Is negative SAI (-1500) good for FAFSA? How does it affect financial aid amount?
Just got my FAFSA results and my SAI is -1500. Is this good or bad? I'm totally confused about what this number means. Do negative numbers mean I'll get more financial aid? Or is higher better? This is my first time applying and I'm trying to figure out if I should be celebrating or panicking right now. My parents aren't much help since they didn't go to college. Thanks!

A negative SAI is definitely good news! The Student Aid Index (SAI) replaced the old EFC, and the lower your number, the more financial need you have according to the FAFSA calculation. Since yours is negative, you'll likely qualify for the maximum Pell Grant amount and potentially additional need-based aid from your school. Negative numbers basically mean the formula recognizes you have significant financial need.

•OMG thank you!! So the more negative the better? Mine's -1500 so does that mean I'll get a lot? How much is the max Pell Grant now?

Lower SAI = more aid potential. Simple as that. The new FAFSA uses SAI instead of EFC but same basic idea - it measures how much your family can supposedly contribute. Negative SAI means you qualify for max Pell (around $7,400 for 2025-26) and probably other need-based aid depending on your school's cost of attendance. Congrats!

•This isn't quite right. The max negative SAI is -1500, so OP is literally at the maximum possible financial need level for FAFSA. It doesn't go lower than -1500 even if your situation would mathematically calculate lower.

a negative sai is like hitting the jackpot!! your getting maximum pell grant which is awesome. my brother got -750 last year and got tons of grants. the more negative the better!!!

•To clarify - there's a limit to how negative SAI can be. The minimum is -1500, which is what the original poster has. This is the most favorable SAI possible for financial aid purposes. The system won't assign values below -1500 even if the formula would calculate a lower number.

I had a negative SAI last year and got decent aid but then they RANDOMLY selected me for verification and made me submit like 10 extra documents! Make sure you check your FAFSA portal regularly because they don't always email you about verification requests and you could lose all your aid if you miss the deadlines. The system is designed to trip people up I swear.

•Oh no, that sounds stressful! I'll definitely keep checking my portal. Did you end up keeping your aid amount after verification? I'm worried they might change mine.

SAI replaces the old EFC (Expected Family Contribution) in the 2024-2025 FAFSA and beyond. The scale goes from -1500 (maximum need) to 999,999 (minimum need). With -1500, you'll qualify for: - Maximum Pell Grant ($7,395 for full-time enrollment in 2025-2026) - Maximum consideration for need-based institutional aid - Priority for campus-based aid (FSEOG, Federal Work-Study) - Subsidized Federal Direct Loans (government pays interest while in school) Each school will still calculate your specific aid package based on their Cost of Attendance minus your SAI.

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the subsidized loans part. Do I need to do anything special to make sure I get all these different types of aid or does it happen automatically once they see my SAI?

When I had a negative SAI I tried calling the financial aid office at my college to see what it meant and was on hold FOR THREE HOURS before getting disconnected!!! Happened twice!!! So frustrating when you just need basic info.

•Try Claimyr if you need to reach Federal Student Aid by phone. They'll hold your place in line and call you back when an agent is available. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. I used it last month when I needed to fix an error on my SAI calculation and it saved me hours of hold time. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

congrats!! negitive SAI is super good. i had -1200 last year and got full pell plus some state grants and my uni gave me extra funds to. you'll probly get the max aid but it depends on the schools cost too. sometimes i still had to take loans even with good SAI

•This is an important point. Even with the best possible SAI (-1500), your total aid package depends on each school's Cost of Attendance and available institutional aid. Apply to multiple schools and compare their financial aid offers before deciding where to enroll. Some schools meet 100% of demonstrated need while others might leave significant gaps.

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers! I'm feeling a lot better knowing that my negative SAI is actually good news. I'll definitely keep an eye out for verification requests and compare financial aid packages from different schools. Really appreciate all the advice!

Just wanted to add that you should also look into state-specific aid programs! With your -1500 SAI, you'll likely qualify for additional state grants depending on where you live. Many states have their own need-based programs that stack on top of federal aid. Also, don't forget to check if your schools offer institutional grants - some private colleges are really generous with aid for students with high financial need like yours. Make sure to submit your FAFSA to all the schools you're considering so they can build your complete aid packages!

•Great point about state aid! I hadn't even thought about that. Do you know if there's an easy way to find out what state programs are available? I'm in California if that helps. Also wondering - do I need to apply separately for state grants or do they automatically consider me once I submit FAFSA?
