FAFSA transfer mid-year - too late to apply to different college for fall 2024?

My son just dropped a bombshell last night saying he wants to transfer from our local community college to a 4-year school for his sophomore year. We've already submitted his FAFSA for 2024-2025 listing only the community college, but haven't received or signed the financial aid package yet (expecting it mid-June). Is it too late for him to apply to different colleges for Fall 2024? How does the FAFSA work if he gets accepted somewhere else? Would we need to completely redo everything or just update his school list? Really confused about timeframes and if this is even possible at this point!

It's probably late for many schools, but not necessarily too late for all! Many schools have rolling admissions or late deadlines. Here's what you need to know about the FAFSA aspect: 1. You don't need to redo the entire FAFSA. You just need to log into studentaid.gov and add the new school codes to your existing application 2. Each school that receives your FAFSA info will create their own aid package 3. Different schools have different priority deadlines for financial aid, so your son might not get the best aid package applying this late I'd suggest having your son immediately research schools still accepting applications for Fall 2024, contact their admissions offices directly, and ask about both admission and financial aid deadlines. Good luck!

Thank you so much for that info! I didn't realize we could just add more school codes without redoing everything. I think we'll need to move very quickly then. Do you know if scholarships are typically still available this late or are those all gone by now?

my daughter transfered last year, lot of schools still taking applicatoins for fall trust me. dont worry about fasfa just yet, first see if he can even get in somewhere!! most schools have until like august 1 to send in transcripts. tell him to start applying NOW tho, like today!!!

Thank you! That's encouraging to hear! He was looking at State University and Central College. I'll tell him to start the applications today and worry about the rest later.

Actually, you do need to be concerned about both applications AND FAFSA deadlines simultaneously. While some schools are still accepting applications, many have already allocated most of their institutional aid. I strongly recommend: 1. Have your son call the financial aid offices at his target schools TOMORROW to ask about deadlines for transfer students and available aid 2. Update your FAFSA immediately by adding all potential school codes (you can list up to 10 schools) 3. Check if additional forms are required - some schools need the CSS Profile which has earlier deadlines 4. Request official transcripts ASAP as processing can take 1-2 weeks As a transfer student, his options might be more limited but definitely not impossible if you move quickly.

This!! My son transfered last year and we nearly missed out on getting any institutional aid because we didnt know about the internal school deadlines. The FASFA was fine but the schools own scholarship deadlines had passed.

At my sons college they have a special transfer application for fall that's open until July 1st with special transfer scholarships too. Might be worth calling financial aid offices directly at the schools he's interested in. Also the advisors at his current community college might know which schools still have openings.

That's a good point about checking with his current advisor! I didn't think of that. We have a meeting with her next week about fall registration so I'll make sure to bring this up.

Is anyone else completely SICK of how the FAFSA makes everything so complicated?? My daughter transferred schools mid-year and it was an absolute NIGHTMARE trying to get her aid package transferred. We ended up losing out on a $3,500 grant because of some arbitrary deadline no one told us about! And don't even get me started on how the phone lines are ALWAYS busy when you try to call Federal Student Aid with questions. I spent HOURS trying to get through!

I had the exact same experience trying to call FSA last month when my son's SAI score seemed completely wrong. After wasting almost 2 days trying to get through, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an agent quickly. They have this service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ But you're right, the whole system is way too complicated, especially for transfers.

Thanks for the tip about Claimyr! Definitely going to check that out next time I need to call. Last time I tried to get through it was literally a 3+ hour wait!

One thing to remember - your son's community college might have transfer agreements with specific 4-year schools that make the process easier. My daughter did this and got guaranteed admission plus they honored all her credits! Worth asking about.

waitt does ur son actually know which schools he wants to apply to?? or is this just a random idea he had lol. my brother decided he wanted to transfer but then changed his mind like 3 times so maybe wait and see if he's serious before doing all this work??

LOL that's a fair question! He mentioned State University and Central College specifically. He's been talking to his roommate who's transferring there. I do want to make sure it's not just a passing idea though, so we're sitting down this weekend to discuss it seriously.

One more thing to consider - even if your son gets accepted as a transfer student for fall, he might want to compare financial aid packages between his current school and potential new schools. Since you've already completed FAFSA, you'll be able to compare offers. Just make sure when adding the new school codes that you select to have your FAFSA information sent to them - it doesn't happen automatically just by adding them. Also, if he's considering State University, their transfer application deadline for fall was actually extended to June 15th this year (they normally close earlier). I know because my nephew just applied there as a transfer.

That's incredibly helpful information about State's deadline! That's his first choice. I'll make sure we have everything ready well before June 15th. And good point about comparing the aid packages - we definitely need to see if it's financially viable.

There's one critical point no one has mentioned yet. When you log into studentaid.gov to add more schools to your son's FAFSA, make sure you're updating the correct aid year (2024-2025). I've seen many parents accidentally modify the wrong year when making changes. Also, since your son will be transferring as a sophomore, make sure he understands how credit transfers work. Not all credits transfer equally between institutions, and this could potentially extend his time to graduation which has significant financial implications.
