benefits loaded. My caseworker said everyone in our household would be included, but when I checked the paperwork, it looks like only me and my two older kids (ages 8 and 12) are actually receiving benefits. My 5-year-old daughter who's in kindergarten doesn't seem to be getting any food assistance amount. Is there some kind of age minimum for kids to qualify for CalFresh? I thought children of any age were eligible as part of the household. Do I need to call my county worker to add her, or is this normal? Our benefits are about $625/month for the three of us, but I was expecting it to be higher with all four family members.

There's definitely no age minimum for CalFresh - children of any age (even infants) should be included in your household's benefit calculation as long as they live with you and you purchase/prepare food together. Something's wrong if your 5-year-old isn't included. Check your approval notice - it should list all household members who were approved. If she's missing, you need to contact your county office ASAP to correct this error.

•Thank you! I just double-checked my approval notice and you're right - she's not listed as a household member at all. I must have missed that when reviewing everything. I'll call them tomorrow morning to get this fixed.

are you sure she's actually not included? they don't give separate EBT cards to kids, everyone in household shares the same benefits amount. maybe the total benefit already includes her but it's just not itemized that way on your paperwork??

•The paperwork lists each household member and their individual benefit amount, then shows the total. My older kids each have an amount listed, but my youngest isn't even on the household member list. So I'm pretty sure she wasn't counted at all.

This is definitely a county error. There's no age minimum for CalFresh - I've helped many families with infants who receive benefits. Your benefit amount is calculated based on household size, income, and expenses. With a kindergartener missing from your case, you're likely receiving less than you should be. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call your county office and explain that a household member was omitted from your case 2. Ask them to add your daughter and recalculate benefits 3. Request retroactive benefits for any months she was incorrectly excluded Be prepared for long wait times when calling though. The CalFresh phone lines are notoriously busy, especially in the mornings.

•this happened to me too! they somehow forgot to put my youngest on our case. took forever to get someone on the phone but when i did they fixed it pretty quick and gave us back benefits for the months he was missing. definitely worth calling!!

Did you include your 5-year-old on the original SAWS 2 application? Sometimes they miss people if the paperwork isn't clear. And make sure when you call that you get the worker to go back and give you the extra benefits from when you first applied! They can issue those retroactively once they fix your household count.

•I definitely listed her on the original application. I actually applied through BenefitsCal online and triple-checked that I included everyone. I'll make sure to ask about the retroactive benefits - thank you for that tip! I didn't realize they could go back and adjust previous months.

when you call be ready to wait FOREVER... i tried calling my county office last week and was on hold for 1 hour 45 minutes before getting disconnected!! so frustrating when you have kids and can't just sit around all day waiting on hold

•Try using Claimyr if you don't want to wait on hold! It's a service that calls the CalFresh office for you and then calls you back when a real person answers. I used it last month when I had a similar issue with a missing household member and it saved me from spending hours on hold. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Totally worth it when you have little kids and can't be stuck on the phone all day!

Based on what you've described, adding your 5-year-old to your case should increase your monthly benefits significantly. For a household of 4 with your approximate income level (based on your current benefit amount), you might expect to receive around $800-850/month in 2025 instead of $625. The exact amount depends on your income and deductions, but it's definitely worth pursuing the correction.

•That would make a huge difference for us! $175-225 more per month would really help with our grocery bills. I'm definitely calling first thing tomorrow.

•While errors are frustrating, they're usually just mistakes rather than intentional. Most CalFresh errors happen because caseworkers have very high caseloads - sometimes hundreds of cases per worker. Always double-check your notices to catch these kinds of errors. The system isn't perfect, but they do correct mistakes when you bring them to their attention.

did you get WIC too? sometimes people think kids dont get calfresh if they already get WIC but thats wrong you can get both

•No, we don't have WIC. I did apply a while back but my older kids were too old at that point. But my daughter should definitely be on CalFresh regardless since she lives with us and we all eat together. Seems like it was just an error on their part.

One more thing - when you call, make sure you're ready with your daughter's full name, date of birth, and Social Security number. Having all this information ready will help them process the change faster. And definitely ask them to review your case for any other errors while they're at it. Sometimes one mistake means there might be others too!

•That's great advice, thank you! I'll have all her information ready when I call. Fingers crossed it gets resolved quickly.
