Called the P-EBT number a month ago, told to wait 4 weeks but still nothing - what's the REAL number to call?

I'm totally at my wit's end with this P-EBT situation. I have 3 kids in elementary school who should've received their P-EBT cards for 2025 by now. I called what I thought was the right number back in early March, and the representative told me to 'just wait 4 weeks' for processing. Well, it's been over 5 weeks now and still NOTHING in the mail! My neighbor's kids already got theirs 3 weeks ago! I'm starting to think I called the wrong number or something. Can someone please share the ACTUAL number to call about P-EBT issues? And has anyone else experienced these long delays? My kids qualify for free lunch at school so I know they should be getting these benefits. The extra $950 per child would really help our family right now.

The official P-EBT customer service number is 877-328-9677. They're open Monday-Friday, 6am-8pm. Just be aware that this number handles ALL of California, so wait times can be pretty long. When you call, make sure you have your children's student ID numbers and the exact spelling of their names as registered at school - this helps them look up your case faster. P-EBT distribution for 2025 has been really uneven across different school districts. Some got cards in February while others are still rolling out now in April. If your neighbor's kids attend the same school, definitely mention that when you call, as it indicates your cards should have been processed in the same batch.

Thank you! That's the same number I called before, so at least I know I wasn't calling the wrong place. I'll try again tomorrow morning with all their info ready. Do you know if there's a way to check the status online instead? Their automated system was super confusing last time.

i had the same thing happen with my kid!! waited 6 weeks after they told me 4 and nothing. finally i called AGAIN and they said my address was wrong in their system even tho the school had it right. make sure u double check your mailing address with them when u call

Omg I didn't even think of that! We moved last year but updated our address with the school. Maybe that info didn't transfer to the P-EBT system? Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely ask about this!

I work at a community resource center and we've been hearing about P-EBT delays constantly this year. Here's what's actually happening: the system is completely overwhelmed with the expanded eligibility for 2025. The cards are generated in batches by school district, but if there's ANY issue with a student's record (name mismatch, address issues, eligibility questions), their card gets kicked to a manual review queue that's severely backlogged. The 877-328-9677 number is correct, but honestly, getting through to someone who can actually help is incredibly difficult right now. Keep trying, but be prepared to call multiple times. Make sure to call early in the morning (right when they open at 6am) for the shortest wait times. Also, it's worth checking if your school district has a P-EBT liaison - some larger districts have designated staff who can help troubleshoot these issues locally.

This is super helpful, thank you! I had no idea about the manual review queue - that could definitely be what's happening. I'll try the 6am call tomorrow. Do you know if there's any way to escalate the case if I still can't get help?

This happened to me too! So frustrating. I spent WEEKS trying to get through on that number. Finally I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual person in like 25 minutes instead of me having to redial for days. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 When I finally got through, turns out my kids' cards were already mailed but to our old apartment 🤦‍♀️ They had to reissue them, but at least I knew what was happening!

ooooh i'm checking this out!! i have to call them AGAIN about my other kid's card and i cant deal with being on hold all day

Thank you for this! I'm definitely at the point where I'd try anything to avoid calling that number again and getting disconnected after waiting forever. I'll check out that video!

The P-EBT cards and CalFresh are NOT the same program even tho it's all EBT!!! P-EBT is through the schools and CalFresh is through the county. I made that mistake last year and wasted so much time calling the wrong places. If you already get regular CalFresh your P-EBT will come separate, they don't add it to your regular EBT card.

We don't get regular CalFresh, just the school lunch program and P-EBT. But thanks for pointing this out - I've definitely seen people get confused about this!

This whole P-EBT system is a JOKE. I called that number 12 TIMES last month and either got disconnected or was on hold so long I had to hang up for work. They do this ON PURPOSE to discourage people from getting benefits they're entitled to!!! My kid's school says they submitted everything correctly months ago but the state keeps giving different excuses. Meanwhile my rent just went up AGAIN and these benefits would actually help! I finally got through last week and was told my case is "under review" with no timeline. RIDICULOUS!!!

While the delays are definitely frustrating, I can assure you they're not intentionally trying to withhold benefits. The P-EBT program was expanded significantly for 2025, and the administrative systems simply weren't scaled to handle the volume. It's a genuine processing backlog, not a deliberate attempt to deny eligible families. That said, your frustration is completely valid, and I hope your case gets resolved soon.

Have you checked your mail carefully? My kids' P-EBT cards came in really plain white envelopes that looked like junk mail, I almost threw them away! The return address just says "State of California" not P-EBT specifically. Also, did you check if your school actually has your kids enrolled in the free lunch program correctly? Sometimes that's where the breakdown happens.

I've been checking our mail obsessively, but that's good to know about the plain envelopes. I'll double check with the school Monday about their free lunch status, though I'm pretty sure it's correct since they've been getting free meals all year. Thanks for the suggestions!

I just wanted to follow up on this thread. After you speak with someone at P-EBT, ask for a confirmation number or case number for your call. Document everything - who you spoke with, what time, what they told you, etc. If you need to call back again, having this information makes a huge difference in getting help. Also, in some situations, reaching out to your State Assembly Member's office can help. They have constituent services teams that can sometimes cut through red tape when benefits are significantly delayed. This is especially helpful if you've made multiple attempts to resolve through the normal channels without success.

This is great advice, thank you! I hadn't thought of contacting my Assembly Member, but I'll definitely do that if I can't get resolution after another attempt. I'll be sure to take detailed notes of my call tomorrow morning.

dont forget to ask them about any back benefits too!!! if ur kids qualified all year they should get the full amount even if the cards are late

That's a relief! I was worried we might lose some of the benefits because of the delay. Thanks for mentioning this!

I went through this exact same situation last year! After multiple failed attempts with the main number, I ended up contacting my county's social services office directly. They have P-EBT coordinators who can actually look up your case status and sometimes fix issues on the spot. For what it's worth, when I finally got my kids' cards, they were backdated to include all the benefits from when they should have originally been issued. So don't worry about losing money due to the delay - you'll get the full amount once it's resolved. Also, if you're comfortable sharing what school district you're in, that might help others here who are experiencing similar delays. Some districts seem to have more issues than others with the data transfer to the state system.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My daughter should have gotten her P-EBT card weeks ago. I called the 877-328-9677 number three times and keep getting different information each time. The first person told me to wait 2-3 weeks, the second said there was a "system update" causing delays, and the third couldn't even find my daughter's case in their system. What's really frustrating is that other families at her school got their cards over a month ago. I'm wondering if there's a specific issue with certain batches or if some kids' records got stuck somewhere in the process. Has anyone had luck getting help through their county office instead of the state number? I'm in Orange County and thinking about trying that route next. At this point I'm willing to drive somewhere in person if it means actually getting answers instead of being told to "wait a little longer" every time I call.

I'm so sorry you're going through this too! It's incredibly frustrating when you get different answers every time you call. Based on what others have shared here, it definitely sounds like certain batches of records are getting stuck in manual review. I'm actually planning to call first thing tomorrow morning (right at 6am when they open) with all my kids' info ready, plus I'm going to ask specifically about address verification since someone mentioned that was their issue. Maybe try the county route too - it sounds like some people have had better luck that way than with the main state line. If you do end up going in person somewhere, please let us know how it goes! I'm getting desperate enough to try that myself if tomorrow's call doesn't work out. We shouldn't have to jump through this many hoops for benefits our kids are entitled to.

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now! Called that 877-328-9677 number about 3 weeks ago and was told my son's P-EBT card would arrive "within 10 business days." Well, it's been 15 business days and still nothing. Meanwhile, kids in his class have had their cards for over a month! What's really getting to me is that when I called back yesterday, they couldn't even locate the notes from my previous call. It's like I never called at all! The rep yesterday said my case is "pending verification" but couldn't tell me what needs to be verified or how long that takes. I'm definitely going to try calling right at 6am tomorrow after reading everyone's advice here. Going to have his student ID, our current address, and his exact name spelling ready. If that doesn't work, I think I'll contact our Assembly Member's office like @dc08b98faee1 suggested. My family really needs these benefits and it shouldn't be this hard to get help that our kids are legally entitled to! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this mess.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! The "pending verification" thing sounds exactly like what @618db9ad3f82 mentioned about records getting stuck in manual review. It's ridiculous that they can't even keep track of previous calls - no wonder so many of us are getting nowhere! I'm planning to try the 6am call strategy tomorrow too. Maybe we should all try calling at the same time and see if we can overwhelm them into actually helping us! 😅 But seriously, the Assembly Member contact idea sounds really promising if the direct route fails again. Hang in there - based on what others have shared, it sounds like once they actually find and fix the issue, the cards come pretty quickly and with all the back benefits included. Still doesn't make this whole process any less frustrating though!
