How to edit information on FAFSA after submission? Urgent deadline question

So I submitted my FAFSA last week and just realized I entered my parent's AGI incorrectly (typed $62,500 instead of $56,200). I'm freaking out because this will totally mess up my SAI calculation! The college deadline is in 10 days and I can't afford to lose potential aid. How do I edit this info? When I log into studentaid.gov it only shows my submission is 'processing' but doesn't give me an edit option. Do I need to call someone or start over with a whole new application? Has anyone successfully fixed an income error after submitting?

you can just do a correction. log in, click on the 3 dots by your submitted fafsa and hit 'make correction' - u need to wait until its fully processed tho before the correction option appears

Thanks but I don't see any 3 dots option yet. How long did processing take for you before the correction button appeared?

The processing usually takes 3-7 days before the correction option becomes available. Keep checking your account daily - once it's processed, you'll see a dropdown menu with the correction option. Make sure you're looking at the 2025-2026 application if you have multiple years showing.

I had a similar issue but with my social security number (transposed 2 digits). Had to call FSA to fix it and was on hold FOR.EVER. Took me 4 attempts to even get through and then another 45 min waiting for an agent. The whole system is RIDICULOUS! They should make this easier to fix simple mistakes!!!

OMG same!!! i called like 6 times and kept getting disconnected. such a waste of time when i could be studying instead

Don't panic! This is a common issue. Once your FAFSA is fully processed (3-7 business days), you'll be able to make corrections through your studentaid.gov account. Here's the exact process: 1. Log in to studentaid.gov 2. Navigate to your FAFSA application 3. Select "Make FAFSA Correction" 4. Use your FSA ID to access the form 5. Navigate to the financial information section 6. Update the AGI to the correct amount 7. Re-sign and submit The correction will be processed and your SAI recalculated. Your schools will automatically receive the updated information. For future reference, always have your tax documents in front of you when completing the financial sections to avoid these issues.

Thank you so much for the detailed steps! Do you know if making this correction will delay my application being sent to schools? I'm worried about missing the priority deadline with this extra processing time.

Great question. The correction typically processes within 3-5 days, and schools automatically receive the updated information. However, for your peace of mind, I recommend emailing your schools' financial aid offices to notify them you've submitted a correction. Include your name, student ID if you have one, and briefly explain the correction you made. This creates a paper trail showing you addressed the error before their deadline.

I had to spend HOURS trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid when I needed to update my dependency status information. If you're struggling to get through their phone system, I recently found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an FSA agent in under 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. Saved me so much stress! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

That's actually really helpful if I can't get the correction option to appear soon. Did you find the FSA agents were able to help when you finally got through?

Yes! The agent was super helpful once I finally got connected. She was able to walk me through exactly what form fields needed to be updated and confirmed when my correction was successfully submitted. Definitely worth talking to an actual person if you're worried about meeting the deadline.

Wait a sec...are you SURE the AGI you originally entered is wrong? Double-check your parents' tax returns (line 11 on Form 1040). I thought I made a mistake too, but it turned out I was looking at the MAGI instead of AGI. Sometimes what looks like a mistake actually isn't! The studentaid.gov site compares your entered income to IRS data during processing anyway, so they might flag it if there's actually a discrepancy.

I just triple-checked their 2023 tax return and it definitely shows $56,200 on line 11. I'm 100% certain I made a typo when entering it. Do you know if the system automatically flags discrepancies or if I need to be proactive about fixing it?

The system doesn't always catch everything, especially if the numbers are relatively close. It's designed more to flag major discrepancies (like if you reported $20K but taxes show $60K). Since you're talking about a $6K difference, I'd definitely be proactive about correcting it. The lower AGI could mean more aid eligibility for you.

omg i entered my dads income wrong too but i didnt realize until my SAI came back super high!!! definitely fix it asap. you have to wait for processing then do the correction thing. i think theres also a fafsa app that lets u do corrections from your phone if that helps

Just to clarify, the mobile app was discontinued in July 2023. All FAFSA corrections now need to be done through the studentaid.gov website. Make sure you're using the official site to avoid any issues with your application.

My daughter had this same issue last year when applying for fall 2024. What ended up happening was that when the FAFSA was processed, it actually pulled the correct income info directly from the IRS through the data retrieval tool, so her error was automatically fixed! Did you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when filling out the form? If so, it might correct itself.

I wasn't able to use the Data Retrieval Tool because my parents had an address change since filing their 2023 taxes. That's why I had to manually enter their information from their tax return. I'm definitely going to need to make the correction manually.

One important thing to remember: after making the correction, you AND your parent will both need to re-sign the FAFSA with your FSA IDs. The correction isn't submitted until both signatures are applied. Many students miss this step and wonder why their correction wasn't processed.

Thank you for the reminder! I'll make sure both of us sign it. I've set a calendar reminder to check for the correction option every morning until it appears. Hopefully it processes soon so I can meet my school's priority deadline.
