Got mystery check from Sacramento Finance Dept labeled 'IRS refund' - CalFresh related?

Just got a really confusing check in the mail yesterday from the CA Finance Department in Sacramento. The invoice says it's an "IRS refund" but I haven't filed any special tax forms? I'm on CalFresh benefits and wondering if this is related to that somehow? Maybe some kind of benefit adjustment or tax credit I didn't know about? It's for $347 which would really help right now, but I'm nervous about cashing it if it's a mistake. Has anyone else on CalFresh gotten something like this recently? I don't want to have to pay it back if it's not really meant for me.

same thing happend to me last month! i got a check for like $420 and was so confused. turned out it was the state earned income tax credit that i qualified for bc of my low income. if you worked last year even part time you might have qualified. its legit dont worry

Oh wow, I did work part-time last year! I didn't realize there was a state tax credit I could get. Does this affect my CalFresh eligibility at all? Do I need to report it as income on my next SAR7?

This is likely the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) or the Young Child Tax Credit if you have children under 6. These are legitimate tax credits the state provides to low-income workers. Here's what you should know: 1. It does NOT count as income for CalFresh eligibility 2. You do NOT need to report it on your SAR7 form 3. Tax refunds/credits are exempt resources for 12 months after receipt You can cash it without worrying about your benefits. If you're concerned, you can call your county office and ask them to verify, but these tax credits are designed to help the same population that receives CalFresh without affecting those benefits.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I was really worried it might mess up my benefits. I do have a 4-year-old, so maybe it's that Child Tax Credit. Such a relief to know I can actually use this money!

While it's always good to be cautious, a check from the California State Controller's Office with proper state watermarks and security features is legitimate. The state does send tax credit refunds separate from regular tax refunds sometimes. You can verify by calling the State Controller's Office at the official number on their website (not any number printed on the check itself).

This is probably related to tax credits, not CalFresh directly. I work at a tax preparation nonprofit and we see this all the time. California has several credits for low-income residents that get processed separately from regular tax refunds. Look at the memo line of the check - does it specifically mention CalEITC or YCTC? Those are the California Earned Income Tax Credit and Young Child Tax Credit. It's completely separate from your CalFresh benefits and doesn't need to be reported as income for benefit calculations. Tax refunds and credits are exempt from resource considerations for 12 months after you receive them. If you want to verify it's legitimate, call the State Controller's Office directly at their official number (find it on the .gov website, not from the check).

I've been trying to reach the Controller's Office to verify a similar check I got, but can't get through after hours on hold. Anyone have experience with Claimyr? I saw a video about it (https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8) and it seems like they can help get through to government offices quickly. Their website claimyr.com says they can connect you to a real person. Might try it tomorrow if I still can't get answers.

I GOT ONE TOO!!!! But mine was different amount ($289) and it came right after I did my taxes. The stupid thing is I called CalFresh office about it and they had NO IDEA what I was talking about and transferred me 3 times before hanging up on me. Typical government BS. I ended up just cashing it and nothing bad happened. That was 2 months ago.

That's so frustrating they couldn't even tell you what it was for! But good to know you were able to cash it with no problems. I'm going to go ahead and deposit mine tomorrow.

You might want to check if you filed taxes last year and if you claimed the Earned Income Credit. If your income was low enough to qualify for CalFresh, you probably qualified for the California version of the EIC too. They sometimes process these separately from regular tax refunds. I'm wondering though - did you use a tax preparation service? Sometimes they identify credits people miss and file amendments. The state might be sending you money from an amended return you didn't even know about! Check the date on the check too - sometimes these can take FOREVER to process.

I did use a free tax prep service at the community center last year! Maybe they found something I qualified for. The check is dated pretty recently though - just two weeks ago. I'm going to call tomorrow to confirm but feeling much better about this now.

It depends on your income and whether you filed taxes. The CalEITC is for people who earned under approximately $30,000 last year. If you filed taxes and qualified, you should have received it either as part of your regular tax refund or as a separate check like OP received. If you didn't file taxes for 2024 yet, you should - you might be eligible for both state and federal credits even if you don't owe any taxes.

Update: I called the number on the CA State Controller's website this morning and after 45 minutes on hold (ugh), they confirmed it's legit! It's from the CalEITC like many of you said. Thanks everyone for your help! Going to treat my kid to new shoes with part of it since his old ones are falling apart.

Glad you got confirmation! Just remember to keep the documentation for this payment with your financial records. While it doesn't affect CalFresh eligibility, it's always good practice to keep records of any government payments you receive for at least 3 years in case questions ever come up during recertification or other benefit reviews.
