Applied mid-August but no emergency CalFresh allotment showing on EBT - will it still come?

I finally got my CalFresh EBT card in the mail today after applying back in mid-August (around the 15th). When I spoke with my eligibility worker during the interview, she specifically mentioned I would receive the emergency allotment for August since I applied before the end of the month. I got approved within a week and was told benefits would be backdated, but when I activated my card and checked the balance, there's only the regular September amount loaded (about $275 for just me). Nothing from August is showing up at all! I called the EBT customer service number but got stuck in that automated system. Will I still get the August amount? Does it come separately or am I missing something? Really counting on that extra money for groceries this month.

Emergency allotments for CalFresh ended back in April of last year, so I'm confused about what your worker told you. They don't give those anymore since the pandemic emergency declaration ended. What they probably meant was your prorated benefits for August based on when you applied, which should definitely be on your card already.

Wait seriously? The worker definitely used the words "emergency allotment" when we talked! Now I'm super confused. So there's no extra benefit amount? I was counting on getting August AND September benefits...

What you're entitled to is prorated benefits for August based on your application date. Since you applied mid-month, you should receive benefits for approximately half of August. These should have been loaded to your EBT card by now, separate from your September benefits. To check if they're there: call the EBT number on the back of your card and listen to the last few deposits. Sometimes they load separately and you might have missed it. If they're truly not there, you need to contact your county office directly because it could be a system error.

thats exactly what happend to me lol. applied aug 3, got approved aug 10, called to check balance and only saw sept amount. had to wait on hold 4ever with the county. turns out they forgot to issue my august prorated amount 🙄 took another week but they fixed it

Thank you! I just checked the transaction history more carefully and don't see anything for August at all. Just the one deposit for September. I've been trying to reach my worker but every time I call the county I sit on hold for 45+ minutes and then get disconnected. Is there another way to contact them?

Hey, I went through this exact situation last year! The county offices are completely overwhelmed and their phone systems are terrible. I wasted hours trying to get through about my missing benefits. I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at the county office in less than 10 minutes. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and their website is claimyr.com. It was honestly such a relief after spending days trying to get through on my own. The worker fixed my missing prorated benefits while I was on the phone with them.

Thank you! I'm going to try this because I've already wasted 3 hours today trying to get through to someone. Did you have to provide any verification documents when you finally reached someone about your missing benefits?

They just asked for my case number and verified my identity with some basic info. The worker could see in their system that my August benefits hadn't been issued even though they should have been. Got it resolved in that one call!

i think u need to check ur notice of action letter. it should say exactly what ur eligible for and when. sometimes the computer system takes a few days to catch up with loading benefits. did u try checking the benefitscal website? sometimes it shows pending deposits before they hit ur card

I'll check my NOA again, thanks. I did log into BenefitsCal but it just shows my case is approved - doesn't show any actual benefit amounts or deposit dates. Is there somewhere specific on the site I should look?

To clarify what others have said: 1. Emergency allotments (the extra pandemic benefit amount) ended in March 2023, so that terminology shouldn't have been used by your worker 2. What you ARE entitled to is prorated August benefits from your application date to the end of August. This is standard procedure. 3. These prorated benefits should appear as a separate deposit from your September benefits 4. If they're not showing up, this is an administrative error that needs to be corrected by your county office 5. By law, benefits must be provided within 30 days of application (or 3 days for expedited service if you qualified) Keep documentation of all your attempts to contact them. If you can't resolve this through the call center, you can request a state hearing to appeal the non-issuance of your prorated benefits.

Could it be possible the worker just used outdated terminology? Maybe they meant expedited service but called it emergency allotment out of habit from the pandemic days?

That's possible. Terminology sometimes varies between counties and workers. What matters is what the official Notice of Action states regarding benefit amounts and issuance dates. The OP should refer to that document as the definitive source of what benefits to expect.

THE SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME!!!!! the county people are HORRIBLE at their jobs i swear. u have to specifically ASK for the august benefits and DEMAND to talk to a supervisor. dont let them tell u they cant help cause THEY CAN. its YOUR MONEY that YOU ARE ENTITLED TO BY LAW! they tried to tell me i wasnt eligible for my back benefits too but i kept calling until i got someone who actually knew what they were doing. dont give up!!

this is a bit extreme lol. most workers are actually trying to help but they're super overworked. but i agree don't give up, just be polite when u call and explain the situation

i was polite the FIRST FIVE TIMES i called! after that i realized being nice doesnt get results with these people. u have to be FIRM and know ur rights or they will walk all over u. just my experience 🤷‍♀️

check ur mail really careful too. sometimes they send u a letter saying u need to provide more info before they release benefits. my roommate almost missed one of these and it was hidden between junk mail. if u miss the deadline they can deny ur benefits or delay them. also make sure ur case hasnt been assigned to a different worker - that happened to me and i was calling the wrong person for weeks lol

I've been checking my mail every day! Nothing asking for more verification. The approval letter came about 10 days ago with my EBT card just arriving today. It's so frustrating not being able to reach anyone to ask about this.

After the clarification in your comments, this is definitely an administrative error. Your prorated August benefits should have been issued along with or before your September benefits. To resolve this efficiently: 1. Write down your case number, application date, and approval date before calling 2. Be clear that you're missing your prorated August benefits that should have been issued based on your mid-August application date 3. Request that they check the benefit issuance system specifically for August 4. If they confirm the error, ask for the estimated date when the correction will be processed 5. Get the worker's ID number or name for your records If you still can't reach someone by phone, you can also visit your local county office in person. Sometimes that's faster than calling.

Thank you for such clear instructions! I'm going to try calling once more tomorrow morning (I heard that's the best time to get through) and if that doesn't work, I'll visit the office on Friday. I've written down all the details you mentioned so I'm prepared.

I went through something similar when I applied in July! One thing that helped me was calling the EBT customer service line (the number on the back of your card) and pressing 0 to speak to a person instead of going through the automated system. They can see ALL your deposits including pending ones that haven't hit your card yet. When I did this, they could see my prorated benefits were actually issued but took an extra 2 business days to show up on my card. If they don't see any August deposit at all, then you definitely need to contact your county office. But try the EBT line first - it's way easier to get through than the county phones! Also keep your approval letter handy when you call because it should show exactly what benefit amounts you're entitled to receive.
