How to add schools to already submitted FAFSA - Common App additions?

Just realized I'm not sure how to handle this FAFSA situation. My daughter submitted her FAFSA application back in December, but she's now added 4 more schools through the Common App last weekend (deadline pressure got to her!). Do we need to update her FAFSA to include these new schools? Is this something she needs to do through her studentaid.gov account, or can I do it through my parent FSA ID? The whole parent/student access thing confuses me sometimes. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any step-by-step guidance would be super helpful before we mess something up!

Yes, you definitely need to add those schools to the FAFSA! Your daughter needs to log in to her studentaid.gov account (not yours) with her FSA ID. Once logged in, she should select the 2024-2025 FAFSA form and choose the option to 'Add or Delete a School.' She can add up to 10 schools total. Just make sure she has each school's federal code handy - those can be found on each college's financial aid website or through the FAFSA search tool.

Thank you! That helps a lot. Do you happen to know if adding these new schools will delay the processing of her application for the schools we already listed? We're getting close to some priority deadlines and I'm nervous about messing things up.

we had to do this last month!! its super easy, just have ur kid log in and click the edit button. it doesnt mess anything up for the other schools that were already there, my son did it in like 5 mins

Oh that's a relief! So the original schools still got the information on time? I'm so paranoid about these financial aid deadlines.

Adding schools won't delay processing for the originally listed schools. The schools you already listed have already received the FAFSA information. When your daughter adds the new schools, only those schools will receive the new transmission. The SAI calculation remains the same regardless of which schools receive it.

Perfect, thank you for explaining! One more thing - after she adds the schools, will we get any kind of confirmation that they've been successfully added?

I went through EXACTLY this with my son last year and it was a nightmare!!! We added the schools but they never got his FAFSA info. Turns out you HAVE TO submit the entire form again after adding schools. The system is TERRIBLE and no one tells you this!!! Make sure your daughter clicks all the way through to the submission confirmation screen or the schools won't get anything!!!!

This isnt true. You dont resubmit the entire FAFSA. Youre just editing the school list. maybe you had a different issue?

NO, I'm telling you what happened to us. My son's financial aid counselor at UCF specifically told us his FAFSA wasn't received because we didn't complete the final submission step after adding schools. Maybe they fixed it this year but that's what we were told!!!

To clarify the confusion: When adding schools to an existing FAFSA, you do need to go through several confirmation screens, but you're not resubmitting the entire application. After selecting "Add or Delete a School," you'll need to: 1. Enter your student's FSA ID 2. Add the school codes for the new institutions 3. Review the changes 4. Sign the update (using the student's FSA ID) 5. Submit the changes The system will generate a confirmation page showing the new school list. Your daughter should take a screenshot of this confirmation for her records. The new schools should receive the FAFSA data within 3-5 business days.

This is super helpful, thank you! Having these steps laid out is exactly what I needed. We'll make sure to take that screenshot too.

My daughter had so much trouble trying to add schools last month. The studentaid.gov website kept timing out whenever she tried to update her FAFSA. We spent DAYS trying to get through. Anyone else have this problem?

I had the same issue last week! After getting disconnected repeatedly trying to call FSA, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a FAFSA agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent walked me through adding schools while on the phone. Way better than fighting with the website for days.

btw make sure ur kid knows which schools shes already added!!! my son forgot and ended up removing 2 schools he still wanted to apply to when he was adding the new ones lol. the fafsa only lets you have 10 total

Oh that's a good point! I'll have her double-check her current list before making any changes. Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, after submitting changes, your daughter will receive a confirmation email at the address associated with her FSA ID. Additionally, she can check her studentaid.gov dashboard, which will show all schools currently listed on her FAFSA. I recommend checking back in 2-3 days to make sure everything is showing correctly.

Great, we'll do that. Really appreciate everyone's help! This has made me much less anxious about the whole process.

Random but important question - does updating the school list affect your SAI calculation at all? My daughter's financial aid advisor told us something about FAFSA recalculating when you make any changes and I'm paranoid now.

No, adding or removing schools does not impact your Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation at all. The SAI is based solely on the financial information you provided. Schools receive the same SAI regardless of when they were added to your FAFSA. Your daughter's advisor might have been referring to making corrections to financial information, which would trigger a recalculation.

Just wanted to add one more tip from our experience - when your daughter logs into her studentaid.gov account to add schools, she should write down or screenshot the federal school codes for each new school BEFORE starting the process. The FAFSA system has a timeout feature, and if she has to stop midway to look up codes, she might get logged out and have to start over. Also, double-check that she's updating the correct year's FAFSA (2024-2025 vs 2025-2026) since the system can be confusing about which form you're working on. Good luck!

As someone who just went through this process with my oldest last month, I can confirm it's much easier than it seems! One thing I'd add is to make sure your daughter has her FSA ID password handy - I spent 20 minutes helping my son reset his because he couldn't remember it. Also, the federal school codes are usually 6 digits and can be found easily by searching the school name in the FAFSA school search tool. The whole process took us about 15 minutes once we had everything ready. Don't stress too much - the system is actually pretty user-friendly for adding schools!

This is really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! I was definitely overthinking the whole process. Having the FSA ID ready is such a good point - I'll make sure my daughter has hers written down before we start. The 15-minute timeframe sounds much more manageable than I was expecting. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who literally did this yesterday! My son needed to add 3 schools after getting into a few more through regular decision. The process was super straightforward - logged into his studentaid.gov account, clicked "Make FAFSA Corrections," then selected "Add or Delete Schools." The key thing is to make sure you have those 6-digit federal school codes ready beforehand (you can search for them right on the FAFSA site). Took maybe 10 minutes total, and we got the confirmation email within an hour. The schools he originally listed were completely unaffected. Don't overthink it - the system walks you through each step pretty clearly!
