Can I pick up my CalFresh EBT card in person? Already approved but need benefits ASAP

I got approved for CalFresh on April 12th after our household lost income in March, but I STILL haven't received my EBT card in the mail! It's been over two weeks now and we're really struggling. Does anyone know if there's a way to pick up an EBT card in person at the county office? I can't wait another week for mail delivery - my kids are asking for food I can't provide right now. Already tried calling the county but got stuck in the automated system for 45 minutes before getting disconnected. Really desperate at this point.

You can absolutely pick up an EBT card in person! I had the same problem last year. Call your county office and specifically request an "emergency over-the-counter EBT card" - use those exact words. Tell them you were approved but haven't received your card and are experiencing a food emergency. They should be able to issue one while you wait. Bring your ID and case number if you have it.

Thank you SO MUCH! Do you know if I need an appointment? Or can I just walk in during business hours?

0 coins

Yes, you can get an EBT card same-day at most county offices, but policies vary by county. Some require appointments, others accept walk-ins. Make sure to bring your ID, proof of address, and know your case number if possible. Important: only the case head of household can pick up the card. Also, your benefits should be available immediately once you get and activate the card - no waiting period since you've already been approved.

0 coins

This is so helpful, thank you! I am the head of household so that works. Just to confirm - once I pick up the card, I'll have access to benefits from April 12 (my approval date), right?

0 coins

That's correct! All benefits from your approval date should be available on the card once activated. If your issuance date was April 12th, those benefits will be on there, and if we're past your May issuance date, those should be loaded too. The card itself is just the access method to benefits already approved for your case.

U might want 2 call first before going down there. I went 2 the Pomona office without calling and had 2 wait 4 HOURS just 2 be told they dont do same day cards at that location!!! Had 2 go to the main office downtown instead and wasted a whole day. Some counties do it some don't.

0 coins

Oh wow, thanks for the warning! That would have been a disaster with my kids in tow. I'll definitely call first to confirm.

I tried getting a replacement card last year when mine was stolen and was told they don't do emergency cards anymore because of COVID. Had to wait for mail delivery. But that was in Alameda County. It might be different now in 2025 or in your county.

0 coins

This information is outdated. As of 2025, all counties in California have resumed in-person emergency EBT card issuance. COVID restrictions on this ended back in 2023. Some county offices may have limited hours for card issuance, but the service is definitely available again statewide.

Just wanted to add that I've found a service called Claimyr that can help you get through to a real person at the CalFresh office without waiting on hold forever. I used it when I had a similar emergency situation with my benefits. Basically it calls the office for you and then calls you back when a real person answers. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 showing how it works. Much better than getting disconnected after waiting on hold.

0 coins

That sounds like exactly what I need! Just tried calling again and got disconnected after 30 minutes. Will check this out - thanks!

Everyone here is giving you bad information! You CANNOT pick up EBT cards in person anymore in California. This changed with the new BenefitsCal system rollout. All cards MUST be mailed for security reasons. I work with families dealing with this system every day through my job. The only exception is domestic violence cases where mail isn't safe.

0 coins

This is incorrect. The BenefitsCal system actually improved emergency card issuance options. While standard procedures do use mail delivery, emergency over-the-counter cards are still available at county offices for hardship situations. I just helped a client get one last week in Sacramento County. Please don't spread misinformation that could prevent people from accessing food benefits they urgently need.

0 coins

Maybe Sacramento has different rules then because here in San Bernardino they flat out told us they don't do in-person cards anymore except for DV cases. Sounds like policies vary by county more than I realized. Sorry if I was wrong about it being statewide.

UPDATE: Success! I called using that Claimyr service (which worked amazingly well) and got through to an actual person who told me I could come to the main county office with my ID and case number. Just got back with my emergency EBT card in hand! All my benefits from April were on there as promised. The worker said normally cards arrive within 7 business days, but there was a mailing system issue affecting several cases including mine. Thanks everyone for your help!

So glad it worked out! Nothing worse than being approved for food benefits but not being able to access them. Thanks for updating us!
