How to fix FAFSA errors while application is still processing?

So I realized I made some pretty serious mistakes on my FAFSA that I submitted last week. I accidentally put my dad's income as $87,000 when it should be $78,000, and I think I also messed up checking the box about having completed my 2024 taxes (I haven't filed yet). My application status shows as 'processing' on studentaid.gov, but I'm freaking out because I don't want them to calculate my aid based on wrong information. Is there a way to correct these errors BEFORE they finish processing my application and determine my eligibility? Will calling help or do I need to wait until it's fully processed to make corrections? I'm worried this will affect my financial aid package and I really need maximum aid for my first year at university.

ur best bet is to wait until it finishes processing then do a correction online. thats what i did when i realized i put my mom as married when shes actually divorced. the processing takes about 3-5 days usually

But won't they already calculate my SAI based on the wrong numbers? That's what I'm worried about. Will schools see the incorrect information before I can fix it?

You actually CAN make corrections while it's still processing, but you need to speak directly with a Federal Student Aid agent. They can put a hold on your application processing while you submit corrections. I highly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to someone quickly - they'll connect you to an FSA agent without waiting on hold for hours. Check out their video demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. I was in a similar situation last month and got my corrections submitted before my SAI was calculated.

The previous advice about waiting until processing completes is incorrect. For income reporting errors, especially ones that could significantly impact your Student Aid Index (SAI), you should try to correct it immediately. Here's the proper process: 1. Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 2. Explain that you submitted incorrect income information and need to request a processing hold 3. They can flag your application for review before the SAI calculation is finalized 4. Once flagged, log into studentaid.gov and submit corrections through the correction process This is especially important for income reporting errors like yours since it could affect your eligibility for need-based aid like Pell Grants.

I tried calling that number last month and was on hold for TWO HOURS before giving up. The system is completely broken! You're better off just waiting for it to process and then doing corrections.

Thank you for this detailed info! I'll try calling them tomorrow. Do you know if there will be any delay in my overall financial aid timeline if I get them to put a hold on processing?

I WENT THROUGH THIS EXACT THING!! I accidentally reported my income as $54k instead of $45k (dyslexia lol) and I panicked. Here's what happened: I DID wait until it processed (took 4 days) and then immediately submitted corrections. My schools DID see the wrong SAI first but I called all my schools' financial aid offices to explain and they were super understanding! They told me they would look at the corrected SAI when it came through. Just make sure you call each school after you submit corrections so they know to look for updated info.

That's really helpful to know! Did your aid package change after you made the corrections? I'm worried this will delay everything and I'll miss out on some aid opportunities.

Yes my aid package changed significantly!! My corrected SAI made me eligible for an additional $2,700 in Pell Grant that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. The correction took about 2-3 days to process after I submitted it. Just stay on top of it and you'll be fine!

Glad it worked for you! I was skeptical at first too but they really do get you through to actual agents quickly.

A follow-up on the process: if your application has already been processed and generated an SAI, making corrections will trigger a recalculation. It's important to note that all schools you listed on your FAFSA will automatically receive the updated information once corrections are processed. However, as another commenter suggested, it's still good practice to contact your schools' financial aid offices to ensure they're aware of the pending correction. For your specific errors: - The income correction from $87k to $78k could significantly impact your aid eligibility - The tax return status is less critical as long as the income figures are accurate The most important thing is to address this quickly, whether that means catching it before processing completes or making corrections immediately after.

Just wanted to update everyone - I managed to get through to FSA using the Claimyr service and they put a hold on my application! The agent was super helpful and walked me through submitting corrections online while on the phone with them. Now my application shows 'correction processing' instead of just 'processing'. Thanks for all the advice!
