EBT card missing for 6 weeks - replacement never arrived after multiple requests to CalFresh
Just venting because I'm at my wit's end! I've been approved for CalFresh since December but STILL haven't received a working EBT card. My benefits started accumulating in January (I can see them online), but the original card never showed up. Called the county in February and they said they'd send a replacement. Three weeks later - nothing. Called AGAIN last week and they swore they'd expedite a new card, but my mailbox is still empty! Meanwhile I've got $1,875 in benefits I can't access and my grocery budget is completely wiped out. Has anyone else dealt with this nightmare? Does the mail carrier steal these or something? Should I try going to the county office in person? I'm starting to think my address is cursed! 😫

•Omg I didn't even think of that! I did move from apartment 304 to 340 in the same building back in November. Maybe they have the old unit number? Thanks for the tip, definitely calling tomorrow to check!!

This is unfortunately a common issue. There are several things you should do immediately: 1. Verify your mailing address is correct in the system (including apartment number as someone mentioned) 2. Ask if they can see in their system when the card was actually mailed (sometimes they're marked as "sent" but weren't) 3. Request they note your case for "in-person emergency card pickup" - many county offices can print a temporary card while you wait 4. Make sure your case isn't marked as "homeless" or "general delivery" which can cause mailing issues Also, your benefits will remain available when you finally get your card - CalFresh benefits currently stay in your account for 274 days before expiring, so you haven't lost any money.

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! I had no idea about the in-person emergency card option - that might be my best bet at this point. And that's a relief about the benefits not expiring soon. I was worried I'd lose the January amounts.

I'd definitely recommend going to the county office in person. When I had EBT card issues last year, I spent weeks trying to resolve by phone with no success. When I finally went in person, they were able to print me a temporary card on the spot that worked until my permanent one arrived. Just bring your ID and case number if you have it.

This EBT card situation sounds incredibly frustrating! I went through something similar trying to reach my worker. After hours on hold and multiple disconnections, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live person at CalFresh in minutes. They have this neat demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. I was skeptical but it actually worked when I needed to resolve my lost card issue. Might save you some frustration while you try to get this sorted out!

•Thanks for sharing this! I've been on hold for over an hour today already. I'll check out that site - anything to avoid more time listening to that awful hold music. Did they help you get a replacement card faster?

The EBT card delivery system is a JOKE! I've had THREE cards supposedly sent to me over 6 months and none arrived. When I finally got through to a supervisor, she admitted they've had issues with the vendor that prints and mails the cards. Some batches never even left the facility but were marked as "sent" in their system!! The whole thing is BROKEN and they don't care because we're just poor people trying to eat. 😡

•Wow that's infuriating! I was giving them the benefit of the doubt thinking it was a mail issue. Now I'm wondering if the cards were ever actually sent. Did you ever get your card?

I had this exact issue! Check to see if you can get an EBT card through BenefitsCal - they recently added an option to request replacement cards there instead of calling. Also make sure you're periodically checking your SAR7 due dates and recertification. If you missed a report or recertification deadline, they might have stopped adding benefits even if your account still shows active.

•Thanks for the BenefitsCal tip! I just logged in and found the replacement card section. I submitted another request through there - fingers crossed this one actually works. My recertification isn't until November so that shouldn't be the issue, but good reminder to stay on top of that.

my neighbor told me u can get a temporary card at the farmers market?? has anyone heard about this? my cousin got one somehow

•This is partially correct but a bit confused. Some farmers markets have EBT processing stations where you can use an existing card, but they can't issue new cards. Your cousin might have gotten a Market Match card or CalFresh promotional materials that looked like a card, but those aren't actual EBT cards with your benefits on them. Only county offices and sometimes certain community partner organizations can issue real replacement EBT cards.

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of 😫 Seems like going to the office might be the only solution. Such a hassle when I work 9-5 and the office is only open those same hours.

I feel your pain! I went through the exact same thing last year and it took forever to resolve. Here's what finally worked for me: I called the EBT customer service line (1-877-328-9677) instead of the county office. They were able to see that my cards had been "returned to sender" multiple times due to an address issue I didn't even know about. They expedited a new card with corrected info and I had it in 3 days. Also, if you have a trusted friend or family member, you might be able to have the card sent to their address temporarily - just make sure to update your address properly in the system first. Don't give up, that $1,875 is rightfully yours!
