FAFSA website login issues - need alternatives to complete our application
I'm at my wit's end trying to access the studentaid.gov site to complete our FAFSA application. We started the forms about two weeks ago, got halfway through inputting all our tax information, and now we can't log back in to finish it. The site either times out or gives us a 'high volume' message. We've tried different browsers, computers, even my phone. My daughter's college priority deadline is in 3 weeks and I'm getting seriously worried. Has anyone else had these login problems? Is there another way to access and complete our application besides the website? I don't want her to miss out on financial aid because of technical issues!

•Exactly! It's maddening. Have you found any workarounds? I'm wondering if there's a paper form option or something.

The system has been experiencing higher than normal traffic since the 2025-2026 FAFSA simplification changes were implemented. I've found a few workarounds that might help: 1. Try logging in during off-peak hours (early morning 4-7am or late night after 11pm) 2. Clear your browser cache completely before attempting login 3. Make sure you're using the most updated version of the FSA ID system 4. Try the mobile app instead of the website - sometimes it works when the site doesn't And remember that if you've started your application, your information should be saved in the system even if you can't access it right now.

•Thank you for these suggestions! I'll definitely try the off-peak hours approach tonight. Do you know if the mobile app has all the same functionality as the website? We need to upload some additional tax documents for the verification process.

I successfully got through the entire application last week after having similar issues. Here's what worked for me: • Use Microsoft Edge browser (for some reason it handled the site better than Chrome) • Login VERY early in the morning (I did 5am EST and had no issues) • Have ALL your documents ready so you can complete everything in one session • If you get logged out, wait at least 30 minutes before trying again Also important: if your daughter's school deadline is approaching, contact their financial aid office directly. Many schools have extended their priority deadlines due to the widespread FAFSA technical issues this year. They might also have campus-specific workarounds.

•Thank you! I'll try Edge browser tonight. Smart idea about contacting the financial aid office directly - I hadn't thought of that. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

try calling the federal student aid number at off times too...like right when they open or an hour before they close. I finally got through after 6 attempts. they were actually helpful and manually verified some of my info.

•I tried calling twice but got disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes each time. What number did you call? Maybe I'm using the wrong one.

I was struggling with the same login issues for weeks and wasting hours on hold. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach an actual FSA agent without the insane wait. They got me through to someone in about 10 minutes who helped me access my application and even walked me through completing the remaining sections. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me they're experiencing unprecedented volume this year because of the FAFSA simplification changes and system updates. Apparently a lot of people are having the same technical issues.

•Yes, it worked for me! The agent I spoke with was able to verify my identity and help me access my saved application data even though I couldn't log in through the website.

When I had this issue, I went directly to my son's college financial aid office. They have dedicated terminals that connect to the FAFSA system and staff who can help troubleshoot. Many schools offer this service - worth checking if your daughter's school does too. They helped us finish the whole application in about an hour.

To answer your earlier question about the mobile app - it does have most functionality but the document upload feature is limited. You can add W-2 information manually, but for more complex verification documents, you'll still need the website. One other critical thing to know: if you're close to a deadline, a partial submission is better than none. Even if you can't complete every section, submit what you have. You can always make corrections later using the correction process, but this at least gets you in the system by the priority deadline.

•That's really helpful to know about the partial submission option! I had no idea we could do that. We'll definitely try to submit what we have if we can't complete everything by the deadline.

heres the number i used: 1-800-433-3243. but seriously it's pure luck getting through. my daughter just used her school's financial aid office computer lab and that worked way better

UPDATE: Success! I took several of your suggestions and finally got through. I used Edge browser at 5:30am this morning and was able to log in with no issues. Everything we had entered previously was still there. Then I called my daughter's school financial aid office and they confirmed they've extended their priority deadline by 2 weeks because of all the FAFSA technical problems. For anyone else struggling with this - try the early morning hours with Edge browser, and definitely contact your school's financial aid office directly! Thank you all for your help!

•Great news! Glad to hear you got it working. The SAI calculation should be processed within 3-5 days now that you've submitted everything.
