Do colleges need to be on Common App if daughter already applied directly to schools? FAFSA confusion

I'm seriously confused about the application process this year. My daughter has already applied directly through 3 university websites and got accepted to 2 of them (yay!). But now she's creating her Common App account to apply to 4 more schools, and I'm not sure if we need to add those first 3 schools to her Common App too? She already paid application fees directly to those schools. And then there's the FAFSA - I know we need to list ALL colleges she's applying to on the FAFSA for financial aid. But does that mean we need to add the 3 direct-application schools to her Common App too? Or can the Common App just have the new schools she hasn't applied to yet? I don't want to mess anything up or have her pay double application fees! Any advice from parents who've been through this would be super helpful!

The Common App and FAFSA are two completely separate systems. For FAFSA, yes, you need to list ALL schools she's interested in receiving financial aid from, regardless of how she applied. For Common App, you only need to include schools she's applying to THROUGH the Common App. No need to add schools where she's already applied directly - that would just create confusion and potentially duplicate applications.

Thank you so much for clarifying! That makes perfect sense. So for the FAFSA, we include all 7 schools, but for Common App, just the 4 new ones she hasn't applied to yet. That's a relief!

my son did this last year and we just put the new schools on common app. the old ones already had his info why would they need it twice? but YES put all schools on fafsa or else they cant see your financial info and wont give you any $$$

This is correct, but I want to add a clarification about FAFSA. When you initially submit your FAFSA, you can list up to 10 schools. If your daughter is considering more than 10 schools, you'll need to wait until your FAFSA is processed, then remove some schools and add others. Your SAI (Student Aid Index) will be sent to all schools listed on your FAFSA, which is what they use to create financial aid packages.

Actually this is kinda confusing because some colleges REQUIRE you to use Common App even if you've already applied directly!! Check each school's website. My daughter applied directly to her top choice then we found out they wanted Common App too and almost missed a financial aid deadline!!! The financial aid office wouldn't process anything until the Common App was done too. Such a nightmare!!

That's unusual but could happen with certain schools. OP should definitely check the specific requirements for those 3 schools where direct applications were submitted. Most schools don't require both, but policies vary widely.

Oh no! I didn't even think to check if the schools required both. I'll have my daughter check each school's website tonight just to be safe. This whole process is so unnecessarily complicated.

Don't forget that on the FAFSA, the order of schools matters! The first school you list will receive your information first. Some people recommend listing your top choice school first, but I've heard others say to list state schools first since some states have earlier priority deadlines. Just something else to consider when listing all those schools.

school order on FAFSA doesn't matter anymore!! they changed it in 2023, now all schools get info at same time. i stressed about this too lol

You're right! I forgot they changed that rule. Thanks for the correction - that's one less thing for OP to worry about.

One important note: Make sure your daughter's FAFSA is submitted as soon as possible. Many schools distribute financial aid on a first-come, first-served basis, especially for scholarships and grants. Even if she's already been accepted to those schools, they won't prepare a financial aid package until they receive her FAFSA information. And if you're having trouble getting through to the Federal Student Aid helpline to ask questions (which is very common), I recommend using Claimyr.com - it helped me get through to an actual person in minutes instead of hours of hold time. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

Yes, we've been working on the FAFSA but got stuck on a few questions about my husband's business income. Thanks for the suggestion about Claimyr - I've been on hold with FSA for literally 2+ hours twice this week and gave up both times. Will definitely check that out!

Just to add more confusion lol... some schools also use the CSS Profile for financial aid in ADDITION to FAFSA. Does anyone know if your accepted schools require CSS Profile too? That's a whole other application through College Board that some private schools require. More fees more paperwork more headaches ugh

Good point! About 200 schools (mostly private colleges) require the CSS Profile in addition to FAFSA. It's more detailed than FAFSA and does cost money to submit, though fee waivers are available. OP should check each school's financial aid page to see if CSS is required, especially for those private institutions.

My twins graduated last year and honestly I'm STILL confused about how all this works lmao. But congrats on your daughter's acceptances!!! That's awesome! 🎉

Update: I called the admissions offices for the 3 schools she already applied to directly. Two of them said NOT to submit Common App since she's already accepted, but the third one actually wants her to submit through Common App too! They said it's for "record keeping purposes" which seems silly, but I guess we'll do it. Thank you everyone for the advice - this forum has been more helpful than the high school counselor!

this is why the college application process is BROKEN. every school does different things and expects parents to figure it all out!!
