FAFSA mistake discovered after submission - will they contact me?

I submitted my FAFSA last week and just realized I completely messed up reporting my dad's retirement income (included it when I shouldn't have). I'm freaking out because it probably makes my SAI way higher than it should be! Do the FAFSA people ever reach out if they notice inconsistencies, or am I supposed to somehow fix this myself? I tried calling the Federal Student Aid helpline but got disconnected three times. Is my financial aid completely ruined now or is there still time to correct this? Application deadline for my top choice school is in 3 weeks. 😫

You need to submit a correction ASAP. They won't reach out to you - it's your responsibility to fix mistakes. Log into studentaid.gov, go to your submitted FAFSA, and select the 'Make FAFSA Corrections' option. You'll need to update the section with your father's income. The good news is that properly excluding retirement income should definitely lower your SAI score, potentially qualifying you for more aid. Make sure to submit the correction at least 10 days before your school's priority deadline to ensure it's processed in time.

Thanks for the quick response! I tried to make the correction but I'm getting an error message saying 'Cannot process correction at this time.' Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after initial submission?

Chill out. They're not gonna email u or anything lol. U gotta fix it urself. Had the same thing happen with my mom's income. As long as u fix it before your school starts packaging ur aid ur fine

That's a relief to hear! Did your SAI change a lot after you fixed your mom's income? I'm worried about how this will affect my aid package.

Same boat! I put my stepdad's income in the wrong section and only realized two weeks later. Just submitted the correction yesterday. Fingers crossed it works out for both of us!

Were you able to successfully submit your correction? OP is getting an error message, which could indicate the FAFSA is still in initial processing. The system typically won't allow corrections until the original submission completes processing, which can take 3-5 business days.

Financial aid officer here. No, they will NOT reach out about this type of error. The Department of Education processes millions of FAFSAs - they don't have the capacity to manually review and contact students about potential mistakes like this. You absolutely need to submit a correction yourself once your initial application finishes processing (typically 3-5 business days). Retirement income is excluded from FAFSA calculations, so fixing this will likely significantly improve your SAI score. If your initial FAFSA is still processing, you'll need to wait until it completes before you can submit corrections. Keep trying every day. Also, notify the financial aid offices at your prospective schools about the pending correction so they're aware of the situation.

Thank you so much for this information! Is there any way to know when my initial application finishes processing? The website just says 'submitted' but doesn't give me any other status updates.

You can check the 'My FAFSA' page on studentaid.gov - once it shows 'Processed' rather than 'Processing' or 'Submitted,' you'll be able to make corrections. This typically takes 3-5 business days, but can occasionally take longer during peak periods (like right now).

THIS SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!! I've had to make 4 different corrections to my FAFSA this year and EACH TIME it was because their instructions were confusing as hell!! Why do they make this process so complicated?? And good luck reaching anyone on their helpline - I spent 2.5 HOURS on hold last week before getting disconnected. The whole system is designed to fail students.

I actually had some luck getting through to FSA using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that waits on hold for you then calls when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video demo too: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ After getting through, the agent walked me through all my correction issues in about 15 minutes.

Wait, this is actually a thing? Does it actually work? Might try this because I still need to ask them about parent contribution questions.

Yep! Worked for me when I needed to fix my verification issues. Much better than sitting on hold for hours or getting randomly disconnected.

I'm going to disagree slightly with some comments here. While it's true the Dept of Education won't proactively reach out to you, they DO sometimes select applications for verification where they'll request additional documentation. However, this typically happens later in the process and isn't designed to catch the specific type of error you made. You definitely need to submit that correction yourself once your initial application processes (usually 3-5 days after submission). I recommend downloading the SAR (Student Aid Report) after your correction processes to verify the changes took effect. The SAR will show your calculated SAI score which will help you understand your aid eligibility.

Thank you for the detailed response! I wasn't aware of the SAR - that sounds really helpful. Would you recommend I also email my school's financial aid office to let them know about the correction?

Yes, absolutely contact your school's financial aid office! Most schools have a specific process for reporting FAFSA updates. They might ask you to submit a form or send an email with your student ID and details about the correction. This ensures they'll pull your updated information when packaging your aid.

i had this same exact problem last year lmao. i accidentaly included my moms 401k distribution and it made my SAI way higher. school gave me no money, got rejected from scholarships, ended up having to take a semester off and reapply. definitely get that fixed!!!!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm going to check every day until I can submit that correction.

Just to clarify for everyone: The 2025-2026 FAFSA now includes the Student Aid Index (SAI) which replaced the old Expected Family Contribution (EFC). When reporting parent income, retirement contributions and distributions have specific guidelines. Contributions to retirement accounts generally don't affect your SAI calculation, while qualified distributions used for education expenses are treated differently from other withdrawals. The specific rule the OP needs to focus on is that income from retirement accounts shouldn't be reported as additional income if it was already counted in the AGI on the tax return.

This is exactly why this process is so frustrating! How is a 17-year-old supposed to understand all these tax and retirement details? Most adults don't even understand this stuff. The form should be way more clear about what to include and what not to include.

UPDATE: I was finally able to submit my correction today! The error message went away after 4 days. For anyone else dealing with this issue - just keep checking back every day. Now I'm just nervously waiting to see how much my SAI changes and if it will arrive in time for my school's aid packaging. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Great news! The correction typically takes another 3-5 days to process. Once that's complete, you'll receive an updated SAI. Remember to download your corrected Student Aid Report and notify your schools about the update.

Will do! I already sent emails to my top three schools letting them know about the correction. Fingers crossed this all works out!
