Missing Emory University financial aid package with FAFSA deadline approaching - anyone else?
I'm freaking out a bit over here. My son submitted his FAFSA for Emory in November and got his SAI score in January, but we still haven't received ANY financial aid award information from them. The May 1st deposit deadline is coming up super fast and we have to make a decision without knowing what aid he's getting! Has anyone else had their financial aid package from Emory come through recently? Are they just really behind this year or should we be concerned something went wrong with our application? We've tried calling the financial aid office but it's impossible to get through to a real person. The automated system just says 'processing' but that's been the status for weeks now.

•So frustrating! Have you tried contacting them? If so, any luck getting through?

This is unfortunately common with Emory this year. Their financial aid office is severely backlogged for 2025-2026 aid packages. My niece just received hers yesterday after submitting in October. I recommend sending an email to finaid@emory.edu with your student ID in the subject line and explaining your deposit deadline concerns. They've been prioritizing those with approaching deadlines. Also, you can request a deposit deadline extension specifically due to missing financial aid information - many schools are granting these this year due to FAFSA delays.

•Thank you SO much for this information! I'll email them right away with his ID number. Do you know if they typically reply to emails faster than answering phone calls? I'm worried about timing with the deadline so close.

•In my experience, email response has been 3-5 business days recently, which is still faster than reaching someone by phone. Make sure to clearly state the May 1st deadline in both the subject line and email body to help get it prioritized. If you don't hear back within 3 days, follow up with another email referencing your first one.

I work in financial aid at another university, and I can tell you this is happening at many schools this year. The FAFSA processing delays at the federal level have created a massive backlog at virtually all financial aid offices. Emory is actually ahead of some schools I know of. A few important points: 1. You should absolutely request a deposit deadline extension. By law, schools must accommodate this when financial aid packages are delayed. 2. Double-check that you've completed ALL verification requirements if selected. Many students don't realize they were selected for verification and their aid is held up waiting for additional documents. 3. Make sure your SAI (Student Aid Index) shows correctly on studentaid.gov and that all schools are listed in your FAFSA. 4. If you're comparing aid packages, remember that private universities like Emory often provide substantial institutional aid beyond federal aid, so it's worth waiting for their package if Emory is a strong consideration.

•Thank you for this detailed response! I just checked and we haven't been selected for verification (thankfully). His SAI looks correct on studentaid.gov and Emory is definitely listed in his FAFSA. We'll request that deposit deadline extension right away. Emory is actually his top choice but we can't commit without seeing the numbers first.

•I went through this EXACT same thing with Emory last year!!! It was so stressful. They literally sent the financial aid package 3 DAYS before the deposit deadline! But the good news is they gave us a really generous package with grants and some work-study (not just loans). Their institutional aid ended up being way better than the other schools my son was considering. So try not to stress too much - they're just super slow with processing.

The financial aid system is completely BROKEN this year! The FAFSA delays have thrown everything into chaos. My daughter applied to 7 schools and so far only 2 have sent financial aid packages. It's CRIMINAL that they expect families to commit thousands of dollars without knowing what aid they'll receive! Emory is notorious for being slow with financial aid even in normal years. Last year my nephew had to put down a deposit at another school while still waiting for Emory's package, and then when it finally came (a week AFTER the deadline), he lost his deposit when he switched to Emory. The whole system is designed to extract more money from desperate families!

If anyone needs to actually get through to a human at Federal Student Aid for FAFSA issues, I finally found a solution after being hung up on 6 times. There's a service called Claimyr that gets you through to a real FSA agent quickly. I was skeptical but it actually worked - got through in 10 mins when I'd been trying for days. The agent helped me resolve my son's FAFSA verification issues that were holding up all his aid packages. There's a quick video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and the site is claimyr.com. Might help if you need to verify your FAFSA status is correct before contacting Emory.

•Thank you for this suggestion! Our FAFSA seems to be processed correctly, but I'll keep this option in mind if we run into any federal aid issues.

Just wanted to update - we JUST got our Emory package TODAY after weeks of waiting! Email finaid@emory.edu with your student ID and explain the May 1st deadline. Put "URGENT: MAY 1 DEADLINE" in the subject line. We did this Monday and got the package today (Thursday). They're prioritizing deadline cases. Good luck!!

•That's amazing news! I just sent an email with the subject line you suggested. If you don't mind me asking, was the package worth the wait? We're trying to decide between Emory and two other schools that have already sent their offers.

•Yes, very worth it! They covered about 70% of the cost with grants and scholarships (not loans). Much better than the other packages we received. Their institutional aid is really good if your SAI qualifies. They also included a nice merit scholarship based on my daughter's test scores that we weren't expecting.

totally off topic but why is everyone so obsessed with Emory? my cousin went there and said it was just ok? like the campus is pretty but atlanta is super hot and humid and the workload was crazy. just sayin maybe not getting fin aid is a blessing lol

•This is really dependent on the student and their academic interests. Emory has exceptional programs in pre-med, business, and several humanities fields. It's consistently ranked among the top 25 universities nationally. That said, every school has its pros and cons, and fit matters more than rankings. The financial aid discussion is relevant regardless of personal opinions about the school.

One more piece of advice from someone who works in financial aid: when you do receive your package, if it's not what you expected or doesn't make Emory affordable, don't hesitate to appeal. This is especially true if: 1. Your financial situation has changed since filing the FAFSA 2. You have better offers from comparable institutions 3. You have unusual expenses not captured in the FAFSA Most schools, including Emory, have a formal appeal process. In my experience, about 40% of appeals result in additional aid, with an average increase of $3,000-7,000. The key is to document everything thoroughly and be specific about what would make attendance possible.

•This is excellent advice - thank you! If their offer doesn't make attendance feasible, we'll definitely pursue the appeal process. Would you recommend mentioning competing offers from other schools in the appeal?

•Yes, absolutely mention competing offers, especially from peer institutions (other private universities of similar ranking). Provide copies of those aid awards when you submit your appeal. Emory, like most selective private universities, doesn't want to lose strong candidates due to financial reasons and often has reserve funds specifically for matching competitive offers. Just make sure to frame it as "making an informed decision" rather than trying to "negotiate" - the tone matters in appeals.

I'm in the exact same situation! My daughter applied to Emory and we've been waiting since January for her financial aid package. Reading through all these comments is actually really reassuring - sounds like they're just extremely backed up this year. I'm definitely going to send that email with "URGENT: MAY 1 DEADLINE" in the subject line like @Jungleboo Soletrain suggested. Has anyone had luck calling the admissions office instead of financial aid? Maybe they can put pressure on the FA office or give us a timeline? This waiting game is so stressful when we're trying to make such a big decision!

•I tried calling the admissions office last week and they basically said they can't do anything about financial aid timelines - they're completely separate departments. The admissions counselor was sympathetic but said financial aid is handling their own backlog and admissions can't push them. She did suggest the same thing everyone else has mentioned - emailing finaid@emory.edu with the May 1st deadline in the subject line. I think that's really our best bet at this point. Hopefully we'll both hear back soon!

I'm going through the exact same nightmare with Emory! My son submitted everything in December and we're still waiting. After reading all these comments, I feel so much better knowing it's not just us. The stress of the May 1st deadline without knowing the financial picture is keeping me up at night. I'm definitely sending that email with "URGENT: MAY 1 DEADLINE" in the subject line first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and advice - this community is such a lifesaver during this crazy process! Fingers crossed we all get our packages soon 🤞

•You're so right about this community being a lifesaver! I was feeling completely alone in this situation until I found this thread. It's crazy how many of us are in the exact same boat with Emory. I'm going to send that urgent email too - seems like that's gotten the best results for people. Hopefully by next week we'll all have our packages and can finally make our decisions! Good luck to you and your son! 🤞

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! My daughter submitted her FAFSA in early December and we're still waiting on Emory's financial aid package. It's so relieving to see we're not alone in this - I was starting to think something went wrong with our application. The May 1st deadline stress is real! I've been comparing offers from her other schools but Emory was her top choice, so we really need to see their numbers. Based on all the advice here, I'm going to email finaid@emory.edu tomorrow with "URGENT: MAY 1 DEADLINE" in the subject line and also request a deposit deadline extension just in case. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - knowing this is a widespread issue with their processing delays makes me feel so much better!
