FAFSA processed with new SAI - how to get it to a different school than originally listed?

Just got the notification that our FAFSA application is FINALLY processed! We have our new SAI number (thank goodness), but now I'm confused about next steps. My daughter ended up choosing a completely different school than the ones we listed during the application process back in January. Do I just need to send them her SAI number? Is there a way to add this new school to her FAFSA now? The whole process has changed so much since my older son applied 4 years ago, and I'm feeling lost. Any advice from parents who've dealt with adding schools after processing would be super helpful!

Congrats on getting your SAI! You definitely need to add the school to her FAFSA. Just logging into studentaid.gov and going to the FAFSA form, there should be an option to 'make corrections' where you can add her new school code. The school will automatically receive her information within a few business days after you add them. They need more than just the SAI number - they need the full FAFSA report to create her financial aid package.

Thank you! Will she need to create her own account to do this or can I do it through my parent account? I'm the one who filled everything out originally.

That's not accurate - schools need to be officially added to the FAFSA through the correction process. They can't just "pull up" your information with only an SAI number. The federal system doesn't work that way. Please don't spread misinformation that could delay someone's financial aid.

You need to update your FAFSA through the correction process. Here's exactly what to do: 1. Log into studentaid.gov using the FSA ID of whoever created the FAFSA (student or parent) 2. Select the 2025-2026 FAFSA form 3. Click on "Make FAFSA Corrections" 4. Navigate to the "School Selection" section 5. Add the new school's code (you can search by name if you don't know it) 6. Submit the corrected form with your FSA ID password The school should receive your daughter's information within 3-5 business days. I recommend also contacting their financial aid office to let them know you've added them, especially if there are any approaching deadlines for institutional aid.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! One more question - will this affect her SAI score at all or just add another school to receive her information?

Adding a school won't change your SAI at all - that number stays the same regardless of which schools receive your FAFSA information. The only things that would change your SAI would be corrections to income, assets, household size, etc.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to know. I was worried we'd have to go through processing all over again!

when we tried to add a school it kept giving us errors for like a week straight. the whole fafsa system is BROKEN this year. i spent HOURS trying to get through to someone at FSA and kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. so frustrating!!!

I had the same experience trying to get through to FSA about a verification issue. After getting disconnected four times, I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent without the wait. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call when an agent is ready. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video demo of how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Definitely worth it for FAFSA issues when time is critical for financial aid.

Just to add some clarity since there's conflicting info in this thread: 1. You MUST add the school to your FAFSA through the correction process on studentaid.gov 2. Simply telling a school your SAI is insufficient - they need to receive your full ISIR (Institutional Student Information Record) through the federal system 3. Adding a school does NOT change your SAI or require reprocessing 4. Processing times for corrections are usually faster than initial applications (typically 3-5 days) 5. After adding the school, it's good practice to contact their financial aid office to confirm receipt Also, if your daughter is the one who created the FAFSA initially (with her FSA ID), then she needs to make the correction. If you created it with your parent FSA ID, then you make the correction.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I created it with my parent FSA ID, so I'll make the correction. We'll definitely follow up with the financial aid office after making the change.

does the new college need the CSS Profile too? some schools want both fafsa AND css right??

Great question. Some private colleges and universities require the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA. The CSS Profile is administered by the College Board, not the federal government. You should check the financial aid website of your daughter's new school to see if they require it. Unlike the FAFSA, the CSS Profile isn't free - it costs $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional school.

Just wanted to update - I successfully added my daughter's new school through the correction process! It was actually easier than I expected. Her SAI stayed the same (as you all mentioned), and I called the financial aid office to confirm they received everything. They're now working on her aid package. Thank you all for your help!

That's great news! Glad it worked out smoothly. Just a reminder - if your financial circumstances have changed significantly since you filed (job loss, medical expenses, etc.), you can contact the financial aid office about a professional judgment review. They can adjust her aid based on current circumstances rather than just the tax info from last year.

So glad to hear everything worked out for you! This thread is really helpful - I'm bookmarking it because I have a feeling we might run into similar issues next year when my youngest applies. The step-by-step instructions from Connor were particularly useful. It's reassuring to know that adding schools after processing isn't as complicated as it seemed initially. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and cleared up the misinformation!
