FAFSA tax sharing bug - parent contribution stuck processing since March

I'm beyond frustrated with the 2025-2026 FAFSA right now. My son is starting his freshman year in August and we submitted everything back in January, but the application has been stuck in limbo since March 14th. The system shows our application was processed but there's this weird glitch where the parent tax sharing section isn't confirming properly. Every time I try to accept the invitation to share our tax information, the site either freezes or gives an error message. It's been OVER THREE MONTHS of trying almost daily! Has anyone else experienced this tax sharing bug? My son's university needs his financial aid package finalized by June 15th or he might lose his housing assignment. The school financial aid office says they can't do anything until FAFSA completes processing. I've called the Federal Student Aid number at least 15 times but never get through to a human being. Is there any way to fix this without waiting for the entire system to be repaired?

Same problem here! The parent contribution section has been buggy for like everyone I know. My daughter's application has been stuck since February because of the tax sharing glitch. The invitation shows up in my account but when I click accept it just loads forever then times out. So frustrating!

How are you handling the university deadlines? My son's school is threatening to cancel his housing if we don't get this resolved soon. Did you find any workarounds?

This is unfortunately a widespread issue with the FAFSA redesign. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool integration is experiencing intermittent failures in the parent contribution section. Three things that have worked for some families: 1. Try accessing the site between 2-5am ET when server load is lowest 2. Use a different browser (Firefox seems to work better than Chrome for the tax sharing function) 3. Clear your cache completely, then try logging in from an incognito/private window If none of those work, request that your school issue a provisional financial aid package based on your previous year's information while you continue working with FSA to resolve the technical issues.

Thank you for these suggestions! I've tried different browsers but not the early morning hours - will definitely try that tonight. The school financial aid office just keeps telling us to wait for FAFSA to fix things. I'll specifically ask about a provisional package based on these technical issues.

I've only tried on my desktop and laptop. Hadn't thought about using my phone! Will definitely try that tonight, thanks!

I work in a university financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue with about 30% of our incoming freshman applications. The tax sharing function has been problematic since the FAFSA redesign launched. Here's what I recommend: 1. Your son should immediately contact his school's financial aid office and request a "FAFSA Technical Delay Form" - most schools have created one due to these widespread issues 2. The school can issue a provisional aid package based on estimated figures to hold his housing spot 3. Document every attempt to resolve the issue (screenshots of errors, dates of calls to FSA) 4. Continue attempting the tax sharing process weekly, as the system is being patched regularly The Department of Education has acknowledged these issues and instructed schools to use professional judgment for students caught in technical limbo.

Wait there's a special form for this?? No one at my daughter's school mentioned anything about a "Technical Delay Form"! I'm calling them first thing tomorrow. Thanks for this info!

This is incredibly helpful - thank you! I had no idea about the Technical Delay Form option. I'll have my son contact the financial aid office tomorrow morning. Do you know if most schools are being understanding about these technical issues?

THE ENTIRE FAFSA SYSTEM IS BROKEN AND THEY DON'T CARE!!! My twins are both starting college this fall and we've been trying since JANUARY to get this stupid tax sharing thing to work. Called FSA over 20 times and either get disconnected or told "we're working on it" - WORKING ON IT FOR 5 MONTHS?? How is this acceptable?? Meanwhile my kids might lose scholarships because these incompetent government systems can't handle basic technology. This redesign has been a complete disaster and no one is being held accountable!

Seriously! My niece is in the same boat. The whole system needs to be scrapped and rebuilt from scratch. They had YEARS to prepare for this redesign and they still completely botched it.

The lack of accountability is what gets me too. If this was a private company they'd be out of business with this level of failure. I understand it's a complex system but how was it launched with such fundamental problems?

After dealing with this exact tax sharing issue for weeks, I finally got through to an actual FSA agent who helped resolve it on the spot. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with a real person instead of waiting on hold forever. They have this service that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to manually verify my tax information and override the system error. Our application was fully processed 48 hours later. Might be worth trying since you're up against that June 15th deadline!

I've never heard of this service before! Did they actually fix the tax sharing issue? I'm desperate at this point and would try anything to get this resolved before my son loses his housing.

Yes! The FSA agent was able to see the technical error on their end and manually verify our tax info. She said they've been dealing with this specific bug since February. Once I got a real person on the phone, it was fixed in about 15 minutes. The website still showed the error but the agent confirmed our application was complete on their end.

my cousin had this happen and his school just used his SAI from last year as an estimate until the system got fixed. maybe ask if they can do that for your son?

That's a good suggestion, but this is my son's first year in college so we don't have a previous SAI to use as reference. I wish there was a way to just submit our tax returns directly to the school to bypass this broken system!

Update: I tried the early morning thing that someone suggested (logged in at 3:30am) and the tax sharing actually worked!!! My husband's contribution finally went through. Maybe the servers really are less busy then?

Quick update based on information released yesterday: The Department of Education has acknowledged this specific tax sharing bug and announced they'll be implementing a fix by June 5th. In the meantime, they've instructed all schools to use alternative documentation (like uploaded tax returns) for affected students. Have your son email his financial aid office specifically referencing the "Parent Contributor Tax Retrieval Error #FSA-2526" and request accommodation under the new guidance.

Thank you so much for this update! I hadn't seen anything about the official error code or June 5th fix. This gives me hope we might get this resolved before his housing deadline. I'll have him email the financial aid office with this specific reference code right away.

Has anyone figured out if this affects your SAI calculation? My daughter's finally went through after weeks of the tax glitch but her SAI seems way higher than expected based on our income...

The tax sharing bug shouldn't affect your SAI calculation once it's properly processed. However, there have been reports that the new FAFSA formula is calculating higher SAIs for many families compared to the old EFC system. If your SAI seems significantly off, you should request a professional judgment review from your daughter's financial aid office.
